Has Jamie Dornan as a man who finds himself in Australia with amnesia trying to piece together who is trying to kill him. Has been likened to the film Memento with Guy Pearce. Looks promising.

@EsmaCannonball

I love the Coen Brothers so I'm not enjoying seeing the Coen Brothers done a bit half-arsed. They haven't managed to strike the right tone. The Coens can pull off darkness coming to a small town of decent yet zany people with aplomb, but I feel this needed to decide whether it was a thriller or an offbeat comedy-drama and settle on one. It doesn't help that the main guy and the young woman from the cafe seem rather flat characters compared with the wacky cast around them.
Yes, both main characters are a bit bland. Not sure if it's the acting or if the characters are just written that way?
WeAreTheHeroes · 03/01/2022 09:33

Well I'm really enjoying it, although it's dark and unsettling. I missed the first ten minutes so watched them before episode 2 last night Shock. The big cowboy is a pyscho. So many red flags for Helen's relationship. Her fiancé is hideously controlling.

Mydogisagentleman · 03/01/2022 09:55

@hamsterchump
I think he has a urostomy, similar to a colostomy but for fluids rather than solid waste.
Not sure what the point of showing it was

LadyEloise1 · 03/01/2022 10:25

You learn something new on Mumsnet every day. I had never heard of a urostomy bag.

The McDonagh brothers have a much lighter touch with this sort of thing though the humour and characters are definitely dark! I missed ep 2 last night as was feeling rotten and went to bed early. Can't decide whether to catch up on iplayer then continue, just continue without catching up, or jack it in. The cinematography is nice and I like Helen's character, Jamie Dornan was OK, the rest is meh.

waterlego · 03/01/2022 13:22

I’m enjoying it, but hey, I watched Death in Paradise the other day and enjoyed that so I’m obviously easily pleased 😂

Beards are wonderful, and JD wears his very well indeed.

MrsSantaClausitback · 03/01/2022 13:34

Just watched first two episodes. Can’t wait for DC to go to bed so we can binge the rest!

Hmmm… so the controlling husband has a part to play in this I think. Actually, in fact I think they’re all in on it. Whatever ‘it’ may be!

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/01/2022 14:29

@hamsterchump and @Mydogisagentleman

I thought he was weeing weird. That explains it

But why did we need to see

What is Luci hiding and why

Ethan is a dick

Yes where did they get the money for the helicopter. Assuming lots of dollars

The scorpion finding the pipe made me squirm

Obv stung the man

But why didn’t they call the police and say a man was buried

Who the hell was the man buried in the barrel

Did he die as no air due to sand

significance of signature on board. Same as note

Least Luci confessed

Elliot Stanley

I’m intrigued. Roll on e3

Piggywaspushed · 03/01/2022 15:03

Scorpion blondes?? Do you mean the giant lizard thing?

Bluesheep8 · 03/01/2022 15:13

No, a scorpion ran down the pipe Shock

Piggywaspushed · 03/01/2022 15:24

Did it??? Oh...

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/01/2022 15:30

@Piggywaspushed a lizard walked across tho would you really hear that

But a scorpion went done the tube

Landed on man who then screamed

Piggywaspushed · 03/01/2022 15:40

Blimey. How did I miss this??!

Inkanta · 03/01/2022 16:33

Quite engrossed in this but also irritated with bad acting or is it bad script writing - can't be sure. The police woman for instance has terrible lines and annoying gestures and pauses.

I thought she was really good….I think that’s part of her character. That she’s under confident and unsure, so she keeps pausing. She’s controlled at home and a rookie at work and is always pausing for fear of saying the wrong thing.
StCharlotte · 03/01/2022 17:37

The girlfriend was in Line of Duty in case anybody else was wondering where they’d seen her before, I had to check IMDB.

That would explain her intermittent Aussie accent (not a spoiler Grin).

I didn't even twig that she was meant to be Australian! She sounded British to me.
sashagabadon · 03/01/2022 17:47

I saw her on the One show talking about this, she is English but brought up in Australia and now returned to U.K. She does sound more British than Aus though. Maybe it’s hard to remember when you can genuinely do both accents rather than putting one accent on?

TonTonMacoute · 03/01/2022 17:54

So many red flags for Helen's relationship. Her fiancé is hideously controlling.

DH keeps 'advising' her to dump him! She is so sweet and he's utterly awful.

We are enjoying it though.

Piggywaspushed · 03/01/2022 18:05

The LOD actress is actually Australian/British dual national. She moved to Australia when she was 14. She studied drama in WA...

Piggywaspushed · 03/01/2022 18:06

I think she maybe sounded more English on The One Show because of where she was. I ma sure in Australia , she would sound Australian.

SoupDragon · 03/01/2022 18:15

She was in Our Girl too. Sounded completely British.

butterpuffed · 03/01/2022 19:11

I didn't know you could die from a scorpion bite ? Or perhaps he died of fright ?

It's quite weird...never saw Fargo all but the odd, quirky characters remind me of Twin Peaks.

the80sweregreat · 03/01/2022 19:42

Lots of actors tend to have that stuttering way of speaking these days . Nicola walker ( spooks , last tango in Halifax) is terrible for doing this too
Maybe it's a drama school thing?

Pythian · 03/01/2022 19:52

I thought the buried man died because the storm blew sand into his breathing tube and blocked it up. I don't think a scorpion sting would do it, although perhaps if you were already weak from hunger/dehydration/fear... we probably won't get to find out because it looks like being yet another thing that JD isn't going to bother telling the police about.
