Just finished episode one and need to talk about it!!!

Didn't like much of the episode to be honest. But the ending! I'm floored! Was not expecting that.

Havering Yes, I suppose so. I wouldn't mind having her utility room, either.

MissTrip82 · 07/01/2022 10:29

I’m enjoying it more now. It’s still a bit clunky. They’re navigating what to me are fairly normal issues - I’d be surprised if anyone who has teenage kids has never heard of anyone at all declaring themselves non-binary.

The Che character I’m finding more interesting - coming across as extremely self-centred and selfish. I don’t think they’ll actually give a shit about Miranda.

I’ve never met anyone who used terms like ‘woke’ or ‘virtue signalling’ who wasn’t an actual arsehole. As for the person who ‘cringed’ because a character uses a wheelchair……Jesus Christ.

dayswithaY · 07/01/2022 10:45

Where is Steve in all this? We saw him early on bumbling around like an old man, but no one has really mentioned him with regards to Miranda's "affair" and she's at home and in bed alone.

I cringed when Miranda messaged Che, in the show they will probably fall deeply in love but in reality, Che would forget Miranda in a nano second.

Wanderingowl · 07/01/2022 10:48

I agree with this. When a TV show is bad, people turn off and stop talking about it. People are telling on themselves with their commitment to detail exactly why they hate it and why they are so personally offended lmao.

Have you been living under the same rock as the main characters? "So bad it's good," has been common parlance since at least the late 90s and with the rise of snarky reviews, "hate-watching" has never been more popular. AJLT, is what's called a compelling failure. It's awful and utterly fails at being what it has set out to be. But catching up each week to see just how awful it is, is equally as entertaining as if it had been quite good.

How many episodes left? Just the 6?

The last episode was bloody rubbish and I've been really wanting to enjoy it

There’s ten in total. Last one airs on Feb 3rd.
VodselForDinner · 07/01/2022 11:33

@GellerYeller

Also I was convinced when Carrie said 'this isn't healthy' into thin air in her apartment that they had hastily edited out a Big flashback/apparition!
That’s a really interesting point.

I wonder if there are lots of flashbacks to Big and Carrie’s relationship that were edited out due to the allegations against Chris Noth?

Duckswaddle · 07/01/2022 12:03

It’s an absolute shitshow isn’t it. I’m watching out of love of the original series but it’s utterly terrible.

KillingMeDeftly · 07/01/2022 12:30

@dayswithaY The actor playing Steve is a regular in another tv show so that will be why we've not seen him since the first episode.

Me too
Peachyqueen · 07/01/2022 13:25

I read yesterday that he had been "hastily" edited out of a flashback/fantasy scene in the season finale, so you could well be correct.

That was in reply to @VodselForDinner, not sure why the quote didn't work
CloseYourEyesAndSee · 07/01/2022 13:27

They did say there was a scene from the finale that was cut but probably not loads of scenes with him in.

AnnunciataZ · 07/01/2022 13:52

Well said.

GellerYeller · 07/01/2022 14:21

Having Big appear at this stage just makes me think of Ally McBeal-Billy wasn't it?-for some reason! There's a 90s throwback for you!

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/01/2022 20:24

I was on the other thread but quiet

I’m def enjoying more

I do see it from. Carries POV as my husband died 10yrs ago

Stil can’t believe Miranda is gay /bi

Yorkshirelass04 · 07/01/2022 21:19

@NurseButtercup

What I mean is I am sufficiently invested from the original series to want to see what happens to the characters. But I am spending a lot of time cringing.

This is not being a martyr

Yorkshirelass04 · 07/01/2022 21:21

@AnnunciataZ

I agree on the wheelchair point. But people are calling it woke and virtue signalling as it's lacking substance from other directions. These women are being portrayed as naive when in reality they would not be.

ChimChimeny · 07/01/2022 21:58

and she's at home and in bed alone.

I assumed Steve still has Scout & was at work.

I'm in the 'hate watching but sticking with it out of loyalty' camp as well.

ChimChimeny · 07/01/2022 22:00

Someone called it after the previous episode that Charlotte would end up hopping on the band wagon with 'Rock' & it looked that way at the end of the latest episode

Wanderingowl · 08/01/2022 11:33

@ChimChimeny

Someone called it after the previous episode that Charlotte would end up hopping on the band wagon with 'Rock' & it looked that way at the end of the latest episode
And again it was all for stupid reasons. A 12 year old doesn't want the same things in their room that have been there since they were a baby???? Really??? The murals were babyish and old fashioned. The dolls were old fashioned. The shade of pink on the walls feels old fashioned and many girls are very firm about saying they don't like pink at this age. Not because they particularly don't like pink but because they are sick of it being assumed they like pink because they are a girl. And in general, teenagers tend to like bolder, slightly clashing colours for their rooms. I think it just feels more energetic and vibrant in comparison to the calmer shades adults often favour in living areas. Rose isn't asking for anything that wouldn't be normal for a girl to want.

I also think it would be totally normal for any girl to feel like maybe they weren't a girl in the face of Charlotte's very restrictive, hyper femininity that she chooses and pushes on her daughters. She is like a brunette, Chanel Barbie and wants her daughters to be that too. I also thought looking at the episode, possibly meanly, that if my mother, my role model for womanhood, absolutely destroyed her face with fillers, I would very, very possibly freak out and reject womanhood completely. I get it, I'm mid-40s, I don't love the ageing process. The thought of turning that back a little is tempting. But taking things as far as Kristen Davies, and by extension Charlotte, has, must send really odd messages to their children.

ChimChimeny · 08/01/2022 18:40

@Wanderingowl absolutely. Nowadays girls can't just like skateboarding or have short hair, it has to mean something and encouraged to identify as something. Aargh, drives me mad.

I've remembered something else, Charlotte was furious when she discovered Carrie and Big's affair but her reaction to Miranda was totally different.

Purpleraspberry · 08/01/2022 19:15

Re Charlotte and Harry's reaction to Rose/Rock wanting to identify as a male, they said it is Harry who is said to be struggling, however I'd imagine it'd be more likely to be Charlotte who would struggle.

Appalonia · 08/01/2022 19:37

I just started a thread about this, but On the Verge on Netflix is a hugely entertaining show about women which has heart and intelligence, written by the fabulous Julie Delpy, way more entertaining and truthful than this pile of crap!

Maybe because it's written by a woman...?

JacquelineCarlyle · 08/01/2022 19:56

That's interesting @Appalonia as I tried watching that but couldn't get into it. Gave up after 4 episodes.
