Anyone watching? Bench Seat Man has gone!

OP posts:
WhenPushComesToShove · 25/05/2021 15:37

I'm sad Robert's gone; I found his teeth quite fascinating! Grin

woodhill · 25/05/2021 16:27

I liked Robert and his chunky beads. Rock on with his bench seating

woodhill · 25/05/2021 16:30

Looks like the front room is still there otherwise there is no where for any privacy

LadyEloise · 25/05/2021 16:32

The mirror clad support beam - a bit of bling Smile
I actually preferred the architect's design rather than what they put in, apart from the closed off front room.
Circa £45,000 over budget.
Not for the faint hearted with the year that's in it. Job losses, reduced earnings etc.

What's in it for the house owners. I presume the architect's are paid by the programme.
Do they get a fee ?
Get things at cost price ?
Or is it all paid for by the production company ?

I'm a little worried Robert is sad - I hope he left rather than was sacked. Which is a bit odd considering I didn't have a good word to say about his designs.

woodhill · 25/05/2021 16:34

Also do they have to obtain planning permission for a double storey extension

Twizbe · 25/05/2021 16:37

I've not watched yet, going to try to catch up later.

I love Laura's style and we always choose her design. Not surprising really as she designed our first renovation lol. She put in a gorgeous light well in our hall and we still love it 10 years on.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 25/05/2021 16:42

Laura's so sensible about storage. I couldn't work out where they were going to put all their stuff in Julian's design. He does have a nice voice though.

ElephantOfRisk · 25/05/2021 16:42

I think they probably did need permission due to the boundary which I guess is why they had to leave a gap. I presume the architects get a fee from the programme budget based on the cost of the build? I'm sure the presenter said something about competing for a £105k commission at one point?

I think the owners will have to pay for the work themselves but maybe get some kind of kickback - some of the furniture or something or just a straight fee and defo the architects/support provided for nothing.

considering everything they did, which looks like new render, windows and doors in the entire house, a high end looking kitchen with a big stove and what looks like completely new furniture throughout, I don't think they overpaid. Essentially though they still have a 3 bed semi albeit nicely kitted out and with an extra bathroom.

woodhill · 25/05/2021 16:52

Yes, barely any kitchen worktops

SlipperTripper · 25/05/2021 16:58

The mirrored pillar divided opinion here... I thought it was a bit 90s nightclub, DH was stalking round the house looking for things that he could glue mirrors to.

Needless to say, my verticals remain mirrorless.

Tuptuptup · 25/05/2021 17:04

Roberts designs did make for much more entertaining viewing! But it was kind of pointless having him as nobody ever chose his designs

ImAncient · 25/05/2021 17:05

Wow!!! Lucky you.

And yes Julian does have an amazing voice. Very silky. Wink

Twizbe · 25/05/2021 17:06

Often the furniture you see is rented for the reveal and isn't actually the homeowners.

The producers stage the properties and it's why you only see a couple of rooms

Twizbe · 25/05/2021 17:07

@ImAncient we were, she was assigned to us through architect your home and it was just as she was starting out. She's since moved so we couldn't use her for our most recent renovation :(

AuntieDolly · 25/05/2021 17:08

I loved the lights over the island too. Is there somewhere you can see where they came from?

ImAncient · 25/05/2021 17:18

Interesting thank you.

I loved these too.

Last year a lady who was behind the scenes project manager did Instagram lives and detailed posts about the show and where they sourced things from.. will try find her Instagram handle again to see if she's still working on the show..

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 25/05/2021 18:41

I didn't like the mirrored pillar. It played havoc with my poor old brain.

catwithflowers · 25/05/2021 19:07

Can I just say that Lindsay, who is in next week's show, came to our house to discuss our re-design and extension last year!!!!! She is lovely. In the end, we decided that we wanted to move (for a bigger garden) but can't find a house we want to move to so an extension and re-design may be on the cards again 🙈😂

Lindsay told us she would be on the show. We have been eagerly awaiting her designs!!!!

SunflowersAndLavender · 25/05/2021 20:15

I loved the layout and the overall design but didn't like the interiors they'd chosen to fit it out with. Everything was a bit too shiny for my taste. That pale gloss floor will be an absolute bugger to keep clean and polished - they will rue the day they chose that, with it going through the whole lower floor. And personally I would not have knocked the front room through to the back either - I think you need at least one room you can shut the door on.

But it's their house and they seem delighted, so I'm delighted for them.

BedknobsNoBroomsticks · 25/05/2021 20:31

In an interview Angela said that Robert had too many work commitments to do the show.

With 4 adults or even just two people in a house separate living spaces is a good idea. What if you want to watch two different things or the kids have lots of friends over. You need somewhere private to go/hide.

catwithflowers · 25/05/2021 20:41

@BedknobsNoBroomsticks I completely agree but I presume the couple thought these things through and decided it wasn't an issue for them. Personally, my husband and I most definitely need our own spaces in the house so that wouldn't work for us, even though there were lots of things I really liked about the winning design 🙂

ElephantOfRisk · 25/05/2021 20:44

They could have just popped some pocket doors on or something so could have the whole ground floor for entertaining when required but also keep a separate room. I guess the lady of the house had her little area on the balcony but everyone else was stuffed! Grin

Absolutely, I would have kept the front room closed off, too open plan

Looking forward to seeing her designs as well.

Two posters on this thread have had two of the architects. Proper royalty Grin
