New thread!

Why would Canada send Serena back to Gilead? They want to prosecute her for war crimes.

OP posts:

@ElephantOfRisk I totally agree! He escaped capture and fled to Canada without trying to rescue Hannah or June and no suggestion of guilt there!!!

OverByYer · 28/07/2021 12:17

Yes that aspect of Luke’s character is discussed in the podcast as well.
Will be interesting to see how their relationship plays out

GoingGently · 28/07/2021 13:46

@HopelesslydevotedtoGu

Agreeing with a comment on the previous thread - I think would have been better for June to escape to Canada with Nicole. We could have watched June's life in Canada, and have another handmaid become the main character in Gilead.

I would have liked to see June struggling with guilt about leaving Hannah, raising Nicole, clashing with Luke, and trying to help Mayday from Canada.

I could imagine June joining humanitarian missions back and Luke disagreeing with this, or her contacting the main plot handmaid in Gilead with plans, and Luke feeling she should focus on moving on.

My enjoyment of the series plummeted when June didn't leave with Nicole. Until then the tension had been built up on June trying to survive and escape, and it genuinely felt that anything could happen. When she didn't leave, and didn't face repercussions, it took a lot of the tension out of the plot.

Now she has gone to Canada it feels a bit FINALLY. Glad to see the story moving on finally.

I wonder if we might get that now with Janine?
GoingGently · 28/07/2021 13:47

I have to say that although the series is imperfect I am loving watching and will genuinely feel a bit bereft when it's over! TV and the podcast are brilliant companions. Can't wait for Sunday already!

Thanks @GrandPrismatic

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 28/07/2021 14:39

I wonder if we might get that now with Janine? That's a good point, Going

Episode 5 preview showed June finding out that Janine's son had been killed in a car accident and her lying to Janine that he was living by the beach in California.

I think the plot is missing that other women have babies left behind - and as far as Janine is aware, she has two kids in Gilead.

It's quite a long way from Chicago to California, though. Too far for her to bob about in milk tanker transport.

GoingGently · 28/07/2021 14:48

I'd be SO curious to see what she'd get up to if she didn't have June leading her! I fear she'd just latch onto someone else and be led astray somehow

BIWI · 28/07/2021 15:18

I agree. While I like Janine, I don't think her character is strong enough to lead the story from here on. I think the focus will have to remain on June.

WorldsBestBoss · 28/07/2021 15:34

I'm wondering now if the focus is going to move away from Gilead. They've killed off pretty much every other "known" handmaid during June's journey to Canada - it's almost as if they're tying up loose ends. Might mean that Janine is also a goner.

LODReturn · 28/07/2021 16:02

The Eyes of Gilead Podcast is great - some real insights that I missed & some random ideas that may (or may not!) be a bit far fetched. One word of caution - they do refer to the trailer several times. I avoided the trailer so I wouldn't have any spoilers but am now thinking of what is going to happen when they say xxxx happened in the trailer.

I'm only up to the current episode podcast and there is definitely one thing they have mentioned from the trailer that hasn't happened yet so if you are still avoiding spoilers, don't listen yet!

Back to THT, I'm hoping that the flashbacks to June telling Janine her son was by the beach mean that we will see more of Janine & she isn't dead (why show it otherwise?). I'm also hoping for more Aunt Lydia although not sure if the show will focus on Canada for the rest of this series as most of the protagonists are there and it will end with June going back so that we can have another series...

GoingGently · 28/07/2021 16:32

@LODReturn I remember thinking that RE podcast and trailer, but my memory is so awful at the moment I can't remember what the spoiler was! Praise be!! Grin

shivermetimbers77 · 28/07/2021 16:44

I worry that June may do something illegal to get herself sent back, a bit like the ex-cons in the Shawshank Recemption

BettyAndFrank · 28/07/2021 16:54

Under his eye 👁

I wonder if June will suggest an exchange…herself for Hannah?

Im the same. Heard it and thought ‘ oh no’ but now for the life of me can’t recall what it was at all. Thank goodness for menopausal brains

Soubriquet · 28/07/2021 19:21

Sooooo I’ve finally got round to watching on all4

Currently on episode 3 and I’ve read all of thread one. Spoilers be damned Grin

I agree there are too many plot holes now to successfully cover but it’s still a good program anyway

OverByYer · 28/07/2021 20:41

Good effort @Soubriquet

theneverendinglaundry · 28/07/2021 21:39

I do hope that we see Janine again. And I would really like to see AL's reaction to June being in Canada!

Agree that there are lots of plot holes, but I'm still hooked.

Just watching episode 6. Seems a bit too easy on the boat

OverByYer · 29/07/2021 07:32

Yes lots of plot holes and poetic licence on the boat, but I’ll just roll with it

JoeGrundyWasMyRoleModel · 29/07/2021 08:19

We have been sent good threads.
