@Pebbledashery

Why do they film officers in riot gear like that?
Because that's how they deal with the naughty prisoners Hmm
thepinkstuff · 06/06/2021 23:18

@HollowTalk

I've just watched this and it's confirmed in my mind that I could never ever ever go to prison.

Does anyone know what would've happened if he'd said he felt suicidal when he was going in?

They would make sure he bunked with someone and kept an hourly watch on him. They could also facilitate a call to the Samaritans
RampantIvy · 06/06/2021 23:21

I thought it was really gripping and tense. I watched it on iPlayer tonight, and struggled with the accents. When will they put subtitles on iPlayer?

I am recording parts 2 and 3 on the PVR and can set subtitles on it for when I watch it.

TheBobJog · 06/06/2021 23:23

Love Sean Bean.

He can't do accents for shit, but as long as he's playing someone Yorksher, I think he is genuinely immense. He can underplay so, so well.

Crinkle77 · 06/06/2021 23:27

@theliverpoolone

The side kick of the young bully guy was that nice lad in Corrie who ended up getting killed by Phelan. He was someone's boyfriend and went missing just before they were about to move away together.....

Thought this was really good, but not exactly cosy Sunday night viewing! Felt tense the whole way through for Sean Bean.

Do you mean Dean Fagan who played Luke Britton?
Celandines · 06/06/2021 23:28

I didn't realise the cell mate was the guy in the Pact until I looked up the cast. I thought Sean beans dad was the actor who played Uncle Desmond in About Time but it wasn't. He looks recognisable

TheUnquestionedAnswer · 06/06/2021 23:31

I found it quite disturbing, and whilst I think it is true to reality, I am hoping it's not. How can things like the kettle incident go on, and why have they got kettles? My first thought when I saw one in Sean's cell was that it would be used in some way as a weapon.

The phone call interrupter is very scary indeed.

augustusglupe · 06/06/2021 23:35

Absolutely brilliant!! Mind you I could watch Stephen Graham in anything.
Yes, Luke from Corrie was the sidekick..he's beefed up hasn't he?! Wink

tadpole39 · 06/06/2021 23:35

I did enjoy it but why do they have windows that break and kettles so they can burn each other?? I was a bit surprised when I saw the pool table, imagine the damage with a pool cue and those heavy balls!!

Celandines · 06/06/2021 23:36

I thought that about kettles. I didn't realise there would be times when the cell doors would be open so they could circulate (and injure each other.) I thought it would be either locked in a cell or supervised in a yard/work area/chapel/classroom etc

ineedaholidaynow · 06/06/2021 23:44

I was amazed they had kettles.

It was quite hard to watch, not gentle Sunday evening viewing.

Fluffmonkey82 · 06/06/2021 23:51

Sean Bean's dad was in the first season of Motherland I am sure..Julia's father-in-law.

Fluffmonkey82 · 06/06/2021 23:51

Sorry just replied to this! Sure he was in Motherland.
copperpotsalot · 06/06/2021 23:56

Anyone else spot Tranter from LOD?

Really enjoyed tonight's. Stephen Graham is my absolute favourite actor

Xmasbaby11 · 07/06/2021 00:01

Loving the cast and acting but finding it a bit grim- probably realistic as there must be a lot of nasty violent men in prison. Appalled at how easily they can hurt one another - the kettles! Shock

Wingedharpy · 07/06/2021 00:15

I suppose from a practical point of view, if they didn't have kettles they would have very limited access to hot drinks.
Waiter/ress service not easily come by in HMP methinks.

Celandines · 07/06/2021 00:47

@Fluffmonkey82

Oh that's where I recognise him from. Thank you
BoysTownGang · 07/06/2021 01:12

Caught this by chance while channel hopping - ooh! I did enjoy it (watching through my fingers during the violent bits😯)
Love a bit of “Mr Bean” and Stephen Graham is very good, saw him in “Little Boy Blue” and was impressed.
Did struggle a bit with the sound and accents but there was a lot of background noise in a lot of the scenes. I am - ahem- reliably informed that it is very true-to-life.... got it on record for next 2 episodes!!

Celandines · 07/06/2021 06:53

I wonder who keeps telling the prisoners which prison the son is in

GrandPrismatic · 07/06/2021 06:55

Oooft watched it right before bed and had nightmares all night! I’m still stressed out this morning...might have to watch the next 2 tonight to get it over with. Not because I don’t like it...I think it is excellent...but because I’m not sure my nerves can cope with stretching it out over 3 weeks

Buggerthebotox · 07/06/2021 07:40

I didn't recognise Aneurin Barnard - didn't last long did he?

This is seriously grim...

2Rebecca · 07/06/2021 07:43

I suspect dramas by people like McGovarn are a reason my idea of Liverpool is so grim. Every programme that has focussed on Liverpool on TV has been about deprivation. Think if I went to prison I'd try and get in to solitary. The other prisoners are grim and I'm amazed there is no one watching at meal time, phone time etc to stop the bullying. Agree giving them individual kettles seems mad. Why not cold water access in cells and hot drinks only when supervised

Celandines · 07/06/2021 07:59

I'd probably rather drink water only than be at risk of sugary boiling water being thrown over me Shock
Do we know the crime of the son yet?

Buggerthebotox · 07/06/2021 08:06

I was going to ask about the crime! Did he say he got 4 years for killing someone or did I imagine it?

ChildOfFriday · 07/06/2021 08:10

4 years for killing someone was Mark (Sean Bean). It sounds like he was drink driving. I think they said that the prison officer's son was doing 3 years, but I don't think his crime has been mentioned yet?
