An amazing show. It will stay with me a long time. I found the scene in episode 5 when Richie danced in the car headlamps as he left his old school friend so powerful. Made me think of all his potential in the theatre etc that would never be fulfilled- a really poignant moment I thought.

lotusbell · 31/01/2021 11:49

@newyorky09, yes! Beautiful scene. In fact, the whole thing with Martin was brilliantly done.

I'm guessing I'm in a minority here

I didn't think that at all, though I figured I was meant to

I just thought it was more Ritchie showing off, not moving well anyway, and the way he talked to that guy was harassment anyway.

I think at that point he may have been experiencing signs of dementia too.

Colin broke my bloody heart. I know if I'd known him he would have been my friend. He was so gentle and lovely.

Directionerforever · 31/01/2021 12:34

I didn’t think Ritchie was exhibiting signs of dementia, I think he was just spiralling and scared. He knew that there was only one way out of the situation he was in and he was frightened and yearning back to a simpler time for him, where HIV and AIDS didn’t exist and he had the world at his feet.

x2boys · 31/01/2021 12:41

I did wonder about dementia at first with Ritchie ,but the scenes where he was on the beach with the guy from the island etc were meant to be about 3 years before he died I think ,and mentally he was fairly with if up to his death unlike poor Colin .

notawittyname1954 · 31/01/2021 12:46

@Directionerforever

Thats exactly how I saw it. I think his actions were desperation. Trying to hold on to an old life and maybe make up for missed opportunities while he could. Just clutching at life. I too thought the ballet part was touching. I think a lot of Ritchie's showing off especially latterly was to push away the fear. I think he hid a lot inside.

Yes that was one of my favourite moments too. I cried at that. I have chronic and potentially life limiting illnesses and I have intense grief over “what might have been” had it not been for this curse over my health. I think everyone with severe illness can relate to that moment. It’s heartbreaking.
Fembot123 · 31/01/2021 13:03

What happened to Colin was a heartscald 😨

Fembot123 · 31/01/2021 13:03

And I was 😱 at Gloria’s family burning his baby photos.

I agree. Everyone reacts differently to an HIV (or in those days AIDS) diagnosis. It's akin to a grieving process and can include things like denial and trying to run away from it (metaphorically speaking), partying like there's no tomorrow, complete withdrawal, thinking of all the "what ifs" and acceptance. This is what the characters in It's a Sin depicted.

It also showed via Colin's story that you didn't/don't have to be promiscuous to contact HIV. As SimonJT explained well it's quite difficult to contract the virus. It's to do with quality, quantity and route along with other things - how rough the sex is and causing abrasions and micro tears allowing easier access of HIV, whether lube is used, whether circumcised, having other STIs etc. I'd disagree with a PP over the medical uncertainty of knowing how people contract it, although there is of course an element of bad luck.

Fembot123 · 31/01/2021 13:15

The fact that so many people died let alone by themselves and ashamed breaks my heart.

LunaHeather · 31/01/2021 13:17

That was me. I think you've demonstrated my point, ironically.

My dad didn't make himself popular with his approach of perhaps holding a hand or patting a shoulder to comfort AIDS patients. Obviously he asked if it was okay first, but I am not sure anyone ever said no.

He had colleagues who did not like that at all, sorry to say.

Fembot123 · 31/01/2021 13:30

I’m glad he did ❤️

Your Dad sounds lovely. Pity there weren't more like him.

Pos is right. Colin was receptive and the sex seemed rough - using spit and no lube means greater rectal tears.

Risks above (source CDC research 2014)

The risks show why lesbians were the least affected - apart from sex work and addiction - which is why I found RTD's reminiscing of lesbians occasionally having PIV (receptive) sex with gay men interesting in terms of explaining outliers.
Many women of colour in the States have been infected by their partners returning from prison.

Many women of colour in Sub-Saharan Africa have been infected by sex work being more lucrative without condoms or by rape.
www.unaids.org/sites/default/files/media_asset/women_girls_hiv_en.pdf
Many older women have been affected by having receptive sex with undiagnosed men/men not disclosing their status (vaginal wall can be thinner and drier increasing risk or post-menopause/LTR condoms not considered).

Sounds patronising and I don't wish to be, but stay safe out there x Flowers

It’s very interesting, thanks for sharing and you @HIVpos.

Poor Colin. the guy despised him and used him. He was very rough.

oh and it should go without saying but the risk > the > repeated exposures you have but also the viral load of the partner at the time.

This is why U=U (undetectable = untransmittable) - effective treatment lowers the viral load in the blood.

And this is why destigmatisation is so, so important so that people get tested: reducing the stigma increases testing increases number of people knowing their status increases those on meds reduces number of new cases.

notawittyname1954 · 31/01/2021 14:04

Just wanted to say thanks everyone, I started a thread about a tv programme and it has turned into so much more. I have learned a lot. What a great show if it has brought out all this discussion and thoughts and awareness.

I didn’t see it like that, I thought the guy despised the gay aspect of himself. Again, linking to the issue of self shame.

@BagelsandBrie

I agree the guy despised that aspect of himself and almost seemed like he was taking his disgust with himself out on Colin but I also think he despised Colin too.
