I’ve just watched it all. I’m a sobbing wreck now.

Anyone else watched?

He wouldn't kill himself and leave the dog, the point of the show was him finding reasons to live.

Ulysses · 18/01/2022 05:53

I didn't think there was any difference to the previous couple of series so any character development made at the end of them wasn't followed through. It was very much a repeat of the other two series for the most part and if anything I found him much more unpleasant. Most of the men in the series were simply awful and the women long-suffering, including his dead wife.

The only character that I thought was written a bit better was the Diane Morgan one.

QuizzicalEyebrows · 18/01/2022 12:15

Yup also a sobbing mess. DD watched it with me and called me a wet wipe every time I sobbed which was quite a few times.

Ghislainedefeligonde · 18/01/2022 17:38

Yes I also liked the development in Kath and I found the yoga class so, so sad. I’m glad she found some company by the end of the series

Cherrypie32 · 18/01/2022 21:27

I really loved the first two series so was looking forward to three but I’m not enjoying it. I thought Tony had got to a better place and the tone was uplifting. I don’t think it would have been a cliche to see him continue that journey and make some positive progress while still struggling with his grief. There’s no warmth to this, characters or scenarios. The sex stuff and swearing is too in your face and actually a bit boring. I don’t like any of them or empathise which I did before. I still think Ricky is a incredible comedy writer but this is an example of those comedies that shouldn’t have done that last series for me.

headintheproverbial · 18/01/2022 21:33

Absolutely loved it. Watched the lot today!

Ginger1982 · 18/01/2022 22:07

I cried at the end but found the rest of it a bit 'meh.'

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 19/01/2022 01:01

I cried all through this, especially at Kath at the yoga.

I agree the first two series were better, but we lost our GSD between series 2 and 3, so was mostly sobbing for my dog, I think.

Still thought it was very good overall, but also missed Roxy on screen.

NatashaBedwouldbenice · 19/01/2022 08:09

I was also disappointed with series 3. Each series he has a redemptive arc and his character reforms. At the start of the next series he's back to being a dick and we go through the same thing again.

The writing was repetitive, too crude and misogynistic for me, boring rather than shocking or entertaining.

I thought that the dog was going to die in the last episode, so I was relieved that didn't happen.

And is it me, or do so many of the actors start to act like Ricky Gervais? Penelope Wilton and Diane Morgan were two who held their own. In fact Diane Morgan steals most scenes.

SueSaid · 19/01/2022 08:32

I can't bear Gervais doing all the telly shows at the moment lapping up the 'you got grief right' bollocks. No, he didn't. There isn't any right.

If his aim was to play a twat who put his dead wife on a pedestal and used his loss to be an entitled wanker then that was a success yes.

The Tanbury fayre I mean Jesus, I thought they were all going to break into a group singalong like in the final scene of Grease.

Pikaso · 19/01/2022 08:38

“The Tanbury fayre I mean Jesus, I thought they were all going to break into a group singalong like in the final scene of Grease”

😂 grease was definitely his inspiration there - all the pairing up of everyone was ridiculous

Pikaso · 19/01/2022 08:39

Diane Morgan was fantastic in every scene and I really liked her character. She was brilliant in The Cockfields too, the second series of that wasn’t as good without her

You really don't like him do you?

Surely though that is the point? That grief isn't linear, you can't box things off and move forward. It's often back and forth, you think you are in a good place and have acceptance, only to find yourself thrust backwards? I found it a fairly realistic (if slightly exaggerated for comedic effect) portrayal of being widowed. I haven't had much redemptive arc over the last 3 years, even if I've thought I have.

I loved her in Motherland too.

'You really don't like him do you?'

I do like him usually yes. This self indulgent series is a pile of crap though. Imo. Nice music though.

IWantMoreStationery · 19/01/2022 09:49

JaniieJones

That's fair enough, definitely a mixed reaction from people.

NatashaBedwouldbenice · 19/01/2022 09:54

Agreed, which makes the end of each series homily even more patronising in hindsight. I think one series would have been the best outcome, but I'm glad there won't be a fourth.

Englishgirl9 · 19/01/2022 10:01

I was disappointed. No therapist, no prostitute, lots of boring conversations. Cliche ending where everyone just randomly couples up and he gives away money to all these people that suddenly needed it. I had loved the first 2 seasons but this one felt off and not nearly as funny.

Apart from Cath! "BossBiL, here's a load of money for you. Lenny, here's a load of money for you. InternWoman, here's a load of money. Alright Cath?".

Yes! Poor Cath, just stood there while he doles out the cash to everyone around her!

Lisa really did my head in in the videos. The constant laughter at things that really were not one bit funny. I wish they'd showed one where he pranked her and she was pissed off at him, which is what would really happen with someone constantly pulling pranks which a camera in your face.
Tony really didn't strike me as a person who would constantly video stuff either. And funny how you never saw him video a thing during the whole three series.

Missed Roisin Conaty. Hated the Brian character, like everyone else.
Loved the new intern though.

The kids on the cancer ward was a really cheap, emotive shot I thought - felt like its only purpose was to get people to cry.

He was mean AF to the nurse - who was absolutely miserable in his company cus he was such an arse.

Pikaso · 19/01/2022 11:45

Yeah I wondered why he left Cath out! It seemed really heartless, especially when he’s known the new intern for all of 5 minutes

Pikaso · 19/01/2022 11:47

Lisa did my head in too - especially with the constant “oh you cuuuunt!!!”

Do people really talk like that to each other? I’m not a prude but the overuse of cunt did my head in

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 19/01/2022 13:50

I agree. It felt like a cliche and in quite bad taste, tbh...let's get some dying kids in there to really tug the heartstrings.

I also didn't like the random pairing off of people at the end. It's supposed to be based in a small town where you'd think lots of people know each other but apparently no one's met anyone apart from Tony, who can then introduce them and they all live happily ever after.

I enjoyed Kath's character a lot more this series, especially when she called the teacher a cunt. He actually really reminded me of a teacher I dated Grin

God yes, I noticed that about not giving Cath any money but giving cheques to everyone else right in front of her! I know she probably didn't need any but still...
