I’ve just watched it all. I’m a sobbing wreck now.

Anyone else watched?

Which book would you recommend the most?

KillingMeDeftly · 16/01/2022 18:45

@SNUG2022 I still think her first, Getting Rid of Matthew is her best but her recent, Worst Idea Ever, was fun too. It would've made for a good AIBU!

Summersdreaming · 16/01/2022 18:59

Mmm I flicked over to something else after 2/3 episodes, the way he treats the nurse is awful, swanning in and out of the care home was ridiculous, and the rest of the characters are terrible. Wtf was the scene with the lad in the bath and his mum?

sofakingcool · 16/01/2022 21:52

@Bravenheart

SPOILER: Did he commit suicide at the end? Was that what it was hinting at?
I think it was left to the viewers to decide Sad

James looks and sounds exactly like James Cordon !

James looks and sounds exactly like James Cordon !
If I remember rightly from discussion threads on the previous 2 series that was intentional. RG and JC apparently had a feud going on.

I was dissatisfied with this season. Unlike others I'm happy with the word cunt. I'm okay with the misogyny- at least the inclusion of them culminated in them laughing alone and the town, therefore society, excluding them . I think that's the intent (although the lack of the lead misogynist , the therapist is notable)

What I dislike is the lack of roxy the sex worker. Not just lack but demonisation of. Suddenly pat is jealous and constantly refers to her work only, as though that is what she is. Offers her an ultimatum and loses her- and this is portrayed as positive?! He finds a proper woman. And roxy gone- As though she was no more than her work? We saw and knew her. Her character was far more and pats role in accepting her and she him was beautiful. Then to throw it all away? In such a crass way? It also felt that tony was cleaning his life- she represented a link to the homeless druggie, the less sanitised friends that he'd come to know on his dark times. As though he'd risen above the riff raff and they aren't to be associated with him any more. If the actress wasn't available there were very many more ways to get rid than this.

Finally and for me the worst of it- was the tying up of strings. Every character neatly paired up- whether they should be or not. Some characters clearly introduced for no more than just their pairing at the end (the intern that states her hope is a man "with a face" ) a weird Disney- fied ending that didn't sell true.

I liked the ambiguity of Tony's end though.

IWantMoreStationery · 16/01/2022 22:40

I really liked it and cried so much at the end. I saw RG in stand up just before Christmas and he was brilliant. I loved The Office & Derek & Extra's. I'm a fan. Did miss sex worker but liked how it ended for postman Pat.

IWantMoreStationery · 16/01/2022 22:46

I really loved Roxy but to be fair if Pat did like her he would have preferred her not be having sex with other men and would have found it difficult when he had feelings for her.

lollipoprainbow · 16/01/2022 22:55

Blubbering wreck at the end scene. Just beautiful.

I really loved Roxy but to be fair if Pat did like her he would have preferred her not be having sex with other men and would have found it difficult when he had feelings for her.

But when they got together tony questioned why Pat liked her, what with her profession- and pat loved it? He was proud not prudish? His acceptance of her job was a big part of the whole get together. With roxy feeling he wouldn't want her and him feeling inadequate for her?

I'd agree otherwise- in real life it would be impossible but such was the idealistic and beautiful take that series 1/2 gave us? Acceptance.

Sort0f · 16/01/2022 23:44

I wondered if the reason Roxy disappeared was to symbol the fact that his desire for sex as part of his social relationships had gone. Just like the junkies dying symbolised him being over a need for drugs (but obviously not alcohol).

And that Brian being so repulsive and explicit was a indication that it’s a mistake to base relationships primarily on sexual needs.

I did like the end scene. I’d thought earlier in the season, when he was out walking the dog after the nurse had found a new partner “uh-oh, he’ll be in trouble when the dog goes”.

So I liked how when he walked off it was just him at the dog. Lisa joined him for a while and disappeared. Then you saw the tree turn to it’s autumnal coat to indicate him entering a new season in his life and then passage of time. Then the dog disappeared and he walked in on his own for a while, seeing memories of Lisa and dog in his habitual routes.

So to me it symbolises him just living out the rest of his life, first with the dog, then in his own. In a place he is familiar with and that holds a lot of memories, with friends and colleagues round him.

And how his continuing love for Lisa inspires those people round him to give love a chance, because how he is shows that live can endure. So his legacy and purpose is not just giving away the money, but also showing people that love die last and can be eternal.

I used to work with someone who worked with him at ULU before he was famous. She said it was impossible to get anything done because he was so funny. David Brent is based on in part someone who used to work at ULU.

sociallydistained · 16/01/2022 23:53

That dog has me crying just by being there. The love Tony has for his wife is just ❤️

I totally thought that and so did my parents, the insinuation of the dog no longer being there and then him, something unspoken happened. Having a personal connection to suicide and worked with mental health typically the individual presents themselves at their most happiest and best state of mind before the act in order to calm and deter family and friends from worrying. He also made the comment about 'going round and round til it's your turn to get off and someone else's turn to get on and be happy' He said that after visiting those children. And by giving it all away and giving his friends one last good day he was giving them a positive final image.
Ghislainedefeligonde · 17/01/2022 00:05

I’m generally a bit disappointed in series 3, I just couldn’t stand anything about Brian, so over the top and disgusting.
I liked the development in terms of friendships with Lenny and the last episode was really great but I just wish there had been less of Brian being so repulsive

thickthighs73 · 17/01/2022 00:15

Loved it as much as S1 & S2 laughed and cried lots

CthulhuInDisguise · 17/01/2022 00:20

I watched it in one go on Friday night and was an emotional wreck, even voice messaging my recent ex whilst sobbing to tell him to watch it if he wanted to understand what it's like being widowed and dating a widow, because I'm hugely messed up and he was my first (and probably last) foray into dating after losing DH. Not my finest hour. But it's unbelievable that RG wrote that with no experience of being widowed. It's unbelievably accurate to how I feel most of the time and how others relate to me.

idiotmagnet · 17/01/2022 00:23

Thought it was a bit disappointing for the same reasons as have already been mentioned. And thought the ending was massively over done.

Fere · 17/01/2022 00:26

Looks like I am in minority.
I watched first episode and couldn't be bothered to carry on. Slow and repetitive.
I enjoyed the first series most but it feels to me that he didn't have much to say any more and just painfully streached some ideas. I won't be coming back to it.

ashorterday · 17/01/2022 06:14

P.s I thought it must be a different dog. It's definitely the same dog as I follow it's account on Instagram.

I've watched two episodes and been disappointed so far. It was all just the same stuff rehashed with him throwing in random exclamations of "CUNT!" at people. Maybe it gets better.

FuggyPidding · 17/01/2022 07:47

I liked series 1 & 2 but didn't think series 3 was as good.
Like others have said, Brian was just too much... and some of the scenes (e.g.. the bath one) were too much and unnecessary.
All the pairings at the end too were unrealistic. Why the Hollywood end?
I missed Roxy too.

It seemed over reliant on the video memories too. Would a couple really have that many videos of each other?? Especially ones which were made before she became ill?
Maybe it's just me but I don't think there are many (any!) videos of me and my other half... maybe there should be?!

Saying that, I pretty much binge watched the whole thing and it did make me laugh and (almost) cry in parts (I don't often cry at TV!).

KillingMeDeftly · 17/01/2022 09:05

I was wondering the same @FuggyPidding, I don't know anyone who constantly films their partner around the house and tbh if mine did that I'd be throwing the phone at him!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 17/01/2022 09:07

i couldnt sleep last night and was tempted to come down and watch some more of this.

Claymorekick · 17/01/2022 12:46

So finished watching this today and then read this thread. It is interesting that they are adamant that the ending wasn't Tony committing suicide as it seems as if quite a lot of people - me included - have interpreted that way. It definitely seemed to me that was what was being intimated and, whilst it was desperately sad, I did feel it was a good ending as he just wanted to be with Lisa and that was the only way.

However, I was disappointed overall with the series - Brian was too much, too vulgar, too inappropriate (and I am not a prude Confused). Just totally unnecessarily crude.

Also, it made me very uncomfortable how cruel Tony was to his brother in law most of the time.

If I wasn't so invested in the ending, I think I woild have given up by episode 2 Hmm

lollipoprainbow · 17/01/2022 12:54

@Claymorekick I agree that it was suicide at the end subtly hinted at. He was vile to his brother In law considering he's related to his beloved wife! The bit in the hospital where he was calling him puny and girly and talking about smear tests was very odd!! Still loved it as a whole though.
