New thread... really hope the title doesn’t offend anyone! I actually really admire how sensitively the story was handled!

Anyway... Corrie in 1998.

I think Sally gets a new job at a car dealership, and has an affair with the owner.

I seem to remember he was called Ian, and was played by Philip Bretherton who I very much fancied at the time!

@WheresThatCatGoneNow I think that's a good few years off yet, when they are trying to get Rosie into private school

ScienceSensibility · 14/08/2021 23:27

@WheresThatCatGoneNow

I definitely preferred it when every storyline wasn't an issue - or something ridiculously dramatic!

I liked Corrie when it was gentle, and nothing much ever happened to anybody.

The scenes were so much longer and slower paced, and the dialogue was fabulous and/or funny and heart-breaking in equal measure.

Do you know what I mean?

This expresses perfectly how I feel about Corrie, and the lost era of ‘gentle’ viewing.... when we didn’t have to explore every possible trauma in a little street with a population of about 50!
eggandonion · 16/08/2021 15:10

Did Sally and Kevin get together for a short while?
Poor Alf.

Akire · 16/08/2021 16:19

Would someone as old as Alf have life insurance? I thought for under Pension age so you could pay off mortgage and lump sum for dependents. Once you have retired they don’t pay out big sums surely as everyone dies. Different thin yes to cover funeral costs. If the house and business have been paid off why the worry?

eggandonion · 16/08/2021 16:44

Poor Audrey's still working now!

thenightsky · 16/08/2021 21:50

I think they did get back together as Kev cheated with Molly, who got pregnant with Jack. At the same time, Sally announced her breast cancer and Kev stayed to support her.

I really like Nick with Leanne - a shame they weren’t ‘allowed’ to stay together throughout - either them or Kev and Sal - it would be realistic to have at least one couple who have gone the distance.

Oh yes.
OnTheBoardwalk · 16/08/2021 23:00

I liked Nick's comment on Corrie the other day how he'd known her before she could vote and how he knew she wasn’t telling the truth or something like that

WomanStanleyWoman · 16/08/2021 23:55

I think of all the characters I’ve ‘rediscovered’ through Classic Corrie, Alec is the one I’ve enjoyed the most. I always liked him, but I think it’s only now I see how valuable he was - and what a good actor Roy Barraclough was. I think if he’d stayed a few years longer he’d be an unquestioned Corrie legend.

Poor Alf Sad It’s strange to think The Street lost two of its ‘elder statesmen’ within a couple of days. I’m confused by the insurance storyline though. Isn’t the crux that Alf died on New Year’s Day, not NYE? Yet I’m sure we saw him dead before midnight.

x2boys · 17/08/2021 10:07

They found him dead on new years day, they probably couldnt say one way or the other wether he died on new years eve or early into new years day, but if his death certificate says new years day im guessing thats where the problem is?
The poignant thing is the actor himself died about six weeks after Alf 😢

WomanStanleyWoman · 17/08/2021 10:39

Yes, that was very sad Sad He hadn’t wanted to be killed off, but at least it meant Alf got a proper ending.

eggandonion · 17/08/2021 11:28

He looked really ill in the final few episodes. Confused

x2boys · 17/08/2021 11:34

He did, and he sounded like he was struggling to breathe when he spoke.

MotionActivatedDog · 17/08/2021 14:54

Oh there is that drippy alison!! I could never stand her. What did Kevin ever see in her?

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 17/08/2021 15:14

x2boys! GrinGrin

I like your sense of humour too!

Kev ❤ forever.

MotionActivatedDog · 17/08/2021 15:22

I see I’m late to the part with the drippy alison hate! Grin

MotionActivatedDog · 17/08/2021 15:22

*party

eggandonion · 17/08/2021 17:23

Oh poor Alison, she was just an ordinary wee girl. Kevin liked that she wasn't all feisty like Sally or glam like Natalie, she just simpered at him and he liked that. I think he used her and forgot about her.
Poor, poor Alison.

WomanStanleyWoman · 17/08/2021 21:26

Does anyone else remember Margi ‘Jackie Dobbs’ Clarke presenting The Good Sex Guide? The theme tune was ‘Anything Goes’, but instead of singing it she used to recite it like a poem in a super-strong Scouse accent Grin

ScienceSensibility · 18/08/2021 00:29

Barbara Knox’s acting in her farewell scene with Alec was absolutely outstanding. She is phenomenal at portraying the emotions which would be felt by Rita in that situation. What a gem she is.

Mind you, Rita’s collection of glittery, chunky cardigans has to be seen to be believed- I wonder which shops they came from?

Manzanilla55 · 18/08/2021 09:01

Didnt Alf die in real life shortly after leaving the series for retirement?
