New thread... really hope the title doesn’t offend anyone! I actually really admire how sensitively the story was handled!

Anyway... Corrie in 1998.

@ScienceSensibility

Barbara Knox’s acting in her farewell scene with Alec was absolutely outstanding. She is phenomenal at portraying the emotions which would be felt by Rita in that situation. What a gem she is.

Mind you, Rita’s collection of glittery, chunky cardigans has to be seen to be believed- I wonder which shops they came from?

Probably some Boutique, s my mum used to wear stuff like that very popular with late middle aged ladies with a bit of money in the 90,s 🤣
WomanStanleyWoman · 18/08/2021 10:42

There were two of those in this little parade of shops near my childhood home. One was called ‘Just Imagine…’ Grin

But yes on Barbara’s performance.

WomanStanleyWoman · 18/08/2021 15:01

Just catching up on yesterday - it’s Manpreet! She’s barely aged!

MotionActivatedDog · 18/08/2021 15:02

Yes I meant to post yesterday! She looks the same.

MotionActivatedDog · 18/08/2021 15:11

Urgh. Les and Janice are just disgusting aren’t they. I never understand why Janice loved him.

eggandonion · 18/08/2021 15:26

Les is vile, but Janice had very shiny hair. I'm kinda hankering after a chunky glitter cardi, but I like a cardi that buttons up to keep my tummy cosy.Smile

WomanStanleyWoman · 18/08/2021 16:41

Talking of Janice’s hair, did anyone else notice she’d managed to have it cut between New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day? Grin

x2boys · 18/08/2021 16:52

No i didnt notice that 🤣
I think the thought of Les, s Libido has disturbed me!

Akire · 18/08/2021 16:56

Didnt it just yuck! So is this end will she kick him out now? Jail bird was hoping she be off on holiday!

MotionActivatedDog · 19/08/2021 15:46

Sharon!!

MotionActivatedDog · 19/08/2021 15:47

Just when we’d gotten rid of her on current Corrie Grin

Akire · 19/08/2021 15:50

Loving Sharon has appeared looking forward to the plot.

Why oh why are twins parents wanting go to pub when they are about two weeks old. What parents do that!!

Audrey does seem obsessed by money. How much life insurance would you get at 65ish? Would you really think husband had £100k in bank but no idea or reality?

eggandonion · 19/08/2021 16:42

Sharon has aged well, she looks exactly the same now.

x2boys · 19/08/2021 17:38

What did we think of Rita, s cardigan today?
I thought it was a bit dull.

MotionActivatedDog · 19/08/2021 17:42

I’d be crying for the pub if I had 2 week old twins Grin

Isn’t Nick in second year of college it being Christmas surely not going cost £2000 last till summer term? His sport BTEC can’t flat that much…don’t both mate you never do sport again!

x2boys · 20/08/2021 16:08

Yeah he will have a few months left, he wanted to be a PE teacher so maybe hes thinking of trying to save some for uni?
But even in the 90,, s £2000,wont last that long.

Akire · 20/08/2021 16:24

Looks like blowing it in holiday. Guys you never buy house for £30k don’t waste on holiday it’s a deposit!!

Is this first Asian character of the time?

WomanStanleyWoman · 20/08/2021 16:36

I do wonder if this is why Nick is portrayed as being into running in modern day Corrie!

Nita wasn’t the first Asian character - that was Flick Khan in 1990 - but the Desais were the first Asian family.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 20/08/2021 21:46

It still beggars belief for me that Corrie didn't introduce a gay male character long before Todd appeared!

I mean, this is Manchester in the late 1990s.

It had the third biggest gay population after London and Brighton!

Every single one of those terraced back streets will have had at least one gay lad living in one of the houses. He might have been closeted and terrified, or out and proud.

Either way, I'm really surprised (and a bit disappointed) that Corrie wasn't brave enough to introduce a gay male character a damned sight sooner than they did. They probably didn't want to 'shock' or 'alienate' their audience.

But, really, as much as I applauded Hayley's storyline, I think it was a case of using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

Thoughts, anyone?

Akire · 20/08/2021 22:00

Hadnt noticed though two main characters with Disabilities and Asian family in soon and Transexual (I think they use for Haley at present) Hard to have representation of all minority groups. Although they more made up for it over last 20years think we had 10 characters a few years back before got rid off gay women.

eggandonion · 20/08/2021 22:01

It originally had a gay writer, didn't it.
I grew up in Ireland, there were a few men who were camp and lived with mammy, and I knew a couple of houses owned by a couple of gents. But it was never mentioned in polite society!
There would have been scope for a similar set up, a closeted gay person, whatever. But I suppose we had Eastenders and Brookside, Coronationstreet followed a less realistic path back then!

Akire · 20/08/2021 22:17

Tell a lie Tracey had one night wonder so she Bisexual and Asha fancied Nina but also had BF. Seems female gay characters not interesting enough to be “just gay”

eggandonion · 21/08/2021 08:41

Sophie was the central gay woman, i suppose.

x2boys · 21/08/2021 10:46

I did read they were planning on introducing a gay character much sooner, like 1960,s/70,s but felt it would be far to controversial
But i get what you mean about using hayleys character as a sledgehammer to crack a nut
