Anyone watching? I love this series and fancy Perez Grin He seems to have some extra timber on him.. I don’t like him in a suit, much prefer a fishermans knitted jumper on him..

Where were we left when the last series ended? Did he get together with someone? Someone who seemed to have shady motives? I can’t remember!

OP posts:

I agree that we didn't need to see Logan have his breakdown. We know that he inadvertently killed Fraser, it could easily have been confirmed another way.
There are so many unpleasant, devious and furtive people on Shetland. Apart from the refugees.

Rhannion · 13/11/2021 00:44

@PickupaPenguin8

I honestly can’t make head nor tail of it all. The plot is a complete mishmash. I agree Jimmy looks a bit the worst for wear. I find this one really depressing as well.
Have a look for series 4 and some of the plot will be clearer. Donna, the woman who is dying had a son with Duncan. When she was pregnant she murdered a young woman to shut her up as she didn’t want her abusive husband to know that the child wasn’t his. A man, Thomas Malone went to jail for the murder of the young woman and the story all came out that he was innocent and Donna was the guilty one. Now Donna is back in Shetland to die and for obvious reasons she is very unpopular.
muldersspeedos · 13/11/2021 01:44

I think the screaming nun killed the lawyer guy to keep him quiet about her whereabouts.

Inkanta · 13/11/2021 05:43

Yes Jimmy is looking a bit rough but still gorgeous.

JingsMahBucket · 13/11/2021 10:16

@muldersspeedos ooooh that’s an interesting theory!

JingsMahBucket · 13/11/2021 10:18

And Jimmy is supposed to be looking rough. He only buried his mother about 2 weeks ago, maybe less. Heck, he left her funeral to go back to work. And his dad’s dementia is becoming apparent to him. He’s personally stressed unlike before.

SirSamuelVimes · 13/11/2021 11:04

I think there's something deeply dodgy in her past, she's escaped to the nunnery to hide from it (possibly linked to what she was doing in London if it is the daughter of the guy in the care home). I reckon Alex Galbraith was trying to help her / convince her to testify or something, which is why he was bumped off. We've still got the issue of the untraceable ghost bullets which makes it seem more like an professional job.

Am out of the habit of having to wait for weekly installments of a TV series! Too much netflix. Finding the wait very frustrating though it does add the fun of theorising through the week I suppose.

Maireas · 13/11/2021 11:47

I'm suspicious of Sr Carolyn, but she seems too flakey to be a murderer. Plus it looked like a professional hit. I suspect Dr Bedford. Also Carrie, who has somehow involved Mick Muir.
Some kind of drug involvement.
I do agree with pp who suggested that Donna Killick will try to get Duncan to help her with euthanasia.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/11/2021 16:21

Late to the party here, but have just watched ep 4. I thought they did a good job of showing Creggan's disintegration and PTSD. Poor man. I would imagine he won't be fit to plead and will be off to a psychiatric hospital on the mainland.

That's one storyline cleared out of the way now. It seems Creggan and his son were not involved in Galbraith's death. So that still leaves bankrupt cook, Creggan's BIL who was on the dive boat, screaming nun, missing girl, Niven (sp), possibly dodgy doctor whose wife worked for Galbraith and was having an affair with him, etc to be at the forefront in the remaining two episodes.

Re Series 4: that was the one where Tosh and Jimmy went to Norway to investigate far right extremists. A Shetland journalist who was murdered at a music festival at the start of the series was looking into that. Her Dad was a retired police officer who'd investigated the Lizzie Kilmuir murder and decided early on it was Thomas, so fabricated evidence to make sure he got convicted. By the time his daughter was murdered, he was having a relationship with Donna who was widowed and running a seal sanctuary with her (and Duncan's) son. The journalist turned out to have photos that implicated Donna in Lizzie's murder, and she'd confronted her Dad with them.

Police man dad killed his own daughter in the same manner of the Lizzie murder in order to frame Thomas Malone after his release to the island and police man dad did it to protect Donna who he was now having a relationship with.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/11/2021 17:24

Not hugely plausible, tbh, but there we go. I find these odd twists at the end of each series a bit annoying but put up with them as I just love the scenery and most of the regular actors.

Acting Procurator Fiscal was in The Archers for a bit as Anisha, vet with a special interest in horses.

Not only is the murder rate on Shetland insanely high, but the number of women who kill is massively out of step with real crime statistics! Most crime dramas do this. I suppose if you tried to be realistic you'd have one female murderer in a hundred series, or something on those lines, and everybody would discount all female characters as suspect almost immediately.

CassandraCross · 13/11/2021 19:03

Lost lockdown opportunity to add up all the female murderers in fiction, TV dramas and films and compare them with the actual number of female murderersGrin.

ChoccyJules · 13/11/2021 23:28

I agree that it’s becoming too confusing and am only hanging in there for glimpses of Mark Bonnar.

I always liked Sandy but if he’s been leaking stuff I am willing to change my mind.

Galbraith‘s assistant‘s husband was in Such a hurry I could see the red flag painted on his chest…

MichaelSemolina · 14/11/2021 08:53

I'm a big fan, and save viewing for a Saturday evening, but agree things seem a bit all over the place this series. Don't care too much though as I love just looking at Shetland/pretend Shetland and watching Dougie Henshall (although not in that way) and Mark Bonnarrrrrrr (defo in that way).

LadyEloise1 · 14/11/2021 09:40

I don't get the love for Mark Bonnar but Dougie Henshall - now that's a different story Grin

absolutelynotfabulous · 14/11/2021 10:33

I don't know if it's just me, but Perez always looks to me like he's smirking.

DevilWaresPrada · 14/11/2021 21:08

So annoying that the BBC won't put all the episodes on iPlayer. Grrrrrrr

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 15/11/2021 07:19

I actually like having to wait to watch a good series, week by week.

Trouble is that we all got used to binge-watching over lockdown.

SoupDragon · 15/11/2021 07:24

I agree. I watch most things on a binge basis, it's nice to have a few things that I have to wait for.

I do with they'd put previous series up though

Lunde · 15/11/2021 10:52

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g - That's one storyline cleared out of the way now. It seems Creggan and his son were not involved in Galbraith's death. Many of the chief suspects I don't see as carrying out a professional-style hit on Galbraith, or hiring a hitman or having access to illegal bullets (now that Creggan's have been ruled out).

To me the manner of death and the level of reach (getting threats to the sub) seems to circle back to the drug smuggling. The doctor is acting very suspiciously is he involved`? I wonder about Niven and why a businessman of his stature is involving himself so much in the Shetland and Orkney political campaign - what does he want in return? I would also not rule out Niven's brother Strewan (owner of the SUV), even though he has only had a small role so far. He was hostile to basic questions and he manages a nice big warehouse down by the port ... handy for drug smuggling?

I am expecting some sort of violence from Donna with Duncan in danger

GinnyMackesy · 15/11/2021 11:05

@DevilWaresPrada

I agree!

But...the DVD of series 1-5 comes from ITV. I'm not sure why or how that works - do they own the rights?

Mydogisagentleman · 16/11/2021 09:17

I watched the latest episode this morning.
It’s all as clear as mud. I think it’s my last

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/11/2021 09:23

My parents put me onto Shetland (and Vera, previously). I told them the other day that I'd now seen all the previous five series on BritBox and caught up with the first four episodes of this one. My Dad said 'Any idea what's going on?' Grin I told him no, truthfully. I don't really care, frankly. I watch for the scenery, the accents and Douglas Henshall and Mark Bonnar.

FluffyBooBoo · 16/11/2021 09:25

The series is made by ITV for the BBC. I assume it's something to do with that.

SirSamuelVimes · 16/11/2021 10:04

So true!! Grin
