They knew he must be up to something as they made contact with the prison where the son was and were immediately suspicious that he was apparently being treated so well by the other prisoners.

So this is what has disturbed me about the whole thing is that the punishment for the prisoners isn't the prison hierarchies but being locked up with violent men, who effectively control the other prisoners.

Thats why I thought the focus on the middle class man was wrong. He had some support. But the other men, whose lives have probably already been made impossible by violent men, dont have a chance. They are just left to sink or swim.

Why dont the prison authorities put these men in isolation. Whether the king pin or the man who was just aggressively violent to anyone he thought he could away with intimidating.

Not forgetting that when they are released they probably go back to wives or partners they are also violent to.

Article in today's i newspaper saying that Time was realistic. Written by one of the men who fought off Usman Khan in the Fishmongers Hall terrorist attack in November 2019 inews.co.uk/opinion/bbc-drama-time-took-me-back-being-inside-hope-showed-public-painful-prison-1063902

@purpleme12

It was because when the boss rang the prison his son was in they told him his son was doing really well and being treated really well. So that basically made her think And put two and two together
This

Was obvious to her

We never found out what the son had done, did we?

Nuggetnugget · 23/06/2021 22:52

I'm not sure. The son ruined the lives of his mother and father.

blossomhillx · 24/06/2021 04:50

I think it was mentioned the son was there for something drug related? I'm sure he said to his dad something like "I should know" based on what he was doing for him.

EversoDelighted · 24/06/2021 07:25

Yes, I got the impression it was drug related too.

Papergirl1968 · 24/06/2021 22:13

Ah, drugs, thanks.

JustDanceAddict · 25/06/2021 07:12

@Papergirl1968

Thanks, all. My friend's father was a prison officer, and he said it was realistic. I think it was a deliberately selected to be middle class crime committed by a middle aged professional to connect to the audience and make us feel it could be any one of us or a close friend or relative in Mark's situation. Sean Bean has aged!
Totally agree. I think it’s a ‘warning’ that prison can happen to anyone. I’ve been listening to the A Bit of a Stretch podcast which is by a former inmate featuring different inmates stories around various themes. They include officers too - very interesting.
Blondeshavemorefun · 27/06/2021 07:57

Yes sure son was drugs

Sure he felt bad about his dad

But surely he must have worked out after being beaten up then well treated it wasn’t as he didn’t grass

Tho he did tell his dad to stop

I really Hope there is a s2 with Eric inside

I'm so glad that my dad has just retired, after nearly 40 years in the prison service!

Dave20 · 27/06/2021 21:31

So this is what has disturbed me about the whole thing is that the punishment for the prisoners isn't the prison hierarchies but being locked up with violent men, who effectively control the other prisoners.**

There isn’t the facility to isolate every violation prisoner or bully. There just isn’t enough space.
I thought the drama was quite realistic. Felt sorry for Stephen Graham’s character- he was forced to smuggle stuff in to keep his son safe. Even his boss understood his situation.

Dave20 · 27/06/2021 21:34

I once worked as a Prison officer , albeit for a very short time. The drugs in prison is a real issue and I’m glad it was shown to show the reality of it.

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/06/2021 21:56

I can understand this

The thing that the officer said to Bernard's mum, about most of the prison population having mental health issues, is 100% true. My dad always said this.

So not only has dad now retired from the service, he has also moved home! He couldn't handle seeing ex prisoners everywhere in the (deprived) town where he used to live! Grin
As far as I'm aware, they were always respectful towards him. At least the ones who approached him while I or the grandchildren were with him.

covetingthepreciousthings · 28/06/2021 22:26

Has it been announced whether there will be a second series? At first I thought 3 episodes would be way too short but actually think it was probably the perfect length as they felt like really long heavy hour episodes.

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/06/2021 08:58

Lots of articles like this one when I google

possible s2

But nothing definite

BBC would be silly not to have s2

OP posts:
LadyEloise · 29/06/2021 10:00

Could I really face in to watching Stephen Graham being physically tortured in prison in a second series ?
I'm not sure I could.
Life can be depressing enough.

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/06/2021 15:01

Yes don’t want him hurt

OP posts:
covetingthepreciousthings · 29/06/2021 17:58

If there was a S2 would you want the same characters or a totally different prison? I'm not sure which I'd prefer. The first 3 episodes are great as a complete set, so I'd be happy to have a new prison & new inmates etc. On the other hand Sean Bean and Stephen Graham were brilliant..

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/06/2021 18:10

I think he would have to go to another prison

OP posts:
musicalfrog · 14/07/2021 07:31

I don't understand why they have such easy access to things like kettles and pool balls and such. Why bother having weapons smuggled in when they are right there anyway?? Surely a drinks machine which dishes out not quite boiling water, and a pool table in a locked room accessible only by good behaviour would save a lot of grief?

I know it's realistic though, what a scary place.
