Binged this yesterday. I think we need another thread with spoilers. Only watching because of Stephen Graham - or Stevie G as I've seen Lennie James call him :) Mark's first cellmate was compelling. www.entertainmentdaily.co.uk/tv/time-viewers-blown-away-by-aneurin-barnard-heres-where-you-recognise-the-welsh-actor-from/ His performance reminded me of the impact Andrew Scott made in Sherlock.

I don't understand how people can be 'sleepless' & 'shocked'
It's a prison drama, prisons are shit, people bully, harass, self harm, this shouldn't be news

Maybe I just live in a very different world Grin

People have been led to believe by the likes of the Daily Mail that prisons are holiday camps
the80sweregreat · 09/06/2021 09:25

It is straying into Ken Loach territory at times , but it is gripping.

the80sweregreat · 09/06/2021 09:46

I started a spoiler thread on telly addicts.
Can't do links.
Come on over if you've seen them all !!

Cocolapew · 09/06/2021 12:02

SG wife was also one of the Dectives in Whitechapel.

I've seen a few documentaries about UK and US prisons that have had violence in them. Eg the Louis theroux one, but with a drama you get drawn in and identify with the characters so it can be more disturbing. I guess people are different and some people are more prone to insomnia than others. Not quite sure why that's hard to understand but there we are.

And yes please, without being rude(!), please do leave us who aare going to take it week by week, to have 7 days to comment on each episode.

PS I think Stephen Graham isn't really an actor at all. He is just always cast to play the same person, so sort of assumed that's because that's what his like. And if he comes out of this alive and in one piece I will be very much surprised as he always plays people who the system tramples over.

Good interview here featuring Ste Graham and Jimmy Mcgovern

I love Ken Loach. He can stray right into his territory , wander around and have a nice little sit down!

I think Loach would have more humour, mind.

This could be a deterrent to keep would be criminals away from crime.

I was thinking that, they should show it in schools!
Sidge · 09/06/2021 22:16

Just finished this. Thought it was really powerful and compelling.

SaltedCaramelIcedLatte · 10/06/2021 11:54

Binged all 3, very gripping!

Mumof31981 · 10/06/2021 22:30

Just watched the 1st episode after a recommendation from a fellow LoD fan...really enjoyed it. Want to watch another but I need my bed as have an early start tomorrow. Stephen Graham is such a good actor and I feel immensely sorry for Mark having been put in a cell with Bernard (his character died in the 1st episode of The Pact too!) Found it really watchable and will binge the rest tomorrow

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/06/2021 06:27

You lot of bingers 😂

It is scary how prison is portrayed but seems accurate from
Those I know who have been inside

I'm the other way - I find violence in fiction to be horrible but endurable because (as me Grannie would have said) "It's only made up , Pet. That's just tomato sauce."

Violence in documentaries/ dramatisations of real crimes etc makes me physically sick.

This could be a deterrent to keep would be criminals away from crime

Doubt it - as a policeman friend said to me "Only honest people are frightened of prison."

Winniewonka · 11/06/2021 18:06

Watched first episode last night and will probably watch the rest tonight. The standard of acting from prison cast is superb. Not just the two main actors. It's hard to believe that guys like the Liverpudlian bully aren't real. In fact I recognised him as an actor from Little Boy Blue and he was equally odious in that drama.
Aneurin Barnard is so versatile too, he must have lost loads of weight for this role. Unrecognizable as Jack from The Pact or as Cilla Black's husband, Bobby .
My only slight grudge was the casting of Sue Johnston as Sean Bean's mother. He's 62 in RL and she is in her 70s.

Kdubs1981 · 11/06/2021 22:38

@AbsolutelyPatsy

its the hairdresser Anthony from Fleabag Grin
Oh my God! I KNEW I knew him from somewhere good! Grin
ZittiEBuoni · 11/06/2021 22:46

Yy WinnieWonka at Aneurin Barnard's versatility. I didn't even recognise him, just thought he looked familiar and was 'doh!' at the credits. He was much thinner than usual, really haunting character too, poor lad.

I agree with the pp who couldn't understand how Sean Bean's character could eat at all. Never mind 'cheese or chicken', I'd have stuck with liquids.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 11/06/2021 22:52

well they pretended sean bean was 56

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/06/2021 13:36

I didn’t recognise him either as jack from pact

Had to google

Housewife2010 · 12/06/2021 13:43

Sean Bean is 15 years younger than Sue Johnstone so only a year off being legally young enough to be her son.

Sojo88 · 12/06/2021 16:48

Re Mark's sandwich - I felt probably unnecessarily pissed off that he never made any effort to keep it! Every time he just put it on his tray and walked slowly past the guy who kept taking it - why not actually hold it or shove it in your jumper or something?! He could totally have tried harder. But yeah, as I say maybe too invested in his sandwich Grin
