Anyone watching? I love this series and fancy Perez Grin He seems to have some extra timber on him.. I don’t like him in a suit, much prefer a fishermans knitted jumper on him..

Where were we left when the last series ended? Did he get together with someone? Someone who seemed to have shady motives? I can’t remember!

I was very disappointed in Duncan & presume the letter to the solicitor will land him in it!

Thomas Malone spent about 20yrs in prison didn't he so how long has Donna done?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 20/11/2021 22:23

Not husband, partner/close friend with whom she was romantically/sexually involved, but not publicly. Also, retired police officer who decided Thomas Malone was guilty and adjusted the evidence to make sure he was convicted. Can't remember now whether this was arrogance/laziness/incompetence or whether he suspected at the time that Donna was the real perp.

diddl · 21/11/2021 08:16

Is it implausible that Donna has been released & especially to her old house?

She hasn't served much of a sentance for murder has she?

SirSamuelVimes · 21/11/2021 08:45

I don't really know. You do get compassionate releases don't you? And she was meant to be at death's door. The bit I don't get is that the house was just sitting there waiting for her - who has been paying for it? Even if there's no mortgage (unlikely, she was running a bird sanctuary, not exactly a money spinner) there's still council tax and utilities to keep it ticking over. Can't see her son who wants nothing to do with her paying to keep it going. What happens to your assets when you go to prison for a crime like murder?

FluffyBooBoo · 21/11/2021 08:52

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

No, implausibly the copycat killing was the work of another murderer. What a dangerous place Shetland appears to be!
One year (in the 1980's I think) it was the murder capital of Europe.

There were two murders that year. Which per head of population is really high.

Most years there aren't any though, honest!

Furzebush · 21/11/2021 09:05

I missed the first two episodes and have no access to the iPlayer as outside the UK, so am completely at sea, but I’m in it for Jimmy’s strange smirk, Tosh’s perplexed eyebrows, Sandy’s gormlessness and teeny, tiny waist, and the scenery.

Did she go back to her old house? I thought it was just an empty property that had been rented / assigned to her?
Maireas · 21/11/2021 09:14

So the other men at the Lodge party on Fetlar were Galbraith, Niven Guthrie and who else?
So Galbraith was paying the care home fees out of guilt. Poor Maurice Ross, that was a sad scene.
I think Eve Galbraith, Dr Bedford and Fiona are all guilty.
I. Do. Not. Know. Why. Perez. Talks. Like. This. Maybe he thinks it makes him sound less Glaswegian?.

diddl · 21/11/2021 09:43

"Did she go back to her old house? I thought it was just an empty property that had been rented / assigned to her?"

Ah yes, possibly.

"Home" could be Shetland rather than the actual property.Blush

LadyEloise1 · 21/11/2021 09:49

Perez "love interest" could be seen a mile off. Smile

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/11/2021 10:06

Pretty sure it was Donna's old house, or meant to be. If she owned that house free of mortgage, as she may well have done if either she or her deceased husband inherited it, or if the mortgage got paid off out of insurance when he died, then all that would have to be covered while she was in prison would be the council tax and buildings insurance. She could have let it out.

Presumably most people who go to prison who own a house have a mortgage which they won't be able to pay any more so the property has to be sold.

Have started watching The Long Call on the strength of liking Vera and Shetland. Jury's out on that at present. Have not read any of Ann Cleeves' books. That may be next!

Lunde · 21/11/2021 21:34

Didn't Donna live at a house attached to the seal sanctuary in season 4?

I don't think that they are using the same property as her "house" in this series. Ironically it looks very much like the house that they used as Thomas Malone's house in season 4.

Faevern · 22/11/2021 23:20

I watched the long call, I enjoyed it.

I reckon in that letter Donna has told her solicitor that Jimmy and Duncan are trying to get rid of her. Jimmy by having her moved and she thinks Duncan is trying to poison her. She was deliberately goading him into it when they were lying on the bed.

Solicitor gets the letter and Donna is dead. I was also hoping he read the letter and called her bluff.

The rest of it, I haven’t got a clue, hope it’s not so rushed and implausible at the end.

SomepeopleareTERFSgetoverit · 23/11/2021 06:50

The gormless drug dealer has dropped out of the plot….is he coming back?

Could the drone footage have somehow revealed the missing girl’s grave and that’s why the diver had to be killed?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/11/2021 08:02

That's an interesting possibility!

FluffyBooBoo · 23/11/2021 09:12

Could the drone footage have somehow revealed the missing girl’s grave and that’s why the diver had to be killed?

I would say that's unlikely (if the writers are being logical), as she went missing in Fetlar, one of the islands in the North, and the drone footage was of Burra, which is another island but it's fairly central (and connected to the mainland by a bridge). It's not impossible they would have taken a body that far, but I would have thought it would be more likely for it to end up in the sea.

SoupDragon · 23/11/2021 09:38

Did the drone capture that car chase from episode 1?

Rhannion · 23/11/2021 09:41

@SoupDragon

Did the drone capture that car chase from episode 1?
Yes it did, that’s how Jimmy knew whose car it was.
SoupDragon · 23/11/2021 10:28

I've completely forgotten all the details from that bit 😂

SoupDragon · 23/11/2021 10:32

I don't have a clue what's going on any more. There are so many twisty bits and different threads in the story.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/11/2021 10:33

It was murdered twin's sister, implausibly.

GinnyMackesy · 23/11/2021 11:33

I'm waiting until after the final episode of this series - the first series I've watched - and then I'm going to start watching from series one. I cracked and ordered the DVD! I'm hoping it's one of the things that will help to get us through the winter months!

I'm thinking about ordering the books as another winter distraction. Does anyone know how they correspond with the TV series - is it best to read them in the order Ann Cleeves wrote them, for example?

LadyEloise1 · 23/11/2021 11:52

There are too many little sub plots.
Perhaps they'll all come together ?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 23/11/2021 12:54

Quite a few of the characters dropped out of last week's episode including the Iraqi (or were they Syrian?) family. Is this week's the last in this series?

SomepeopleareTERFSgetoverit · 23/11/2021 13:02
