I keep seeing trailers for this. Anyone else looking forward to it?

Watched this last night and then watched the 4 remaining episodes on 4od. It was bloody brilliant. Honestly the best thing I've watched for ages.

Binged this today

The 80's was my era. I remember so much of that time. I worked on wards where AIDS patients were nursed. It feels very strange to see some parallels with the Covid-19 pandemic.

All the actors were outstanding esp Olly. My (gay) son introduced me to the music of Years and Years several years ago and I am always reminded of him by them. He even looks like and has the same mannerisms as Olly. Of course I cried my fucking eyes out at this and haven't really stopped yet.

Keeley Hawes has also redeemed herself after the bloody tragic Finding Alice I forced myself to sit through the other day. No comparison at all.

Did anyone else watch this back in the 90s?

Finished this today. It was amazing.

I feel so conflicted about Ritchie continuing to have unprotected sex after he was diagnosed. If you look at the cold, hard facts it’s a horrible thing to do. In fact it’s a very, very serious criminal offence (at least it is here in Australia). Despite that, he wasn’t a bad person and I didn’t hate him for it.

What was the deal with Roscoe and Stephen Fry?
Was Colin sacked because his manager realised he was gay whilst in New York?
We didn't see Jill with an love interests she seemed to run round after the boys all the time

I wondered if it was that the first guy Roscoe was taken to the flat by was Stephen Fry's original lover and Roscoe worked out their arrangements and thought he'd give it a punt...
Botoxtime · 24/01/2021 00:29

Oh that makes sense! Also when we saw Colin having sex with the landladys son I was unsure if it was consensual at first

MercyBooth · 24/01/2021 02:32

Thought provoking thread...

I was 20 in 1984 when it started being 'real'. We kind of ignored it, being white middle class straight people, I'm ashamed to say. It wasn't until a few years later when I started to get to know out gay men that I 'got' it.
It still astounds me that in my adult lifetime, we treated people so completely appallingly.

I think Colin was sacked because he wasn't up for sex with his employer. His employer was definitely gay as evidenced by him being arrested for cottaging.
misslomi · 24/01/2021 08:52

I thought Colin was sacked because his employer saw the AIDS papers in his room and assumed he had it?

Can anyone tell me what else the woman with the distinctive voice who had a go at Richies mum in the last episode has also been in? Its driving us mad!

Roscoe was a paid ‘companion’

Colin was sacked because they thought he had AIDS, do you remember his boss immediately leaving the room when he saw the articles about AIDS?

Moya Brady?

@missiomi
I agree it was because his employer saw the AIDS papers and I've been searching for the actress. She's been in so much its driving me mad. too

No not Moya, I think it may be Debra Baker who was the mum with the squash.

FlimFla · 24/01/2021 10:00

A few thoughts -
I thought Keeley Hawes was utterly amazing in this. Really enjoyed her performance, she stole the final episode.

I also liked the main character, her son.

I thought Jill's parents seemed a bit unbelievable.

The American guy who played the original bloke who worked in the tailors when Colin started there had a terrible English accent. Why do they cast people like this ??

There was another unconvincing bit when the first guy Jill was looking after - the Scottish one - asked her to do shopping for him. He said, there's a list and my card on the table. Well people then didn't pay by card for small items of shopping. There was no such thing as debit cards.

Not enough people smoked.

I really disliked the Isle of Wight sister.

notawittyname1954 · 24/01/2021 10:05

@Botoxtime. I felt so sad that Colin didn't get to have a loving relationship but that guy who treated him like dirt

I’ve never cried so much at a tv show! Such a beautiful and poignant series.

I must admit though, I was ugly crying at the last scene when they were all together in the park but I almost choked when that bird swiped down and stole Ritchies food 😂

thecatfromjapan · 24/01/2021 10:17

This article/lecture may be interesting to some of you.

It's an academic lecture - but don't be put off.

It uses the social observation archive to look back at people - all sorts of people - and the AIDS pandemic.

It's a real memory jolt.

And I think it really is a useful part in working out how we respond to ongoing issues now, for example, this pandemic & also how we settle that debt with the past.

For many of us, there has been a long silence about AIDS.

notawittyname1954 · 24/01/2021 10:19

It's not Debra Baker. I'll just have to scroll to end of ep 5 for cast.

thecatfromjapan · 24/01/2021 10:23

Well, when I say 'silence', I mean there has been such an absence of a major cultural reckoning with the enormity of the disaster and what it meant for us.

Partly, I think that is because so many died, and can't speak. And partly, I think it's because it was so traumatic, the only ethical position seemed to be to refrain from speaking in the name of those that suffered/survived - a real fear of appropriation.

But that ethical stance leaves silence, and inappropriate narratives, responses and voices.

I am surprised how angry this all makes me.

And homeschool is correct. The issue has far from disappeared.
