I’ve just watched it all. I’m a sobbing wreck now.

Anyone else watched?

that teacher was just awful, i so wanted her to react

NinaDefoe · 20/01/2022 21:28

@Pikaso

Lisa did my head in too - especially with the constant “oh you cuuuunt!!!”

Do people really talk like that to each other? I’m not a prude but the overuse of cunt did my head in

I don’t know anyone who uses the ‘c’ word. Lots of sweary friends but never say that.
Pikaso · 20/01/2022 23:11

Out of curiosity @NinaDefoe do you live in the north of the south? (If you’re in the UK). Just that I’ve been told the c-word is seen as less offensive down south. I’m up north and hate the word

PersonCareHotline · 21/01/2022 00:12

Cunt isn’t a huge deal in Scotland.

JacquelineCarlyle · 21/01/2022 00:28

I loved it. Agree that it wasn't as good as series 1 and 2, especially the first few episodes but it was fantastic at the end. I'm another who really missed Roxy, as love her but hated Brian. He's just so gross.

Loved it all!

Ulysses · 21/01/2022 08:07

Re the C word in Scotland that's a bit of a sweeping generalisation. It is really not a word used among my friends and family. I remember a guy who used it in one of the offices on a regular basis though and thought it was really off and it made me want to avoid him. I know it's only a word but there's something really vicious about it.

It made me wince on the show but did make smile when Kath used it to describe her date.

JacquelineCarlyle · 21/01/2022 10:21

I feel exactly the same @Ulysses

PersonCareHotline · 21/01/2022 12:15

Funny that. I lived in the North of England for five years and the only time I heard the word cunt was when a Scottish girl said to me.

“Cunt is just a synonym for person in Scotland, like ‘see that cunt over a here’ or ‘some cunt came along’. But you never hear it here.”

Whereas it’s really not unusual to hear it in Scotland. It’s true, an adjective or a tone can give it an edge again, but often it’s not said with malice.

“Fucking” has lost shock value too, some places use “hooring” instead now for increased emphasis.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 21/01/2022 15:42

@Bravenheart

SPOILER: Did he commit suicide at the end? Was that what it was hinting at?
I took the ending to mean that after Lisa had gone he never remarried, bu shared his life with Brandy the dog, and shown she went he never got another dog, but just lived alone, not trying to replace either of them, until his own time came.

I wept buckets, I must admit.

The language is saltier than I normally tolerate - which is a testament to the quality of the show in my eyes that I was prepared to put up with it. It captures the pain and distress of grief and loss and loneliness so wonderfully - I didn't re-watch the first two seasons, but probably will.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/01/2022 19:35

Just finished it, loved it, all of it. Just brilliant- especially Penelope Wilton Smile

North. Maybe you’re right. Plenty of swear words are used but never C**t. I hate the word too!
NinaDefoe · 21/01/2022 22:27

Just to add, I’d say it’s regarded as one of the worst things to say to someone here (which is why I guess I only hear it said on programmes like A-L) Interesting that it isn’t a big deal in some parts of the country!

DressingPafe · 21/01/2022 22:42

Brian was exactly the same character as he was in Derek, so I found him annoying for that reason too. Along with all the pointless sex talk. What did it add? Nothing. It just seemed really lazy. Then all the swearing, again for what purpose?

Watching S3 I just felt like Tony was a dick most of the time. Oh and I’m pretty certain his dad didn’t expect for his ashes to be scattered at the pub table! What was wrong with the pub garden? And he was such an asshole to the landlord but who wouldn’t be annoyed at what he did? You don’t do that.

I generally like Ricky Gervais but I didn’t like this series. I didn’t cry at the end because by then I just didn’t care any more.

teezletangler · 22/01/2022 07:36

Thank god it's over because I don't think I could bear one more video of Lisa and her laughter. I thought the videos were quite a sweet technique in the first episodes of the show but quickly found it cringey. Surely no one films their partner like this? Young children yes, because they're adorable and you want to capture the memories, but random conversations between adults?

This series just lost its way, sadly. Maudlin, overly sentimental, unnecessarily and uncomfortably crude, story just going round and round same as before. I did like the ending and the lovely last scene, and Diane Morgan was excellent. Thought Kath's date with the teacher was the funniest bit of the series!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/01/2022 07:42

Elbows!!

I thought the teacher scene with Cath was quite upsetting

'Watching S3 I just felt like Tony was a dick most of the time. Oh and I’m pretty certain his dad didn’t expect for his ashes to be scattered at the pub table! What was wrong with the pub garden? '

God yes what was the ashes indoors all about and I 'hope it was his cock' Confused.

I wish it had ended with a bit of self awareness and revelation for Tony that no, he wasn't a grief stricken victim he was just a massive bellend using his wife's death to enable his behaviour.

teezletangler · 22/01/2022 08:15

I thought the teacher scene with Cath was quite upsetting

I think quite a lot of people did react that way. I thought it was funny because he was so completely ridiculous and you were laughing at him.

Pikaso · 22/01/2022 08:19

But Cath was so upset, she was desperately lonely and I got the feeling she was thinking “is this the best I’m going to get?”

I’ve been there. I can laugh about my bad dates now (now that I’m happily married!) but at the time a date like that would have seen me sink into weeks of depression

Ashleys63 · 22/01/2022 08:44

disappointed overall with S3,
Agree the videos of Lisa got a bit ridiculous and cringe.
Too much unnecessary swearing and sex talk.
Just felt it hadn't moved on at all.
i liked the new member of staff though (Collen? ) and Kate Robbins as the author / card reader was funny.
But the best bit for me was Ken and his 'taxi driver the musical' scene, hilarious.

The ending with all the characters pairing up was a bit silly and reminded me of the last scene in Grease,

MrsLargeEmbodied · 22/01/2022 08:51

one of the videos lisa was rightly annoyed, the horn being blasted at her

Kendrickspenguin · 22/01/2022 09:02

I thought the fortune telling author was trying to be Julie Walters. I love Afterlife. I really like Kerry Godliman as Lisa. I find them believable as a couple. Two basically lovely people who made each other's lives happy.

lollipoprainbow · 22/01/2022 09:40

@Kendrickspenguin yes I thought Julie Walters as well.

TinaYouFatLard · 22/01/2022 11:32

Agree with all the other disappointed posters. This series lost any trace of subtlety and clever humour.

Also, it’s a minor point but I wish they’d either ignored covid completely or explored it a bit more. Considering the subject I thought they’d make some reference to people being alone in care homes at the end and the extra grief this brought.

Loved Kath describing the teacher.
