Just finished episode one and need to talk about it!!!

Didn't like much of the episode to be honest. But the ending! I'm floored! Was not expecting that.

The Miranda vibrator scene with Brady knocking on the door was BEYOND GRIM!

DottyHarmer · 10/01/2022 11:01

Up to date, and still, as a pp coined it, “Three Karens on a journey.” It feels like a series made by missionaries to educate heathens.

Every episode the ignorant characters must “learn” something, eg Carrie and cultural appropriation. As well as parents being sternly lectured on how to accept a non-binary 12-year-old and how you must not judge an old friend behaving like a mad person.

I agree with Janice Turner in that this whole thing seems like someone’s opinion of middle-aged women. And that opinion ain’t too flattering.

workshy44 · 10/01/2022 11:37

They are all so bad now that Carrie and Charlotte are the best and least annoying actors .
Charlottes face has really settled down
I do enjoy it but maybe because its so bad its good ? I really cannot stand Miranda and she used to be one of my favorites. Thank god for Anthony and all the new characters (aside from Che) are great
I think it is clear that they gave Cynthia Nixon far too much power, they had lost Samantha and it would have been dead in the water without her signing on.
I could get over most of it but the gushing , it is so so cringe. At every angle we are told how cool, funny and charismatic "Che" is and "they" are absolutely none of those things.

thebellagio · 10/01/2022 14:39

I'm so confused by the whole show to be honest.

I bloody loved SATC. It was my comfort show (until the two movies which were unwatchable) so my expectations were low to start with. But my god they've set the bar low haven't they?

Carrie I don't mind. She's still self-obsessed and wants everyone to focus on her all the time, but she's who Carrie would still be. Same as Anthony - he's single-handedly carrying the show right now.

Charlotte is still the same character, although I would have thought that the issues with Rose are more a reaction to the 'uber feminine little girl' that Charlotte projects onto her rather than being a trans child (e.g. wanting to wear trousers and ride a skateboard rather than a floral oscar de la renta gown?). I think a more interesting storyline would have been Lily wanting to know more about her heritage and explore issues with adoption as she grows into a young lady.

As for Miranda.

Well.

Where do we start?

Firstly the cheating. Not one of them seemed to be concerned that Miranda has cheated on Steve and is seemingly wanting to start an affair? The old Miranda would NEVER have done that to Steve (even after he cheated in the first movie). Secondly, I swear that there was an early episode (perhaps series 2) where she's mistaken for a lesbian by a coworker, and they kiss and her reaction is "no, I'm definitely not into women".

Then there's the whole professor storyline. I like the fact that they've expanded the professor's character and you learn more about who she is as a person and her family life. She's a great addition, and a potentially very good character. But the fact that a high profile lawyer (who had previously dated Robert Leeds) wouldn't know how to talk to a black person just seemed so ridiculous, and to be honest, I don't think the show has recovered from that stupid scene.

The character of Che is utterly awful. Che and the Podcast are the reason people hate the show. There's not a single redeeming feature about Che, and the character is being pushed so much. How the hell has Carrie not gone straight to Che to ask "WTF are you doing with my friend?" Che comes across as predatory, only caring about themselves and doesn't respect anyones boundaries. Who comes into someones house and lights up a joint while the homeowner sleeps?

With no humour or camp aspect, no Samantha, no Stamford, I really can't see this coming back for series 2.

Does anyone know what the ratings are like?

DottyHarmer · 10/01/2022 14:59

I agree that Steve has been completely ignored, after being portrayed as a decrepit deaf old bloke. Can you imagine if the storyline had been Steve dallying with a non-binary dude or dudess whilst Miranda struggled with a hearing aid? Is it only Miranda (or Cynthia Nixon) we have to be non-judgemental about?

ChimChimeny · 10/01/2022 15:10

Does anyone else think it's weird that Miranda & her professor are all buddy buddy & she's sharing such personal info? I know they aren't the typical professor/student combo because they are similar age but surely it would be more professional

crochetmonkey74 · 10/01/2022 15:13

You know, I have been struggling to really consolidate what I think about it - I am a mega fan of the original- and found the first film OK and even the second film was a good comfort watch sometimes.
I think it is just that they do not speak like themselves at all!
I'm not a disimilar age (bit younger) and my female friends share ideas, remember back to their lives- joke etc

It has lost ALL the humour
I know Big has died - but if you think to the film- after the break up- it's gloomy, then punctuated with humour- Carrie getting drunk at dinner etc
The latest episode where Charlotte says " Why can't everyone just stay as they are" and Carrie replie " Some of don't have that luxury" it's so po faced and preachy. The old writers could have put something funny here about how they all used to eat dollar pizza/shag strange men/have perms basically anything a real group of women would say
Im disappointed in Miranda- she often had unpopular and cynical opinions- why is she suddenly a shadow?

Also- one of my big loves was seeing the city- the only places they have eaten have been high end instagram places-
I want to see women saying outrageous silly things in NYC - this is just them apologising for everything

Thats a good point - they always said that the city was the 5th character, but it's definitely been lacking. Remember when Charlotte used to cope with her stress by going for a run around the park with Antony? Or Carrie and Samantha used to talk while walking down the street? Perhaps this is a covid precaution thing, but now you've mentioned it, I've realised how much it's missing
JMAngel1 · 10/01/2022 16:17

@thebellagio
Yes, just watched S1 Ep3 SATC (rewatching to try to reignite by love for the show) and Miranda gets mistaken for a lesbian and tries to kiss a girl in a lift. Interestingly, her boss lawyer’s wife tries to add Miranda and her “lover” to her dinner guest list as she wanted a “lesbian couple so she would be considered hip”. Didn’t seem to register that much 24 years ago as it was just a line - no major big deal screech like it would be in the new show.

JMAngel1 · 10/01/2022 16:19

Rewatching SATC has opened my eyes to just how sexual a show it was. It does make the Che kitchen scene look pretty tame. And the vibrator/Brady scene tbh. Maybe we are being ageist thinking that women of their (our) age shouldn’t be seen as sexual anymore? (Although Brady scene was ick!)

crochetmonkey74 · 10/01/2022 16:26

And Big's funeral?
He was all old New York, records, red wine, cigars, Italian restaurants. His funeral was in a white cube ! Much more like what Alex Petrovsky would have had. I didnt get this at all.
So far my fave scenes have been carrie in her old apartment, or walking the streets in the natasha episode and miranda and Charlotte in Starbucks!

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/01/2022 17:22

Indeed old show was all sex. Every episode be someone’s gagging. Usually Samantha 😂

So yes now they (we/me/us) are 50 ish does that mean no sex

Tho obv most of the sex was as single

Be nice for Carrie to find second love

It can happen

JMAngel1 · 10/01/2022 17:42

I'm rooting for the yummy radio production man Grin

Wanderingowl · 10/01/2022 21:04

Secondly, I swear that there was an early episode (perhaps series 2) where she's mistaken for a lesbian by a coworker, and they kiss and her reaction is "no, I'm definitely not into women".

That can actually be very, very normal for bisexuals. I assumed I was straight for such a long, long time after my first kiss with a woman doing nothing for me. Years later when I was constantly finding myself more and more drawn to women, I had to think back and examine that. I realised that actually, my first kiss with a guy had done fuck all for me either. I had kissed him when I was 15, not because I was attracted to him but because I was really keen to have a boyfriend and he was interested. At 19 I kissed the woman I kissed, not because I was in to her but because I was keen to experiment with women and so was she.

Turns out, kissing people who just happen to be available when we want to try something new, isn't always much of a turn on. It doesn't necessarily mean anything definitive about our sexuality. If we are attracted to both sexes, it's really easy to assume that a meh first opposite sex experience was just that and we'll find something better before too long. Whereas we tend to assume that a meh first experience with someone of the same sex, defines that part of us.

Miranda becoming attracted to a woman in her 50s wouldn't be unusual, even after 1 shit kiss in a lift in her late 20s. Though I would have preferred if she was already divorced when the series returned. I think in real life her marriage to Steve wouldn't have worked. They could have written it that they had really tried after the first movie but that as Brady had gotten older, they had drifted and were now amicably divorced. Steve could have been remarried with a couple of younger kids. Miranda focussed on Brady and her career. Then she could meet a woman she is drawn to and never, ever masturbates to the memory of her while talking to her child. That could have been an interesting story.

ElephantInPrint · 12/01/2022 22:53

I'm rewatching seasons 1-6 (haven't rewatched for years) I thought I disliked Carrie the most but Charlotte is insufferable.

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/01/2022 09:27

Anyone seen this weeks

Plan to watch after lunch

x2boys · 13/01/2022 09:36

Yes I have just watched this week,s episode, much better imo more focus on storylines and less focus on shoving issues into every scene .

Youdoyoutoday · 13/01/2022 09:49

Who the bloody hell is the actor playing peter?? It's bugging me!!

This episode was a bit less preachy, I still don't like Che, she's all oh I smoke weed, I forget things! Grow up!

Miranda trying to recreate the kitchen scene with Steve was cringe, how hard is it to come on to your own husband?? I'd hate to be in that situation!

And seema slipped in at cocktails, she's the new Samantha!

Mmm, I'm still not in awe of it!

KillingMeDeftly · 13/01/2022 11:21

@Youdoyoutoday Peter was played by Jon Tenney, who has been in a few things including Scandal and The Closer. He used to be married to Teri Hatcher of Lois Lane and Desperate Housewives fame.

Youdoyoutoday · 13/01/2022 11:23

Scandal!!! That's where is know him from!! Thank you @KillingMeDeftly

VodselForDinner · 13/01/2022 11:41

The scene after Carrie’s date when they came out of the restaurant was awful. More Team American than SATC.

Anthony is the new Miranda.

Groaned when Che reappeared. Ick.

Why is Steve decrepit?

BitcherOfBlakiven · 13/01/2022 11:53

The vomiting scene was just… Weird. I don’t get it.

Netaporter · 13/01/2022 12:15

Just watched this week's...

More Che stand-up bollocks vvv annoying. Steve looking like a hapless twat is also at odds with the effort Miranda and he made to get back together after his infidelity. I just don't see how Miranda would casually want an affair after that. It does not sit well I think. And the crass scene with Steve in the Kitchen? Ugh.

Loved Carrie's clothes this week, loved how Seema had become part of the gang (we need much more Seema and much less Che, preferably none). Loved the tennis obsession (although no idea why they've also made Harry look hapless too). Was an odd choice of outfit for LTW for the first tennis scene but I have been of those ladies trying to beat the old girls at the club Grin and the end of date scenes with Carrie...Shock but Anthony...steals every scene and deservedly so...

FajitaBonita · 13/01/2022 12:32

Oh Harry, are you Jewish? I didn’t know 🙄

ReeseWitherfork · 13/01/2022 12:51

Anyone seen this? The original tweet I mean. Blows your mind a bit!!!

Also included this reply as thought it was particularly poignant.
