New thread!

Why would Canada send Serena back to Gilead? They want to prosecute her for war crimes.

For people new to the thread, the punishment for spoilers is we take an eye!

The Wall for second offences! Grin

Praise be. Other fans, a podcast...I am truly blessed.

LODReturn · 29/07/2021 12:54

Will be re-watching the last episode again tonight. My weekly ritual is now watching THT live on a Sunday, listening to the podcast & reading this forum in the week and then re-watching on a Thursday evening. I find that I pick up on so much more second time as I have the wisdom of you wise ladies to guide my viewing! It's also a good excuse to have a G&T on a week night!

imacuddler · 29/07/2021 15:12

Be careful listening to the podcast. I just clicked on a bonus episode which I thought was about something else and it gave away the ending 😭

GoingGently · 29/07/2021 20:24

I am watching Alias Grace now for an extra Atwood hit... anyone seen it? Is it good? Just started

Nooooooooo

I really liked both the book and the film ( I’d it a film or a series? My memory is so shit)
ohthestruggles · 30/07/2021 08:25

But I also agree that the long drawn out pauses and long focussed shots of June's face are losing impact and are becoming repetitive and tedious.

This. Praise be. New to this thread and finding the whole series so drawn out. I found the last episode hard to watch and I'm finding June more and more irritating to be honest. The CONSTANT attempts to escape and the lack of consequences for her are becoming tiresome. I want to see a bit more of Nick and to know more about Lawrence, he's very intriguing.

ohthestruggles · 30/07/2021 08:28

Also agree that Luke has never been very concerned about Hannah atall and has done diddly squat to try and find her.

BIWI · 30/07/2021 10:14

But remember, he's back in Canada looking after Nicole - who isn't even his child!

Is that because he is not the focus of the story though?

Could be a nudge to the viewer to try to make him not as likeable? Or maybe he has been and they just haven't showed it. If they showed the full backstory of all the characters the episodes would be 5 hours long.
ohthestruggles · 30/07/2021 10:48

@WorldsBestBoss true I suppose. I'm just frustrated with it as I find it's taken a major nose dive and I'm sad!

Sagealicious · 30/07/2021 11:06

@ohthestruggles

What exactly can he do though? Maybe he feels powerless?
CurbsideProphet · 30/07/2021 13:15

@ohthestruggles to be fair to Luke he was devasted when Hannah wasn't on the Angel plane. We don't see much of what Luke actually does because the intention of THT was always to depict the experience from the POV of the handmaid.

I thought the flashbacks were to show there is light and shade in all relationships. June and Luke did not have the perfect marriage and Luke was not the perfect husband. That doesn't mean they can't come back to each other. I thought it tied in with Luke's frustration that June hadn't escaped when she had the chance, but he still remains faithful to her, cares for Nicole, and planted that flower in the garden.

I'm behind in Eyes on Gilead. I need to catch up and see what they think 🙂

ElephantOfRisk · 30/07/2021 13:24

But we expect that June will continue to fight to get Hannah back even whilst she is in Canada, use Mayday contacts (which Luke also had) even go back and try to get her. We've placed no expectation of that on LUke even before he had Nichole and let's face it, he could pass on that responsibility onto others. I think that he accepted that there was no point him trying to get June out as it was her choice to remain but he remained passive (as far as we know) in terms of anything he could do for his daughter.

He might feel powerless or whatever but we wouldn't excuse June to do that, do we expect that she will just settle into canadian life with Nichole and just say "oh well"? I think him being weak will be the straw that breaks the camel's back. I can't see June settling for him.

Crinkle77 · 30/07/2021 13:24

I agree with @Sagealicious not really sure what people expect Luke to be able to do? He's looking after Nicole and he seems to be doing work with refugee organisations in Canada so not like he's being totally idle.

Embracelife · 30/07/2021 13:26

Yes Luke has been shown meeting ambassadors and so on to raise the case

SomethingOnce · 30/07/2021 14:52

but then the soldiers doing the inspection on the boat might recognise her and say that's how she got out!

You’d hardly own up to that oversight!

Hello! Glad to have found this thread. I've been reading the others but only caught up on Sunday's episode today!

NigellaSeed · 30/07/2021 23:25

@BettyAndFrank

Under his eye 👁

I wonder if June will suggest an exchange…herself for Hannah?

Omg yes! Sad but believable
MattDillonsEyebrows · 31/07/2021 07:08

Ooh thanks for this thread! So glad I found it!

Does anyone know how long Luke has been in Canada for? They mentioned years last night, Luke escaped right at the beginning didn’t he? And I think Hannah was 8 when she was taken, so surely would be almost a teen now.

Also another point, is the new batch of handmaids. I’m sure I remember reading/hearing that the handmaids were a temporary thing in Gilead to restart the human population. They were all supposed to have ‘sinned’ in some way but very much sins of the heart (eg divorce). The women who wore blue dresses hadn’t sinned, got a husband but not a handmaid , so I assume they would be fertile? The infertile ones became Martha’s or presumably aunts.
What sins would the second generation of handmaids have committed? Or are they still a part of the first generation and just been found?

In the last series the Econowife from the family caught helping June was made a Handmaid as a punishment. I’d guess it’s along those lines.

He's been there around 5 years I think, Hannah's 9 or 10.
