@the80sweregreat

Sean has aged well. I think he was married to the actress that was in ' Bread' once. (Might be getting my Sean's mixed up though. ) He played a priest in a Jimmy McGovern thing once with Anna Friel.
Yes.

Melanie Hill.

She was the 2nd Aveline wasn't she?

Nope. Would have held out to watch them when aired, but it's just not something I want to watch on a Sunday night.

Brilliant drama series though.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/06/2021 14:46

I watched and did think this is just going to be grim. Given the cast and writer.

But in fact what made my blood boil, was the bully. That whole big man persona, which unfortunately can be in any neighbourhood in any city, makes everyones lives such utter misery and despair.

And in a prison, why aren't the just isolated. I think we say him committ 2 or 3 acts of violence in front of prison officers.

Or do they just see that as a way of keeping everyone quiet. Better to have one violent thug keeping everyone submissive.

And I did know somehow (on tv?) about prison officers going in with riot gear, but it seems to ramp up year by year. Not only the possibility of a prisoner with a weapon, but also fear of Aids and now Covid. But it seems whoever it is, whether someone having a breakdown or someone threatening violence they go in mob handed.

In fact I got so worked up about this thug, that a didn't really concentrate on the plot.

I think McGovern like Loach has a message he want to get across and is very good at having scenes to pull at the heart strings, but apart from maybe making people actually see others less fortunate than themselves as being human (ie cute little girl jumps into her dad's arms - aaaaaaaaaah!) they never go beyond rehearsing and reflecting that if you somehow aren't part of the system you get shat on.

the80sweregreat · 07/06/2021 15:06

So many writers use the same actors in their dramas.
It becomes a bit of a cult.

Wingedharpy · 07/06/2021 15:47

My theory, based on nothing , is it's just a matter of time before Sean Bean snaps (and farts?!) and I can see him punching bully boy, who'll keel over comatosed then die.

Meanwhile, Stephen Graham will quietly, behind closed doors, do something similar to the prisoner who's attempting to manipulate him, using his son as the lever.

1 of the leading men will end up with a life sentence for murder - and it won't be Stephen Graham.

Moral of the story? - they're not so very different as men (S.B and S.G), but, as stumbledin says, one is part of the system that thrives, and the other is in the "shat on" category.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/06/2021 15:50

Yes I think Sean will snap

But also think guard will to protect his soon

And he will end up in prison

Then both men would have killed someone

It's been an eye opener for me if prison is like that. I didn't realise they'd have that much freedom to mix without supervision and bully and injure each other. I thought they'd either be locked up or supervised.

DavidTheDog · 07/06/2021 16:10

Going to prison has been a secret fear of mine since childhood. I found this almost unbearable to watch, but I love Sean Bean.

Shimmyshimmycocobop · 07/06/2021 16:28

I thought it captured the dehumanising part really well for prisoners and staff alike ( apart from the nun)

I did 3 days induction to be a prison nurse and didn't go back, it was like being in a bad dream tbh.
I remember having to process a group of new YOPs ( youth offenders) and having to ask them if they were suicidal in the middle of a busy office with everyone being able to hear. Some of them looked so young it was heartbreaking, it was definitely not for me.

Oh it’s always been a fear of mine too ever since I was a child. I also found the episode really hard to watch and extremely claustrophobic. Imagine sharing a tiny sell with someone like Barnard’s character Sad I think I’d rather be in complete isolation.

I couldn’t help but also think of all those who are like Bernand (Barnard’s character). Who have been failed in life, suffering from mental illness and self harming in prison. I just felt sadness for him even though he was scary and unpredictable. Why an earth was he placed there when the guards obviously knew he was self harming on regular basis?

Piggywaspushed · 07/06/2021 17:09

I watched a documentary once where the guy said the worst thing about prison was 24/7 lack of privacy and not being able to shut your door when you chose.

DavidTheDog · 07/06/2021 17:24

I think the worse thing for me would be the fear of violence. I'd hope for some kind off respite via education but would probably get that job of cleaning up blood with some bicarb and my hands.

I'd love to see an AMA from a woman who has served time or worked in a prison.

I considered a job teaching in a prison, but they wouldn't consider a part time applicant.

stumbledin · 07/06/2021 17:49

I didn't realise they'd have that much freedom to mix without supervision

I think this is meant to be what happens ie being able to mix (not the bullying) but in some prisons staff shortages, etc., mean that many are in a cell for most of the day.

And during the height of the pandemic it really was lockdown in prisons, very bad consequences. This article shows what should be "normal" and what happened during lockdown. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-55957048

The podcast Prison Bag has a good discussion about the prison system.

MozzchopsThirty · 07/06/2021 18:10

I will watch anything with Stephen Graham in so loved this.
He's such a great actor, fantastic in the Virtues, Save Me & this is England

I work with a prison nurse and he loves it but it's a job perfect for him, I'm not sure it would be for me
I'm trying not to watch the other episodes

longwayoff · 07/06/2021 18:16

Same with me, @DavidTheDog, teaching, not fear of going to prison. I was accepted but didnt take it up. The amount of locking and unlocking of doors on way in and out but, most of all, the smell of the place. A few hundred unwashed male bodies all under one roof. Couldn't do it.

ilovebrie8 · 07/06/2021 18:28

The boiling kettle and sugar was grim! I’m surprised so much freedom to move around and potential for violence against newbies. Seems very scary 😟! Wouldn’t like to work in a prison

mum2jakie · 07/06/2021 18:32

I've agreed to watch the other episodes this week. I don't normally 'binge' TV series but this isn't one that I'd 'look forward' to watching each weekend and I'd rather watch the whole thing close together.

He was the guy with a sex offender history who had the young girlfriend

HildegardNightingale · 07/06/2021 19:52

Have taped this to watch. I volunteered in 2 male prisons, one closed cat c and an open prison .

covetingthepreciousthings · 07/06/2021 21:32

Was it said yet what his son had done to end up in prison? (Don't know anyone's name!)

RockstarMartini · 07/06/2021 21:57

For anyone interested in a real life account of time in prison this is a great read www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07WHMTWLV?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_image&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Really - enjoyed seems the wrong word, but gripped by the first episode of Time. Realised that Steven Graham’s wife also acted with him in This is England, another great watch.
