@LunaHeather There must have been something lovable about Ritchie for Ash to be there for him. I think a lot of it with him was bravado. I ended up caring about all of them.

I think they did all the filming Manchester or Liverpool so supposing the Isle of Wight was up there somewhere.
just found this talking about locations

@Ashleys63

Absolutely loved it. I was 18 in 1981 so remember it all very well. So sad. So much young talent and life lost. What I still don't understand though is why some sexually active men caught it and others didn't? as Roscoe said when he received his negative result.....'I've had everyone, how is that fair? ( or words to that effect )
Having sex with someone who is HIV+ and not on treatment doesn’t automatically mean you will contract HIV.

Generally someone with HIV is most likely to pass it on to sexual partners when the infection is recent as this is when their viral load is likely higher. Even without treatment a persons viral load goes up and down, the higher the viral load the greater the chance, the lower the viral load the lower the chance.

It also depends what you’re doing, only around 1/3 of gay men have penetrative sex on a regular basis. HIV transmission rates through oral sex are much lower.

iklboo · 30/01/2021 20:41

They did a lot of filming not far from where I live. I didn't see them filming but recognised some of the buildings.

Ashleys63 · 30/01/2021 20:42

Thank you SimonJT.

x2boys · 30/01/2021 20:53

Yes the protest scenes were filmed at Le man's crescent in Bolton about a mile away from where I live

This might sound like a stupid question. But Henry and Juan Pablo. They’d been in a committed relationship for 30 years, they must have had a third person in there somewhere right?

Forgive me if I am misremembering, but was the HIV test even available then? I thought not. So either could have been HIV positive and not known.
Directionerforever · 30/01/2021 21:44

I guess, I figured that it was unlikely they would have been pos for 30 years (eg prior to the relationship) and stayed well. Thought one or the other of them must have brought it into the relationship at some point.

x2boys · 30/01/2021 21:53

Well it seems unlikely but there are later examples of men surviving HIv for 30+years so it's possible,it would be very unlikely they would both be HIV+ for 30+ years and then succumb to Aids within months of each other though ? I imagine?

Yes, it left that one unanswered didn't it. Must of been someone else involved.

Yes there was sex with A norther outwith their relationship, which i dont think was that unusual.

Mrsjayy · 30/01/2021 22:00

Or maybe they brought someone into their relationship. I realise I said outwith I'm scottish so its allowed Grin

Directionerforever · 30/01/2021 22:08

Yes in my head I’d rather it was a threesome type situation rather than a cheating scenario. #overinvested

Sorry I haven't read the whole thread, but I just finished this tonight and loved it - I haven't been that gripped by a TV series for a while. I kept thinking about the characters when I was doing other things and wondering what would happen next.

Some people mentioned HIV testing being a sensitive issue - I'm pregnant and live in Germany, and had a HIV test as part of the routine screening. It took a while for the assistant taking my blood to get my consent, because I didn't understand what she was asking me - I thought perhaps I was being charged through insurance, until she managed to explain that it can be sensitive/confidential to know about someone's HIV status, so they needed my explicit permission to take that one.

I've been pregnant before and my HIV status noted so I don't know why it took me by such surprise this time but it did.

WinterHoliday · 31/01/2021 09:12

I wasn't going to binge watch but I ended up watching the final three episodes yesterday evening. I'll probably also watch again each week as there were so many standout moments in the series. I think it will stay with me for a long time.

The character I'm most affected by is Colin. I really thought he would make it through to the end of the series largely unscathed - perhaps psychologically affected by losing friends. I had no idea that Aids caused symptoms of epilepsy or dementia so that was quite shocking. Also that he was locked in to the ward. I didn't know that.

I am normally a huge Keeley Hawes fan but I'm not sure that she was totally right for this part. Can't quite put my finger on why though. Also, it's only a small thing but I wish one of the Tozer family had a local accent seeing as they were supposed to be from the Isle of Wight!

Twizbe · 31/01/2021 09:25

I re watched some of it last night.

Re Henry and Juan Pablo ... could they have caught it from Colin? It's likely they caught it from inviting someone into their relationship. By the time Colin met them he already had HIV ....

BertieBotts · 31/01/2021 09:34

I don't think so. I think they are respectful of him and they would have seemed way too old. Henry was keen to protect him from the advances of Mr creepy at work.

Yes, he was their friend not fling partner.

x2boys · 31/01/2021 09:58

Yes and I think because they were so much older and wiser than him they were more like mentors to him .

Mrsjayy · 31/01/2021 10:36

Henry told Colin in the pub that he wasn't interested and he was safe with him so it wouldn't behave been Colin.

lotusbell · 31/01/2021 10:44

Having told myself I'd watch the episodes weekly, to give myself something to look forward to I've ended up watching the series this weekend. Wasn't massively keen on the monologue by Ritchie at the beginning of episode two, it felt very stage school/high school musical but maybe it was meant to be. Not a huge fan of the Ritchie character and his gurning facial expressions - not meant as any offence to Olly Alexander, just the way he spoke annoyed me but that was how his character was meant to be. Loved his youthful bravado which gradually faded to horror and internal torment. Also really loved the nasty twist when Ritchie's mum met Jill and then abruptly announced he had passed away the day before. You knew it was coming but you obviously expected the emotional reunion first!
Colin's story was told wonderfully, i liked how it was told almost retrospectively. The scene of him in hospital when Ritchie visited was uncomfortable to watch but I loved his mum. Nice juxtaposition when his old landlady came in to the hospital about her son, too.
Would've like to seen the friends discussing what happened to Gloria and others, but each episode was a different year so things moved on.
Really glad Jill visited the lonely guy at the end, was hoping she would. Would've liked to have known a bit more about Jill and more of Ash too.

LunaHeather · 31/01/2021 10:51

I was a child for most of the time period covered by that show

But it still made me really nostalgic

Did anyone else feel that? My sister is older so the glimpses into parties etc, then by the end the show, 1991, I was 15 and able to sneak in to certain places - or just go in to the places who didn't care! The 90s were definitely London's heyday for me.

lotusbell · 31/01/2021 11:25

@SweatyBetty20, I went to uni with 'Paul's real life partner, thought he was great in it.

lotusbell · 31/01/2021 11:29

@personwomanmancameratv, re: Ritchie. The irony of him throwing the condoms into the sea on the way over on the ferry. Knowing his dad had given them to him to protect from pregnancy and he's thinking "i won't be needing these!"

x2boys · 31/01/2021 11:35

Yes I thought that @Lotusbell!
