I’m not a Dan fan particularly, just intrigued by his strange mixture of awkwardness and confidence. And his relationship with Nadiya.
Even I would be somewhat discombobulated by the vision of Nadiya in the training room in her practise dancewear, looking glorious. But Dan seems to be capable of maintaining an air of innocent appreciation. ’That’s good old Nadz over there! She’s a great teacher!’
But then, they produce their dance on the night and it feels like Dan knows. There’s an undercurrent of ‘Okay, I admit it, I’m a man and you, good old Nadz, are most definitely a woman!!’
Something authentic is created between the two of them, something not quite said outright.
I think that’s what Cynthia was responding to when she gave them a 9. She was giving an artistic impression mark rather than a technical merit one, like in ice skating, marking the dance as a piece of theatre.
(I’ll shut up about Dan now!)
