Know nothing about this but have found some C5 original dramas quite good!

For anyone who like me is still trying to find something actually worth watching.

CriticalWoman I’ve fanwanked that into an assumption that Jason went to university in Manchester, picked up the accent there and it stuck.

The lengths I’ll go to in order to add some semblance of narrative logic... Grin

I’m trying to work out why Jodie needed a fake dbs to start with. Did she use another name to apply for job?

Maybe she had been arrested for harassing people thinking their child was Tom.
OnlyTheLangoftheTitBerg · 04/02/2021 08:52

Peggy I’m assuming there’s something in her past that would disbar her that we don’t know about yet. Maybe she went off the rails after Tom’s death (“death”?) and committed a crime or something - although if it was that you’d assume there’d be more veiled allusions to it from her family, especially when they were discussing her likely sentence. I’m fully expecting it to be an unexplained plothole!

MythSpentYouth · 04/02/2021 08:59

The school staff call her miss Walsh, she introduced herself to the kids as Jodie... but had her driving licence in a different name. Presumably the press reports that DanTom found were in her married name.

I guess she wanted the DBS papers immediately so she could get straight into the school , OR she has a record.

Aha! She accepted a conviction for something Jason did in order not to ruin his career as a barrister.

Criminal background of Dad would explain why he locked her in a half built house rather than go to the police when he found out what she was doing.

the80sweregreat · 04/02/2021 09:04

I'm still giggling at the way Tom picked up those shears to start to pruning back those bushes!
' he has to be my son , his so good at gardening'
Some of your theories are very good and with any luck tonight we'll find out why having a picnic by a huge lake with a four year old is a very bad idea. Also , never return to get your passport forged by the same people who messed up your CBS certificate or your car washed by them as they probably use old cloths which scratch up your paintwork and ' we buy any car' will knock for a few hundred on the price.

the80sweregreat · 04/02/2021 09:06

Knock off a few hundred rather!

GetOffYourHighHorse · 04/02/2021 09:27

'It intimated yesterday that Tom was running about in the woods when the family thought he had drowned'

Yes and Rupert PJs wife found him but then they just inexplicably decided to keep him as he looked a bit like her. Why also come forward as witnesses though..

I can't believe I'm still watching this. However they have managed to incorporate some tension to make it watchable, but so many questions. Why were the crims so bad at forgeries, why did TomDan start pruning, why does Jason, Jodie and their mother all have totally different accents. What was the detective in recently, he looks familiar.

The ex and Jason seem in cahoots hence his presence at family dos which is weird, no one wants an ex at a family buffet.

I can't wait to see what the writers pull out of the bag to explain it all.

AtlasPine · 04/02/2021 09:31

I can’t stop being annoyed at every single bit of how she handled this. If she’d just sent the tissue with the blood she dabbled from him for DNA and been patient for a little longer (who knew dna results were with you 24 hrs after the sample hit the post box at the end of the road), she could have had her boy without facing ten years in jail.

the80sweregreat · 04/02/2021 09:35

She seemed pretty certain the DNA would come back so soon! The way Royal Mail is lately I wouldn't bet on it at all!

Graciebobcat · 04/02/2021 09:35

I did laugh at the 25 year old Saab being worth £2000. You couldn't give it away for scrap. We sold our ten year old Renault estate a few years ago for £500, We Buy Any Car offered £150. It was in really good condition and running order, full service history and had an updated stereo in it.

Yes, was a bit surprised when I saw Tim Dynevor aka Mr Sally From Corrie was the writer (Sally and Tim in real life - what are the chances? Grin), but then figured that maybe she brings her work home with her and some of the gaping plot holes and ludicrous story lines must have rubbed off... HmmGrin

FoxInSocks2 · 04/02/2021 09:44

I was thinking maybe they moved so close to where Tom's mum lived by a mistake. It's a massive stretch of course but if they were having a picnic at a local beauty spot it wouldn't have been obvious where they lived.

EggysMom · 04/02/2021 09:47

Perhaps the lake sequence/memory is false - a dream, a shower scene (for the older members), perhaps even remembered from when the mum herself was a child and actually happened to her brother ... Or perhaps Tom drowned in the bath (due to her scattiness) and the lake is a false memory her head concocted to help her in grief ..,,

I suspect a huge implausible twist tonight. Something that makes us go "Well how were we meant to know/foresee that"

MythSpentYouth · 04/02/2021 09:55

Maybe her coat is made from the picnic blanket!

the80sweregreat · 04/02/2021 10:03

😀 Very retro!
AtlasPine · 04/02/2021 10:05

Maybe the wife who was meant to have died when Tom was 4 (ie when he was snatched) couldn’t live with keeping someone’s stolen child so her husband killed her. He is definitely a bit mad and has done illegal stuff or why lock her in the house menacingly. But he doesn’t seem very fond of his son even though he’s over protective.

Also when Tom went missing, surely his mum’s face would have been all over the media so the fake dad should have recognised her. It’s like she was Clark Kent or something.

AtlasPine · 04/02/2021 10:06

I know the ending will be utterly infuriating.

diddl · 04/02/2021 10:11

It's not Jodie's son & somehow he was involved in his Mum's death.

friendlycat · 04/02/2021 10:35

It’s completely implausible and ridiculous, but I’m looking forward to the last part tonight.
Last night I watched it at 9pm then had to switch straight onto ITV+1 for The Bay. Right at the start I was getting a bit muddled between the two as still had my mind fixated on The Drowning. But both series do have a water connotation!

Ginfordinner · 04/02/2021 10:41

I think I am more over invested in this thread than the actual TV drama. I love all the other opinions on where the story will end up Smile

theliverpoolone · 04/02/2021 10:46

Seeing as the writer obviously had no idea how DBS certificates are actually applied for, my guess is that her 'needing' a fake one has no relevance whatsoever, other than to connect her to the people making fake ID Grin

JazzyGeoff · 04/02/2021 10:49

This series (and this thread) has been a right tonic!

I keep thinking of the gardener smashing things up because of the crappy forge job on the passport and guffawing Grin

Wearethetwirl · 04/02/2021 10:55

My tuppence: brother swapped DNA results to protect himself. Tom died under her family's care and mum/brother/dad hid body as thought they would be done for negligence. Jodies dad killed himself out of guilt.

Mark (Daniels dad) is implicated in fraud etc so hired criminal lawyer but has nothing to do with child kidnap. Boy is his real son.

the80sweregreat · 04/02/2021 10:56

Trouble is , I'm now just getting into season three of Marcella after not being bothered about 1 or 2 before now. ( Amanda Burton is chilling in that)
So like the poster below , I'm starting to get my cop / mystery dramas all muddled up (which at my age isn't hard. ) Plus I read a lot of books with similar themes as well.
Which then had me thinking that nearly all of these dramas or books involve the police! Can anyone think of one that's been on that doesn't? The real police must roll their eyes.
