I keep seeing trailers for this. Anyone else looking forward to it?

@Graphista Flowers You were a wonderful nurse.

@Jellykat im sorry you lost friends Flowers

HomeschooIerRockthemicrophone · 23/01/2021 03:42

That's why Australia fared better iirc - they got their needle exchanges set up a lot faster. Am finished. I think RTD can be very proud of it. Some characters I liked more than others, some I understood more than others but as Neil Tennant would have said...it was never boring.
Will discuss it all with you at a later date x

HomeschooIerRockthemicrophone · 23/01/2021 03:47

Ah, I see two of you might have binged alongside me! If any want to discuss on a bespoke binged-already thread, let me know and I'll set one up Brew Cake (Will still come back to this one OP but with Ghosts, Killing Eve, Staged etc we have often ended up with three threads - one weekly with spoilers, one weekly without spoilers and one for bingers!)
Later x

Really enjoyed this episode, am determined to watch it weekly, so I have something good to watch on a Friday.
RTD is so good at getting the vibe just right - wonderful writer. Did anyone watch Casanova, many years ago? He did that, and cast David Tennant in the leading role, and it was pacey, funny, sad, and just worked perfectly. Same here - perfect. The music, the cast, everything.
The 80s were my time - and it was spot on.

SnugglySnerd · 23/01/2021 07:27

I thought it was brilliant. I watched it with a sense of impending doom though.
I was saying to dh afterwards that we were children in the 80s and the AIDS campaign has really stuck in our memories but I was teaching a lesson (secondary) a couple of years ago and a resource mentioned HIV and the kids didn't know anything about it. I had to explain it to them. I was shocked to be honest!

Yes! Loved it, was just thinking the other night I'd love to watch it again.

notawittyname1954 · 23/01/2021 09:50

I thought it was thought provoking, funny and heart wrenching. Not a single weak performance. And its going to stay with me a long time. I am ashamed to say that my experience of what was going on was so limited to what I saw on the tv and the famous advert.

I really enjoyed it and it lived up to my expectations. I was worried that it wouldn't. I'm a fan of Olly Alexander and Years and Years too.

For now I'm just watching it at the weekly pace but I may give in and watch the next episode soon.

I love Casanova too and hadn't realised that RTD wrote that too.

notawittyname1954 · 23/01/2021 09:59

@HomeschooIerRockthemicrophone

I would be perfectly happy for you to set up another thread to discuss it. I would love to discuss it having binged it. I know it might all get a bit messy but should be ok if you mark it for those who have watched the whole lot I would have thought Smile.

I’ve just finished binging it, I thought it was fantastic, heartbreaking and awful (how they were treated) all at the same time.

notawittyname1954 · 23/01/2021 10:23

@WinterHoliday

They are a fantastic band aren't they and I love Olly's acting.

I thought this was the Spoiler Thread and the other one wasnt.
Some of this reminded me of the British film Pride few years back.
If anyone hadn't seen that film I recommend it.

southeastdweller · 23/01/2021 11:51

I enjoyed the first episode - intriguing story, characters you want to root for and excellent period detail. But I thought Keeley Hawes was miscast as the dowdy Isle of Wight housewife.

Anne1958 · 23/01/2021 12:08

That was absolutely harrowing.

HIVpos · 23/01/2021 12:14

I thought this was the Spoiler Thread and the other one wasnt.

I thought so too. OP why don’t you ask MNHQ to add a warning to your thread title? You can do so by reporting this thread and requesting the title be edited to say “spoiler”

notawittyname1954 · 23/01/2021 12:20

@HIVpos thank you. how do i do that this is the first time I've done this. sorry to confuse everyone

I binged the first three last night and will finish them tonight if I get the chance. Loved it! Reminded me of 'Pride' too, with similar subject matter, time period, and links to the Welsh character's roots. 'Pride' is such a fabulous film that is often overlooked. Please check it out, anyone who is enjoying this but hasn't seen it.

Go to your thread title, report it and request “Spoiler” be added to the title. Easy to do. Others of us can do so too but as it’s you’re thread you might like to do it.

Totally agree, Pride is a great movie, also emotive but very uplifting. It’s more about lesbian and gay activism but HIV also features. Jonathan Blake (played by Dominic West) was one of the first to be diagnosed with HIV in the U.K. and is now in his 70s - still very much alive and kicking today 🙂

Dallas Buyers Club is another, quite hard hitting film, about when experimental treatment started to treat people diagnosed with HIV and getting access to it.

toconclude · 23/01/2021 12:53

@HaveANiceFuckingDay

It's really not suitable for a 13 year old imo. I have seen all episodes.

Anne1958 · 23/01/2021 13:04

I watched the episodes back to back and it’s sexually very explicit. Nothing is left to the imagination.

unique1986 · 23/01/2021 13:17

I actually thought it might be more explicit.
Normal People seemed more explicit.
If you know what I mean..

unique1986 · 23/01/2021 13:18

The sex scenes were done in a comedy type way.

southeastdweller · 23/01/2021 13:22

@unique1986

I though the same in the first episode. All very tame and I couldn’t take them seriously.
