I think if the cases were interesting enough then it could carry on without NW.

I tend to watch these for the "whodunnit", not the character's home lives so much.

I always liked Morse, but thought that Lewis worked well.

CongealedCrags · 30/03/2021 07:39

I think I would have preferred all the plot holes - Sheila Hancock, the freezer, what Fogerty did on the night - all of them to be answered and Cass to have retired to Cornwall with the Laird. It just felt that the death and the social distancing meant S6 was an outlier and nothing actually got solved.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 30/03/2021 07:41

Oh - and the above form only the tip of the iceberg regarding Things I Want To Know . . .

SophieB100 · 30/03/2021 07:53

I liked The Split - daft, but I liked it.
Best thing for me that NW was in was Last Tango in Halifax. All series on I Player - brilliant as the flawed Gillian.
I think if they make another series it will be ok, because the scripts are good and cast are great, but it won't be the same at all.

SophieB100 · 30/03/2021 07:55

@Chicchicchicchiclana

Neil Morrissey?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 30/03/2021 07:59

That's the one, Sophie

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 30/03/2021 08:05

Poor Cassie and her family :-(. Well done to those who suspected Dean. It just didn't feel to me as good a tie-up ending as in previous seasons but possibly because the death of Cassie 'swerved the focus'?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 30/03/2021 08:06

Why did the housekeeper have a cheque for 10k? I think I missed something. Wasn't that an indication that Liz had started to live her life differently (as she vowed in the scene with her boss)?

longwayoff · 30/03/2021 08:07

Cant bear The Split but I expect NW welcomes it for the chance to stop scowling and wear some decent clothes for a change. Sad ending but I think Sunni could carry on a new series, he's been written a decent character and he plays it well.

diddl · 30/03/2021 08:27

I also wondered why Liz seemed so short of money-unless she was just mean & paid out as little as she could?

Didn't feel sorry for any of them really except for Dean.

Ram bleating on about race to the last.

Presumably if the others thought it was him it was because he'd previously been beaten up by Walsh, not because of his race!

Fiona was horrible-just as self serving as the others-can't believe her partner wanted to stay with her!

PursuingProxemicExactitude · 30/03/2021 08:36

SchadenfreudePersonified As I understood it, Liz didn't live with her mother; she lived with her fiancée, but visited her mother regularly. Eugenia, the carer/housekeeper did the bulk of looking after Evil Eileen.

Halsall · 30/03/2021 08:38

Everything that Schaden said.

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/03/2021 09:29

I think they can do a s5 without Cassie

Wonder why she wanted to leave

It’s a popular series

She could have done as I said and retired and done on sideline

Why did they keep the body for 30yrs

Why was Liz so mean to her mums carer

If you think about it, to cover a copper's hours - even an Assistant Chief Constable - a carer for Liz's mother would have to have been doing around 10 hours a day, so the cost would be pushing £2K a month. If someone was there overnight, that would at least double. So you can see that, with a wedding coming up and her own home to maintain it would have put financial strain on Liz.

The bigger question is that, with a child at home, it seems pretty unlikely on the face of it that Eugenia was the only carer.

Yes, I agree. Would have been a much more satisfying ending to have had at least one more episode, tie things up, and have a little glimpse of Cassie beaming with happiness in her new home. It would have also opened up the possibility of another series in some way in the future. I feel annoyed that they killed her, such a sad end to the whole thing, in this bleakest of times.
SirVixofVixHall · 30/03/2021 09:33

I don’t think the carer was there overnight ? It seemed she just came in the day to manage meals etc? Liz lived elsewhere with her partner.

CallmeHendricks · 30/03/2021 09:55

Was it ever made clear just what the "secret" was that Sheila Hancock knew about Liz from her late husband? Are we all just assuming it was about the murder, or could it have been the nasty old trout taking digs about her being gay?

JSL52 · 30/03/2021 10:02

@CallmeHendricks

They had to kill her off really, though, didn't they? She was only doing this last case to ride out the last month or two until her retirement, so she wouldn't have been around for a new case anyway?
Or she could have just moved to the seaside and retired happily ?
diddl · 30/03/2021 10:06

I don't think that they had to kill her off.
What was it she said to her dad?

Just 10 more weeks?

I mean how long does a case take to solve??

Easily the 12 wks that she initially had I would have thought!

greeneyedlulu · 30/03/2021 10:11

I cried at that ending!! Poor Cassie!

That's why I thought Liz lived there.

But I think if Liz's Horrible Mum had that huge house, she must have had some cash, surely? Or could have done an equity release to cover at least some of her care?

Or she could have just moved to the seaside and retired happily ?

Perhaps in a lodge in the garden . . . Grin

mamawithfive · 30/03/2021 10:47

Have read that it will be back for series 5!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 30/03/2021 10:49

Another series?

BRILLIANT!!!

MoonCatcher · 30/03/2021 10:59

Was it just coincidence that Ram owned a Cigne pen just like the one that killed Marsh?
