New thread... really hope the title doesn’t offend anyone! I actually really admire how sensitively the story was handled!

Anyway... Corrie in 1998.

I'd forgotten Des died. Wasn't expecting that

WomanStanleyWoman · 27/07/2021 17:51

@Akire

I knew Des was a gonna when she held his hand and said whole life ahead of him. Still pretty awful. Remind me why Spiders GF who works in pub should be so upset that Des was taken to hospital?
She’s Natalie’s niece Smile

Me too. Completely forgotten. Sad
Akire · 27/07/2021 18:21

Thanks niece makes sense!

Tenementfunster · 27/07/2021 18:35

I thought Des and Natalie bought the Rovers and ran it together! Too much booze back in the nineties must’ve curdled my brain.

WomanStanleyWoman · 28/07/2021 00:54

I wonder if you’re confusing Des with Vinny? He arrives in about a year’s time and becomes a barman at the Rovers, and later Natalie’s boyfriend. He’s quite a similar character to Des.

SophieB100 · 30/07/2021 16:45

Denise Welch has played her part as grieving widow really well, the actress was going through a lot of issues at the time, but found her acting recently very touching.
It's funny watching it again all these years later, some of it I vaguely remember, other bits - nothing. I remembered about Des, but not about the cult Zoe stuff, or Nick being a model!

MaudGrimesRIP · 30/07/2021 17:24

SophieB100. I'm a little out of touch since the summer as I am not in UK so, can only watch Classic Corrie in real time. I loved the two episodes each day on +1 during the winter, dark @ 4pm & cosy ! Denise Welch's portrayal of Natalie was a revelation compared to what I recall from 97/98. I only remberered her as a cold hearted home wrecker with no empathy. However, what I saw of her a few months back during her break up with Kevin, dealing with Samantha & relationship with Des was completely different. She is a brilliant if flawed character and Denise's acting was top class. Like I said, I haven't seen the latest episodes involving the passing of Des but, Denise is a much finer actress than I previously gave her credit for.

SophieB100 · 30/07/2021 17:40

I agree totally @MaudGrimesRIP
She did the full crying/screaming/looking a mess woman in hell thing very convincingly. Made a refreshing change to see reality portrayed - her grief was palpable.

thenightsky · 30/07/2021 18:47

Aye, they certainly had better actors on board back then.

Tiaandchewy79 · 30/07/2021 20:31

Did anyone spot bad boy Cain from Emmerdale play the darrrling theatre guy auditioning Roy for Pirates of Penzance? Hilarious!

OMG! I thought I knew that face.
SwankyPants · 30/07/2021 21:54

Me too!

bunnybuggs · 31/07/2021 14:48

Vinnie Sorrel - not Pat Phelan's sidekick who was a bad 'un. Grin

WomanStanleyWoman · 02/08/2021 14:10

Does anyone else think it’s weird that they went to the bother of casting Des’s parents, and bringing back Colin, for the funeral, but didn’t bring any of them in for the wedding only a few weeks earlier?

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 02/08/2021 14:27

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that Ben from the Nirab Foundation looks very similar to Roy in the café?

It's the mouth and teeth!

I actually Googled David Neilson to make sure he wasn't his real-life son!

Denise Welch is a very fine actress, in my opinion. Natalie is 100% believable. I really like the character, and care what's going to happen to her!

Unlike that drippy niece of hers, Lorraine. Who is beyond annoying - and has terrible dress sense!

I'm sorry, but the Lorraine actress isn't convincing at all, and I bet she only got the job because she has a faint resemblance to Denise Welch (in her younger days)

Yes, it was quite bizarre seeing Cain Dingle camping it up as a theatrical luvvie! He was pretty lovely back then, but is so much hotter nowadays!

x2boys · 02/08/2021 14:44

I think lorraine dressed as a typical student back in the 90,s, i remember wearing long floaty mismatched clothes with my Docs, but yes she, s not a great actress
And yes Cain😍

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 02/08/2021 14:49

The scene where Natalie went out and sat in Des's car was beautifully done and heart-breaking.

Her grief was palpable. She just wanted to feel close to him, and the small detail that she chose to sit in the passenger seat spoke absolute volumes to me.

She's such a self-assured woman - always appearing like she's in control of every situation - that to leave Des's seat empty, when probably she would usually prefer to be the driver, just absolutely magnified the immense loss and hopelessness she was feeling.

It was symbolic of how much she was aching for Des to come and sit beside her - to take control of everything and look after her.

Whoever devised that scene truly understands grief.

Iwantacampervan · 02/08/2021 15:07

Welcome to the Street Tyrone!

Annamariefl · 02/08/2021 15:18

Agree with all the comments about Denise Welch’s acting; she is very convincing.
Joanne Froggatt is also quality.
Ben reminds me of Chris Packham both vocally and facially.

Tiaandchewy79 · 02/08/2021 15:36

Ty with the 1990s version of ‘ being glued to the iPhone’ !
Am loving all the characters and stories; streets ahead of the current Corrie!

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 02/08/2021 18:36

Yes! I know it's not real!

But Denise Welch was bloody good last week, you all must admit.

I'm just steeling myself to endure Margi Clarke's voice for however long she's staying!

She'll be getting repeat fees now, won't she?

And Tyrone will be getting paid twice over, because he's still there!

Mad isn't it?

x2boys · 02/08/2021 18:45

So are, kev, sally etc 🤣
Yes Denise welch was good, but i like her character more the second time around i like the fact she doesnt take any shit

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 02/08/2021 19:46

Yes, x2boys, that's exactly what I like about her aswell.

And she's always so good to look at! Do you know what I mean?

Glowing skin, fabulous shiny hair, perfectly styled clothes! Eyelashes to die for! Who wouldn't enjoy looking at her?

I'm a gay man, and even I enjoy looking at her! Because she always looks so polished and glowing.

Although I enjoy looking at Kevin and the very impressive bulge in his jeans just a little bit more!

But that's just me - you can't please everybody all the time, can you?

thenightsky · 02/08/2021 19:50

I never understood the love for Margie Clarke. She always seems to be over-acting massively.
