Know nothing about this but have found some C5 original dramas quite good!

For anyone who like me is still trying to find something actually worth watching.

This is so bad I just can't look away. I have to know how they are going to explain all this.

The most implausible thing of all is that the boy is clearly of a different ethnicity to any of the purported parents, so if Jill IS the mother who is the father?

Or (and I'm rather proud of this) Jill is not the mother at all, the real mother is her long lost identical twin sister - hence the DNA match!

BitOfFun · 04/02/2021 00:26

I'm on tonight's episode now, and I've just got to the Miss BadShirt in the Drawing Room with the lead piping 😂

BitOfFun · 04/02/2021 00:29

And I also love how the baddies guard their lair with picketers from the Timex strike Grin.

Fluffmonkey82 · 04/02/2021 00:39

Was just going to say is the writer something to do with Sally from Corrie??

BitOfFun · 04/02/2021 00:50

Ah yes, I think my mum said something about Sally and this. Who knew?

As an aside, I've seen worse beds at Premier Inns than the one in Jodie's jail accommodation.

Applesandpears23 · 04/02/2021 01:34

Thanks to whoever recommended Torn. I have binge watched it and it so much better. Really gripping!

BitOfFun · 04/02/2021 02:11

I've just loaded it up on YouTube, and OMG 1) Bradley Walsh is in it; and 2) WTF is it with David Morrissey's terrible wig?!

BitOfFun · 04/02/2021 02:13

Apologies! Adam Kotz, not David Morrissey.

clpsmum · 04/02/2021 02:27

@Knittingnanny was it deep end of the ocean? I've read that and have a feeling this is going to be a bit of a rip off of it tbh

JemimaTab · 04/02/2021 02:49

It’s ludicrous. None of it makes sense. QC brother is just not plausible. Why would the kid just believe her and want to leave his dad (esp when she comes across as predatory/stalker). Why would she leave her big fancy expensive house when that appears to be the only asset of value she has. Why have they set up the school secretary/admin person as a bitchy jealous type character when she is actually right to have concerns. Why would Josie go back to the people who forged her DBS papers to get a fake passport, when the fake DBD papers were rumbled easily so were obviously not a good job.
And whoever did wardrobe on this show needs sacking. That tartan number with the tassels is particularly bad - it looks like a dressing gown or dog blanket.

JaimeLeeCurtains · 04/02/2021 03:21

Ben the dad can't have been involved in his son's disappearance or surely he'd have tipped off Mark Tenner straight away when Jodie first said 'I've seen Tom'. And/or his wife would have done, the minute she had a sniff of it.

But nobody from that family - or the police - warned Mark Tanner, and he was seemingly left to work it out for himself.

But I have a feeling this isn't going to wrap up as a consistent narrative ...

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 04/02/2021 03:52

Hang on tight, folks, it's another ever so likely plot twist:
DanTom's late 'mother' was fathered by Jodie's late Dad.
(A bearing on DNA?)

Thus she was secret half-sister to Jason & Jodie.
(Perhaps making it fractionally easier for the abductors to justify their twisted actions to themselves?)

Rather hard wife's attentions (hopefully not including anything darker, which would be grim) were all focussed on Golden Child Jason and his high-flying school/career achievements. Resentment towards her, jealousy towards him, made him look elsewhere.

And neglect Jodie just as much as her mother did.

So fairly toxic set-up already.

Theories:

  1. Favoured daughter & architect husband: desperate for child yet unsuccessful (his fertility issues? Her cancer treatment? Limited time left?)

Dad and husband prepared to go to extreme and terrible lengths to solve that for her.

  1. Soon-to-be-Ex-best friend determined to steal Ben permanently/ start family together. Figures vulnerable Jodie will crumble after such a trauma, thus speeding up potential.

Jodie convenient scapegoat pawn for all.

Jodie's Dad, the secretly-shagging-your-husband 'friend', and half-sister/architect husband all collude on planning DanTom's abduction.

Jodie's late father pivotal to everything.

Does the title 'The Drowning' allude as much to his method of death (in bath) as DanTom's supposed one.

Was that really accidental? Or suicide after undergoing years of guilt, failure at achieving happy family, and repressed grief over favoured daughter's death?

Hmm...
But how does Jason fit in? ( "you owe it to Jodie..." ). Definitely covering up something major.

@BitOfFun

And I also love how the baddies guard their lair with picketers from the Timex strike Grin.
My aunty was on the Timex picket line. In fact I think she was a shop steward. Two weeks ago I was watching a documentary on the strike whilst 1000’s of miles away from Dundee and my aunty suddenly popped up on my tv screen hurling abuse at people who weren’t striking.

It was a shock 😁

Wearethetwirl · 04/02/2021 05:45

Mark Tanner took Jodie to a secluded house and then said, the house was locked.....I can think of worse ways to spend a morning!

Sorry decade long crush on Mr Penry-Jones! Grin

Wearethetwirl · 04/02/2021 05:51

The writer Tim Dyenevor is a veteran Emmerdale writer. He is married to Sally from Coronation Street and father of Phoebe Dyenevor, female lead on Bridgerton.

Skipsurvey · 04/02/2021 06:33

i just watched the first episode and wondered why she was leavingn the house in her dressing gown.

PinkyParrot · 04/02/2021 06:35

The boys black curly hair just looks unlikely to me - his Mum has thin, lank brown hair.

Bahhhhhumbug · 04/02/2021 06:37

I reckon the boy is her sibling maybe her dad was a naughty boy and the eye scar is a red herring or maybe the exhs new wife got rid of the boy/arranged for him be kidnapped so her now DH would leave his wife as the boy was reason he wouldn't leave.

Frenchdressing · 04/02/2021 06:46

What a load of rubbish it is!

The woman school teacher is a terrible actor. Hilarious. The way her dodgy DBS was forgotten about so she could help the school with the recording kudos. The laughable gangsters. Her coat!

Why is the gardener so mad that he’s smashed up the gangster flat?

I can’t look away though! There is some spectacularly bad acting in this too,

EggysMom · 04/02/2021 06:52

If it wasn't for the DNA results, I'd wonder if the kid was hers in the first place - like babies swapped at birth,or maybe she stold baby.

Mark knows he's not the father, hence needing a criminal lawyer. Covered for late wife?

How is her late father involved, I'm with boy's dead mum being his daughter

longwayoff · 04/02/2021 06:55

Ohhhh. So disappointing. Is rubbish. Again.

CriticalWoman · 04/02/2021 07:45

@Wearywithteens

A QC? With a manc accent called ‘Jason’? Fuck me this programme is just implausibility bingo.
I know of a very eminent QC called Jason - Jason Coppel I don't understand why "our" Jason sounds so different to the rest of his family.
Graciebobcat · 04/02/2021 07:48

I'm really enjoying it. Terrific cast and story.

RigaBalsam · 04/02/2021 08:09

My theory is that her brother and Mother saw Tom die and covered it up as they didn't want Jason's career ruining. So Tom is dead.
Jason swapped the DNA to get her out of prison. The Dad is wanted for something criminal hence loaded and travels around. He will go to prison. Jodie will get the DNA text to say no match but she won't say anything.

Graciebobcat · 04/02/2021 08:11

It intimated yesterday that Tom was running about in the woods when the family thought he had drowned.
