I haven't cried like that since Ruth died in Spooks 😭

What can I watch now? I am a huge fan of Waking The Dead and this reminded me a lot of that.

Thefaceofboe · 30/03/2021 11:23

For anyone watching something new to watch, I enjoyed ‘The Bay’

Thefaceofboe · 30/03/2021 11:33

Think I sat like this Shock for about two weeks. Even amidst the general Spooks carnage that was outstandingly affecting. NW really knows how to make her characters beloved.

lightofthetrees · 30/03/2021 11:47

Why oh why. I'm not meant to feel sad at the end of TV. Far too bleak. Loved Cassie

Pyewackect · 30/03/2021 12:10

I guess Nicola Walker felt she had taken it as far as she could and it was starting to repeat it's self.

The last scene was poignant, in view of the loss suffered by so many over the past 12 months.

SingToTheSky · 30/03/2021 12:23

I had a wave of sadness when I woke up this morning 😳😭

sleepyhead · 30/03/2021 12:27

@SchadenfreudePersonified

Why did the housekeeper have a cheque for 10k? I think I missed something.

What I want to know re: Liz is:

a) Why bring in a big gun like Sheila Hancock, and then just have her fire a spud pellet (a finely-crafted spud-pellet, but a spud-pellet)?

b) The vitriol between Liz and her Horrible Mum seems to have well pre-dated "head-in-the-fridge" man, so why did her Horrible Mum have such a hold over her, and why did she not play her "I know what you did" card sooner? What was her hold over Liz?

c) Liz was a top copper with a top copper's top wage - how was she unable to pay Eugenia a decent whack for looking after Horrible Mum? She couldn't have been that short of cash?

d) In fact, why did she even continue to share a house with Horrible Mum, when she could have either had the evil old bat put int a home, or just moved out and paid the carer as she was doing?

I also wanted to know why Ram's family - esp.his father - wouldn't speak to him. Was it because he married out of his faith (though I have met a number of Sikhs who have done this, and it hasn't seemed to cause problems)? Was it because he never saw his grandchildren from Ram's first marriage? Was it because he had dementia - was this why Ram was worried about a DS child? Maybe he thought he couldn't cope with both. Or was it just because he turned his back on Fabric and embraced the Power of the Force? Why did he get involved with drug-smuggling?

Fiona was a self-serving dipstick. I hope she goes down for a million years.

Nooo! Not lovely Dean! He was so wonderful with his children, so loving to his wife - I loved Dean! But why did he get/remain involved with drugs? I can totally understand why emotions overcame him and he stabbed Nasty Matthew, but in every other respect he was trying to distance himself from the seedy criminal underworld he was born into.
When he described the world of violence and abuse he'd been steeped in from birth I cried for him. All I could see was a poor, frightened child, listening to his drunken father beating up his mother, being terrified of being beaten himself, hating every minute of his life and wanting to be out of that atmosphere of abuse - and then, of course, the only brother who felt the same was brutally murdered. Of course he snapped. Poor Dean. (Excellent acting from Andy Nyman - what a strong, moving, believable performance - aced it!)

I wonder if the PP who suggested that the scripts had to be changed to accommodate NW's wanting to leave (or even because of her workload) is right?

I hope it continues with Sunny - it's such an intelligent series.

I think Sheila Hancock was mostly there because a) If you could get her why wouldn't you? b) it was all part of showing Liz as a person outside of potentially dodgy copper: carrying this secret on top of dazzling career of service and waiting hand and foot on malevolent mother, but not perfect - not recognising the value of the carer and that although she felt she was carrying the weight of the world, other people have their troubles.

Ram's character was carrying around a load of red herrings - obviously a bad 'un, but also clearly a regular victim of racial abuse and discrimination which had made him extremely bitter. Maybe his dad knew about some of the dodgy deals and that's why he was ashamed of him? We were meant to think (?want as he was the least sympathetic) he did it, but he was also a rounded character with lots of good points - clearly really good at his job, supporting his partner until it all went wrong.

Dean, well if you're brought up in that environment I can see why you'd struggle to let it go and when you ran into problems financially would revert back to what you knew to get hold of money fast. Inject cash into your business to set yourself up for a straight life? Drug deal. Have a disabled child who urgently needs financial support? Drug deal. Always thinking it'll be the last time.

I love how Unforgotten makes you care about everyone in the story - it's never black and white, but they're still excellent at putting the victim at the centre, even when the perpetrators are still victims themselves. I hope it continues with Sunny.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 30/03/2021 12:34

They literally said that in Sunny's speech about Cassie didn't they? That she cared about 'people who'd gone down the wrong path' too.

I am glad she died rather than retired. It would have been a rubbish cop out for her to recover and retire. This was much more fitting.

I think COVID must have ruined some of their storyline a bit. I bet Sheila H was going to feature more but then was shielding.
It also made Cassie's relationship with the laird look like it had gone wrong when it was dramatically supposed to have.

Gonegrey31 · 30/03/2021 12:37

The producers have apparently confirmed this morning that a new series 5 has been commissioned.

MatildaMainly · 30/03/2021 12:42

@Gonegrey31 I read that too. Series 5 with 'a new partner in crime' for Sunny.

GoLightlyontheEarth · 30/03/2021 12:42

I would really like to know why Nicola Walker wanted out.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 30/03/2021 12:42

I'll definitely still watch S5 with Sunny leading it up. I think it could be really interesting.

GoLightlyontheEarth · 30/03/2021 12:47

Apparently the accident happened because Cassie was checking her phone to see if her father had replied to her message. I didn’t pick that up at the time.

EachandEveryone · 30/03/2021 12:53

Oh yes I thought that straight away

ImAncient · 30/03/2021 12:54

Excellent! Another series. Very pleased!

MatildaMainly · 30/03/2021 13:04

There's nothing to say that Sunny's going to be promoted, or if he's going to get a new boss. We'll have to be patient.

Unfortunately despite the big impact from Cassie's personal story, I felt really let down by that episode. It was rushed and ill considered. It's like some novels where I'm gripped but then get the feeling the author knew they were reaching their target word count and so they just bash out an unsatisfactory ending to box it off and it all peters out.

Even allowing for a rewrite of the first draft all we got was the four suspects charged with something, Geoff to stand by Fiona, Jerome and Uncle Clive reunited, Anna to keep the baby and life to get easier for Eugenia and her daughter due to Liz's £10,000 cheque. That leaves so many red herrings and loose ends. It really disappointed me.

diddl · 30/03/2021 13:04

I'll watch another series!

Love Sunni & the others & it's the intersting cases that make it for me.

TeachesOfPeaches · 30/03/2021 13:10

Omg I'm in tears

Notanotherhun · 30/03/2021 13:17

@diddl

Agree. I was getting bored of Cassie's personal life. I want to watch characters and their stories, not drivel about wills.
MSQuinn · 30/03/2021 13:19

Crushed. I love NW. Seems like she wanted out. I’d still watch a new series though. Very sad end though for a great character. I’m not sure what I’d have preferred, her dying or just leaving.

Husband said it wasnt her choice but directors 😔

Said new series planned for next year

Sunny is a fully written character in his own right. He could easily carry the series.
Chicchicchicchiclana · 30/03/2021 13:33

I can't see the reason for having to kill her off. We all knew this case was going to be her last and she was only doing it for her pension. It feels a bit unnecessarily maudlin and over-dramatic to me.

And as it it took up most of the episode, as nearly everyone else has said, the storylines of all the other characters didn't get properly tied up.

SirVixofVixHall · 30/03/2021 13:36

I love Sunni as a character, he is so well acted. Delighted there will be another series but I am still sad that they killed off Cassie. Even more so if NW wanted to carry on !!
If she wanted to leave they could have left it more open ended to allow for her to possibly return in some way.
