Crime Drama starring Kate Winslet

9pm Monday 19th April Sky Atlantic

I'm so looking forward to another dark drama.

Kate Winslet was superb, i felt so sorry for her when she went to arrest Dylan, it was breaking her heart, but she did it anyway.
One minor quibble, when the old man found that his gun was gone surely he would have rung the police, especially when he heard later that there had been a shooting, i mean he was an ex cop. Unless he was supposed to be a bit ga ga.

ShallWeStartTheMeeting · 31/05/2021 23:52

Terrific ending.
The only red herring was how violent Dylan was with Erin's friend last episode- it made it look like there was a massive backstory, which then disappeared?
The scene when he went to give money to Lori was quite touching though.

Poor Erin- abused by her dad and her boyfriend, groomed by her dad's cousin .... what a miserable life.

And poor Ryan having to protect his dad's secrets and cover for him. John was a shit wasn't he?
Incidentally I am surprised Lori wasn't arrested as accessory.
She lied and framed an innocent man for murder.

Nospringchickendipper · 01/06/2021 00:06

Fantastic series.I thought Lori was going to be the murder
Lori should have got angry with John not Mare as it was him that destroyed her family.

Pivotthesofa · 01/06/2021 00:10

I enjoyed it but I really didn’t understand why DJ would be placed with Lori. It didn’t seem like she cared for him at all which you can understand but that poor baby :(

That was the only aspect of the whole series that jarred and did not ring true. As I mentioned earlier, in real life, social services would have been involved in DJ's life as soon as his putative father fell under suspicion. No way would he have been placed in a home where a juvenile has killed someone and an adult helped dispose of the body. It just would not happen.
TitsInAbsentia · 01/06/2021 03:23

I'm hoping this is something people will think of when they think of Winslet now...rather than her not shifting her carcass over on that door and letting Jack climb on Grin

agreed

Watched it yesterday - congratulations to all the correct guessers (not me haha)! The episode would have fallen very flat with worse actors I have to say. Many scenes had no exposition and depended on great acting skills.

Agree that DJ being placed in the home of his mother’s murderer essentially seems so unlikely (although it happens all the time when men murder their children’s mother I suppose Sad). There did seem to be some care for DJ when they visited juvie but I dunno, this is going to be miserable for him. Sad poor Lori. Poor Erin. So sad!

Thank you above for clarifying the shed incident I got the impression time passed between the gun theft and return and was ratter confused - seemed such a stupid detail for the series to get wrong!

A sort of happy ending, but not quite. I hope Helen doesn’t get with mr Carroll just to do his housework for him Hmm

Forgive my foggy brain but I've just got some questions:

Did Billy know that Ryan shot Erin, or did he think it was John?

Did Billy also have an affair with Erin or was that all part of the cover up?

When Ryan told his mum that John was having an affair with that woman and he had to move in with his Dad and Billy. Was that all real or part of the cover up?

The baby started off as a redhead with brown eyes and in the last episode he was blonde with blue eyes. Did anyone else notice?

That said, it is the best TV I have seen in years, just amazing. I was just mesmerised by Kate Winslet's acting skills, the raw emotion, the writing. Astounding, it should win every award going.

Bit cheeky sticking Guy Pearce in purely for eye candy though.

whippitwoowoo · 01/06/2021 08:12

Lori should have got angry with John not Mare as it was him that destroyed her family.

I think she was projecting her anger onto Mare because that felt acceptable. Putting in its correct place (John) would be too painful. She was too involved and Mare ruined the plan.

pinkearedcow · 01/06/2021 08:17

I thought that was a great ending, very emotional. I think I might watch it all again from the start. It was so fantastic to have a series where the women are dominant and aren't eye candy or dressed up to the nines all the time. Just normal women, doing their best.

I'd love there to be another series in some ways, but this was so (well almost) perfect I don't think there should be another.

Clawdy · 01/06/2021 08:17

I'm not sure why Billy admitted to the murder. At first I assumed he genuinely believed he had done it, but John said otherwise in the interview.

Squidthing · 01/06/2021 08:27

I feel over invested too, how long would a 12 year old have to serve in prison for a similar crime? It looked like a stupid accident in the heat of the moment so no real intent, but he did take the gun with him. And he was only 12. Awful for everyone really.

@deadringer yes he was made out to be a bit gaga hence the missing pizza cutter etc.
BaconAndAvocado · 01/06/2021 08:51

Watched the last episode last night.

What an emotional roller coaster and the acting was faultless, particularly from the actress playing Dylan's mum.

The scene where she's shouting and crying in the car with KW and then the scene where they reconcile at the end. I was in tears!

Also, the scene with Siobhan and KW where the young girl opens up about finding her brother dead 😰
I'll really miss this series.

Given that the model of the gun was an unusual one, would there not be records to show who it belonged to?

Also a bit sceptical that you would expect to solve a murder with just a couple of detectives. And would you be allowed to do a formal interview with those implicated if you had very close personal relationships with them?

Don’t really care about any of the above though, I loved it.

Totally agree with this re how the female characters were portrayed in a very realistic non-glamorous way.

Anyone know if there'll be another series?

Deadringer · 01/06/2021 09:24

There has to be another series, it would be such a waste of a great cast if not.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 01/06/2021 10:26

I was also wondering that @Squidthing. Maybe released at 18? I'm also way too invested.

YoutubeZoom · 01/06/2021 12:32

I was crying all the way through. I could not name the killer in advance, but could see the end where Mare and Lori have to cean up everyone's mess and muddle on.

You are all right about social services, but Easttown probably represented a town with forgotten people and deep poverty. They had trouble raising $400 for the DJ's surgery, which is not an earth-shatterring amount.

YoutubeZoom · 01/06/2021 12:36

DJ will probably turn out like Ryan in Happy Valley. A child noone wanted and caused his mother's death indirectly. Only Catherine Cawood looked after Ryan, because what can you do. You have to give innocent children a chance.

KatherineJaneway · 01/06/2021 13:31

After the episode I watched there was a 10 minute 'making of' featurette. It was really interesting. Kate had so much input into the character and how she came across and it also covered the accents and clothing. I'd recommend if you liked the series.

On reflection I think Guy Pearce was a character put there to give Mare's character hope for the future. He says that his contract is only for a year when he is leaving for his new role, so there is a possibility of his return.

SenecaFallsRedux · 01/06/2021 13:34

I'm not sure from a legal standpoint what would happen to Ryan. Based on the seriousness of his offense, I doubt he would be released at 18.

SenecaFallsRedux · 01/06/2021 13:38

I think one of the functions of the Guy Pearce character was to emphasize by contrast that the most significant relationships in Mare's life were with women: her mother, her daughter, and Lori. Each of these relationships were troubled to varying degrees and each was reconciled in the series.

SydneyCarton · 01/06/2021 15:28

I am nerdy enough to have looked up the sentencing guidelines in Pennsylvania Grin. I think as a juvenile offender, and assuming third-degree murder or manslaughter since he didn't intend to kill her he might get 10-20 years.

I am still not clear how John manipulated Billy and why Billy either genuinely thought he had killed Erin or was willing to take the blame for John. I don't think he knew it was Ryan as I think John wanted to keep Ryan's name completely out of it.

Also weird about where DJ ended up - Lori has no biological connection to him and her son killed DJ's mother Confused. Kenny is DJ's closest blood relation but probably also not an ideal guardian. That said, John is going to serve some time in prison for concealing a crime but will be released at some stage and want to see his son.
