I keep seeing trailers for this. Anyone else looking forward to it?
@hivpos I really don't want to start a trans debate on this thread, but that article is written by a trans woman so not really the same thing as a biological women who caught it (and I'm not judging anybody btw).

There's a couple of internet documentaries on Prime, After 82, which someone has mentioned and another called The Quiet Heroes, which is about a lesbian couple who were doctors in Utah when the virus emerged and it talks to gay men, a woman who caught it from her husband (who was trying to hide he was gay due to stigma in the Mormon community) and the daughter of another woman who had HIV and campaigned for the right to get married (which had been banned for people with HIV and is totally shocking).
Yes Juno is a trans woman 🤷‍♀️. Regardless of who wrote the article the content is excellent, especially IMO the last 2 paragraphs.

I loved Ritchie because he was more complex. His whole monologue about how he didn't believe it was wonderful. I wanted to scream at him because he was such a cocky arrogant guy who thought he knew it all but his face when Jill said his problem was he was too clever and for a moment there was an expression of doubt on his face. He is the sort of person who would infuriate you but you would also love him and want to be in his circle . And I wanted to keep him safe because we could see what he was walking into.

@Palavah

Also, it's not a documentary: RTD isn't responsible for portraying all populations impacted by HIV/AIDS. And as PP have pointed out, gay men were discriminated against by the healthcare system and already viewed as reprobate, dirty, and guilty. So it's not unreasonable to want to focus the story on them.
I agree. It disproportionately affected gay men in the UK which is why it was ignored by the powers that be. I don't think it was wrong for them to focus on gay men in the show. They couldn't have represented everyone.

And Roscoe's dad did mention about women and children he'd seen affected when he went back to Nigeria.

I think Davies did an interview where he said if it had happened now, it would've probably affected a more diverse range of people but it was the 80's so he had to stick to gay men.

@HivPos

I agree that a woman in one of the wards would have shown in a small way that women got it too.

Richie was such a🥂 Flamboyant character ,yes he was arrogant and cocky but he was a beautiful young man who thought he had the world at his feet ,the arrogance of youth .

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 30/01/2021 13:55

I remember watching a film called 'Gia' about a model who contracted AIDS through dug use and died. As a film it was heavily dramatised, but it still made my blood run cold. She died a horrid death.

Mrsjayy · 30/01/2021 15:47

oh I've seen Gia if I remember right it was based on a real model and Angelina Jolie was in it.

Itstheprinciple · 30/01/2021 18:17

I know everyone loves Richie and, of course, his story and Colin's are compelling and tragic but I really loved Roscoe!

notawittyname1954 · 30/01/2021 18:46

@Itstheprinciple

Roscoe was great and I loved Ash too. I loved Roscoe's exit from the family home. Head high dressing as he liked. On the after show thing on you tube last night he said he was cold most of the time because of the lack of clothes they put him in.

Roscoe is probably my favourite. I loved him. And the aunties reactions when he left the family home.

And ash is super hot. And so lovely. Would have been nice to know more of his story.

Bagelsandbrie · 30/01/2021 19:01

Roscoe was brilliant! I really loved Colin more than anyone I think. I love his excitement for life, and his wanting to embrace new experiences. The trip to New York etc. Just fantastic acting. I think we can all relate to that sense of wonder at the world as a young adult taking their first steps as an adults. That’s why it’s so, so sad it was all snatched away from so many of these young people.

Eaumyword · 30/01/2021 19:39

I loved all the characters. Colin was my favourite, he was so sweet and naive. Roscoe was great, funny and unafraid. I'd have liked to have seen more of Ash and discover his background too.
We watched the last episode earlier and I just cried through it. So glad Jill finally confronted Ritchie's mum at the end, as Jill didn't deserve to be blamed.

Maerchentante · 30/01/2021 19:55

I am not sure whether it was his own or a wig, but can I just say, I was a bit jealous of Ash's hair. It looked so lucious. I know, I know, completely missing the point.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 30/01/2021 19:58

l don't think it's arrogance that makes young people that way.

It felt like the end of innocence.

userxx · 30/01/2021 19:59

Binged the whole series today. Fucking hell, that was emotional!! Best thing Ive seen in a long time.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 30/01/2021 20:00

I thought that @Eaumyword, so typical of a mother that thinks the sun shines out of their sons backside to blame the woman closest to them. Plenty of daughter in laws have experienced that.

LunaHeather · 30/01/2021 20:01

La!

I've finished it now.

I could fill a book but I won't.

I'll just say

 1. I didn't like Ritchie, he was like the bouncy puppy guy you try not to be friends with!

 2. I thought the final episode didn't flow. I haven't read the whole thread properly but did someone say it was meant to be more episodes? That would explain it.

 3. if there's one thing i'd like people to take away from this, it's medical uncertainty. My dad did lots of work on AIDS and other diseases. He was one of the people getting shouted at by angry relatives because no one has an answer.

Sadly, the medical profession has set itself up more and more as having answers, as being unable to say "we don't know" seems anathema to them. It has got us into big trouble as a society. I think blame has to be shared - people need to realise doctors don't know everything and a lot of doctors need to stop pretending they do know everything and then spouting it on TV!

So often, as Howard Jones said, no one is to blame.

I thought the Isle of Wight looked gorgeous but I bet if I look up the filming locations, it's not there!

Backbee · 30/01/2021 20:05

People know it affected women and still does, and if they don't there is plenty of information online etc that they can access to learn more. I don't think it's that bad that the focus was on gay men, of whom it did disproportionately affect. As a PP said, it's not a documentary meant to encompass the entirety of the history and experiences of those who suffered.

Ashleys63 · 30/01/2021 20:10

Absolutely loved it.
I was 18 in 1981 so remember it all very well. So sad. So much young talent and life lost.
What I still don't understand though is why some sexually active men caught it and others didn't? as Roscoe said when he received his negative result.....'I've had everyone, how is that fair? ( or words to that effect )

Backbee · 30/01/2021 20:13

What I still don't understand though is why some sexually active men caught it and others didn't?

Although it did easily transmit, as sadly demonstrated by the spread, there do need to be a specific set of conditions for it to pass on, so it's not impossible that someone could sleep with many people and not catch it. Conversely, someone might only ever sleep with someone once and catch it, obviously the odds of both are fairly low, but possible.

Backbee · 30/01/2021 20:14

I say did, that should read does, I was responding in relation to the programme and the time but obviously still happens.

Ashleys63 · 30/01/2021 20:16

Thank you Backbee.

See, that's kind of my point about medical uncertainty.

There cannot always be a specific answer for everything.
