I keep seeing trailers for this. Anyone else looking forward to it?

if anyone wants to read and learn further round HIV and AIDS in the 80s 56 Dean Street, a London based HIV clinic, has put together an AIDS Chronicles digital archive.

The first part charting the early years is online, with parts two and three to be added addressing the fight back and onto advances made to where we are today.

Warning - it makes for some hard reading and listening, including the short sound clips. Really very shocking. There is a section to comment how it makes us feel if anyone wishes.

I watched 5B on Prime the other day. Not sure if it was recommended on this thread or another. It's about the first AIDS ward is San Francisco and the (at the time) ground breaking care the nurses offered to patients, at the time only palliative of course, and the controversy this caused to others. Those nurses deserve to be sainted in my opinion. When they started they didn't know what they were dealing with or what the risks were.

Thank you, I will have a look/listen when I am home tonight.

Thanks to this thread, I found out about National Testing week and participated.
What surprised me was the speed with which I received both the test and then the result. Applied for the test kit on Wednesday and had the result back on the following Tuesday morning.
It was negative, as I thought it would, but I had to think of the scene where the boys were told it would take three weeks to get the results.
The wait must have seemed interminable to some, worrying what the result would be.

I watched the whole series yesterday and have started it again today. I've read most of this thread but not managed to read it all yet, so I'm sorry if it's been mentioned
Absolutely loved it. So beautifully made, I'm seeing things I missed watching it the first time one being a conversation Ritchie had with Donald about Philip Schofield being gay, as it was made before he announced he was gay do you think they added it after or just a big coincidence?

MercyBooth · 18/02/2021 00:04

Just had a tweet about a film called Beautiful Thing pop up in my timeline. Never seen this film before. About to start on Film 4+1

Bilgepumper · 18/02/2021 07:41

I don’t want to read the spoilers, so I haven’t RTFT. However, I just wanted to say what a beautiful human being the character Roscoe is. Physically he is absolutely gorgeous, with a wonderful physique and he moves with such grace and athleticism. ❤️

Apparently it was a coincidence. In the article I read RTD said gay men would often (jokily) claim that whichever celeb they fancied was gay. Clearly PS was the gay man's celeb of choice in the 80s.

RTD also worded it far better than I have!

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 18/02/2021 07:48

the article is here

Thegreymethod · 18/02/2021 13:06

@WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo

Thank you for that! It's so interesting how many coincidences there are in the program that happened in real life not long after it was made!
MoirasRoses · 19/02/2021 17:08

@Bilgepumper - I agree, the actor is fantastic & he seems delightful IRL. Really articulate & thoughtful, massive smile & seems best of pals with the guy who played Colin. They make me smile giggling away at each other ☺️

Jellykat · 19/02/2021 20:59

About to watch last episode for the first time, anyone else??

Thimbleberries · 19/02/2021 21:08

Watching, but not for the first time!

Cloudymornings96 · 19/02/2021 21:15

Also watching and also not for first time!

MercyBooth · 19/02/2021 21:17

Also watching and not for the first time.

MoirasRoses · 19/02/2021 21:27

Watching for the second time also.. I’m already cursing myself for it 😂 I HATE Richies mum so much 😂

Jellykat · 19/02/2021 21:34

I think shes just trying to be strong, believing she has to be in order to fight for her sons life..

notawittyname1954 · 19/02/2021 21:37

Watching again too. Breaking my heart again.

Why doesn't Jill just go to his house?

Thimbleberries · 19/02/2021 21:46

I know. Or write him a letter that his Mum might not be able to read. Or at least have let him know somehow that they were there and that it was his mum keeping them from him.

lotusbell · 19/02/2021 21:46

I think it's easy to hate Valerie for her actions but I also feel sorry for her. As she says to Jill 'you've already had a lot if time with him'. I think she feels tremendous guilt that she didn't know Ritchie was gay and couldn't 'protect' him and now its too late. Understandably she wants him all to herself while she still can. She obviously doesn't know how to deal with it all.

notawittyname1954 · 19/02/2021 21:47

She was angry and upset she wasn't told and jealous that Jill had all that time with him but she behaved terribly. she just wanted him to herself.

Thimbleberries · 19/02/2021 21:52

I just felt awful that Ritchie must have thought his friends had abandoned him. He knew that they phoned but his Mum kept saying they wouldn't visit, they were too busy etc.

lotusbell · 19/02/2021 22:03

I think she's struggling to deal with it, can't quite bring herself to see beyond her own emotions. I also think the accusation that Ritchie grew up in a 'loveless' house is quite harsh, given the era and attitudes to homosexuality. Many teenagers and young people in those days felt they couldn't talk to their parents, still do. I imagine a lot of young people felt they couldn't come out or talk to their parents about their sexuality. Would it have changed anything if he had told his parents he was gay? Doesn't mean he would've necessarily lived his life differently or told them of his diagnosis.
While Valerie is undoubtedly wrong in keeping Jill away from Ritchie in his dying days, I don't think she chose to not be with him when he passes. Or maybe she did. I think Jill's fury was aimed at all parents who weren't supportive. I also really felt for Lucy, especially when Jill pulls her in for that hug with Roscoe.

MercyBooth · 19/02/2021 22:07

I wonder if the subtext of Lucy still living at home was that she has brought potential partners home, they have met her parents, seen how bloody awful they are and run a mile.

Timeforatincture · 19/02/2021 22:22

Just watched the last part. TBH I do think that Valerie was too unspeakable to be believable. That last part was set in 1991 - only 30 years ago. I mean really - it wasn't the 1950s. I knew heaps of gay people in the 1980s - didn't you? If you were my sort of age (at uni 1982 -85) . No-one gave a shit if you were straight or gay? And what sort of monster would keep her dying son away from his friends? Just not plausible that someone would be that vile, A shame because I loved the rest of it. Especially the Welsh mum. Much more like a loving mum.
