Anyone watching? I love this series and fancy Perez Grin He seems to have some extra timber on him.. I don’t like him in a suit, much prefer a fishermans knitted jumper on him..

Where were we left when the last series ended? Did he get together with someone? Someone who seemed to have shady motives? I can’t remember!

Jimmy who was asking where he was and I was just waiting for him to say "by the Cake Fridge"

Duncan is daft agreed but very easy on the eye. I've had a crush on him since his Bruno Jenkins days in Casualty. Blush

@TheRustler

Does anyone else think the writing is a bit.. off this season? Lots of things set up then hastily brushed under the carpet, eg, Sandy's left for dead! Oh wait, he's fine. Suspect being bolshy and resistant in interview! Oh wait, a stern word from Jimmy and he's singing like a canary. I could do with 25% less Jimmy's dad, 10% fewer characters and everything a bit slower and easier to follow less frenetic.
Agreed, @TheRustler - and when they were looking at the vehicle the youngsters had used during the night of the attack on Logan's house, why didn't Sandy recognise it as the one that had knocked him down a couple of weeks ago?
shrugitoff · 11/11/2021 17:32

I agree too@TheRustler.
Too much going on, too many characters.
It's like it was all clear in the writer's head but difficult for a viewer.

Haven't read full thread as I'm a bit behind with eps, but I think ever since they stopped drawing direct from the books the writing has gone off the boil a bit. I've not read the books (or any Ann Cleeves) but going by the earlier seasons, she can certainly put a good plot together. Better than the scriptwriters doing it from scratch, it seems... Still watch it though. Grin

Me too - Bruno was a properly naughty chap, but he did have real personal charm Grin

I disagree. I thought the writing for seasons three and four were more interesting than the two seasons that drew from the novels. In fact I nearly didn't watch season three, and only caught up with it because I was told it was a big improvement. I haven't seen five, so can't comment on that one. I do agree that this season isn't so good though.

@SoupDragon

I assumed she was lining him up for assisted suicide.
Definitely, that what I took from that conversation. Donna is an absolutely vile person. She killed a young woman and then let an innocent man ( Thomas Malone in series 4) go to jail for 20 years.
NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 12/11/2021 08:27

I have absolutely no recollection of Bruno Jenkins in Casualty? When was he a character?

Mark Bonnar only came onto my radar about ten years ago, max. He's in a lot now though - the usual TV overkill of actors!

IntemperateSpirits · 12/11/2021 08:36

Ann Cleeves is very good at introducing a whole set of characters, who first all appear innocuous, then all incredibly guilty of something, until you can sift through all the evidence which itself first appeared to mean nothing and then all incriminating. It's never someone random, if you have someone seemingly random appear in a scene they needn't be in might as well be holding a red flag. Like the doctor chivving on his wife when Tosh was asking about the care home fees. Like Jimmy poo-pooing Tosh's questions. Like Sandy randomly deciding to dump his car and walk during a car chase, in order that he could get run over and then miraculously not only survive but recover completely in hours. Perhaps that's why he's changed from being a conscientious policeman to useless - he's actually become a vampire?

absolutelynotfabulous · 12/11/2021 09:05

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 not sure if that link opens. Grin.

Didn't Duncan himself also come under suspicion of the earlier murder in series 4 and was even taken into custody at one point? So he knows what she's like and that she would do nothing to help him. So I'm really not sure what he's up to.

absolutelynotfabulous · 12/11/2021 10:01

Yes, Duncan was under suspicion in s4. Just finished catching up with that series.

S5 now!

I think it's just guilt. If he hadn't been shagging Donna Killick back in the day, when they were both married, Donna wouldn't have been pregnant with his son, and the girl she killed wouldn't have threatened to tell Donna's abusive husband about the affair, so Donna wouldn't have killed her.

I reckon he feels responsible for the girl's death, as well as the shit life that Donna and her (their) son had living with the abusive husband, while he swanned off doing his own thing for years.

Assisted suicide is interesting. I'm not sure I can see Donna wanting to go peacefully, she's so angry. Try to convince Duncan to do a murder-suicide? Or kill Duncan and then herself? She made that comment about Jimmy not knowing what to do without Duncan a couple of episodes back, while the camera lingered ominously on the back of Duncan's neck. I get the feeling she wants to lash out at the people she's angry at before she goes.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 12/11/2021 14:27

Thanks for that link @absolutelynotfabulous. Still have no memory of him though!

muldersspeedos · 12/11/2021 18:02

Last week I was distracted by the cake fridge and this week by Perez in a polo shirt.
I hope Sandy gets sacked. I've not liked him from the very start.
Donna is a right nasty pasty. I had sympathy until she was so vile to Kate.
Duncan's an eejit

SirSamuelVimes · 12/11/2021 18:11

I didn't like polo shirt Perez. He needs to get back in a chunky knit fisherman's jumper, asap!

GinnyMackesy · 12/11/2021 18:32

This thread has me wondering about starting a Cake Fridge. Eggs, marmalade and even the Honesty Box itself have been stolen in the past, so I'm not too sure! But maybe Jimmy will turn up to investigate the thefts... Halo

muldersspeedos · 12/11/2021 19:26

I do like the jumpers but the polo shirt did give my eyes a bee treat. It's good to mix it up you know. I really don't like the unshaven for a few days look though.

SirSamuelVimes · 12/11/2021 19:30

He isn't looking at good this series. Don't know if it's just age or if he'd been hitting the lockdown booze!

Sunflowers765 · 12/11/2021 21:03

I have absolutely no idea what's going on. Still love Jimmy though. Grin

Maireas · 12/11/2021 21:43

Douglas Henshall does not look good. He's become a bit of a bauchle. Get a shave and smarten up (disclaimer - I may have turned into my mother).
There was no transexual nun.
I'm trying to work out why Sr Carolyn buried the necklace and why someone sent her the sshh postcard.
Duncan does not look good. He and Jimmy are beginning to make Billy look attractive. (Sorry, Billy).

CaptainThe95thRifles · 12/11/2021 22:11

I like grungey Perez, in polo shirt, suit or jumper. I'm not one for discriminating against a wee bit of stubble Grin

Now this Henshall, not so much:

PickupaPenguin8 · 12/11/2021 22:32

I honestly can’t make head nor tail of it all. The plot is a complete mishmash. I agree Jimmy looks a bit the worst for wear. I find this one really depressing as well.
