I watched and did think this is just going to be grim. Given the cast and writer.
But in fact what made my blood boil, was the bully. That whole big man persona, which unfortunately can be in any neighbourhood in any city, makes everyones lives such utter misery and despair.
And in a prison, why aren't the just isolated. I think we say him committ 2 or 3 acts of violence in front of prison officers.
Or do they just see that as a way of keeping everyone quiet. Better to have one violent thug keeping everyone submissive.
And I did know somehow (on tv?) about prison officers going in with riot gear, but it seems to ramp up year by year. Not only the possibility of a prisoner with a weapon, but also fear of Aids and now Covid. But it seems whoever it is, whether someone having a breakdown or someone threatening violence they go in mob handed.
In fact I got so worked up about this thug, that a didn't really concentrate on the plot.
I think McGovern like Loach has a message he want to get across and is very good at having scenes to pull at the heart strings, but apart from maybe making people actually see others less fortunate than themselves as being human (ie cute little girl jumps into her dad's arms - aaaaaaaaaah!) they never go beyond rehearsing and reflecting that if you somehow aren't part of the system you get shat on.
