Good Scandi / other foreign crime series?

Now we've overcome our dislike of subtitles, we've just enjoyed DNA and are enjoying 'The Bridge'. That'll keep us going for a while yet I know but while I'm thinking about it thought I'd ask for other recommendations. Particularly crime dramas/thrillers.
We have Netflix and Prime as well as the usual catch up.
Thanks!

Am i alone in having an unwanted prejudice towards the sound of certain languages and a love of others?

I can happily listen to French and Finnish and adore hearing Danish, Swedish and Norwegian but struggle to enjoy the sound of German, Belgian and most East European languages.

Guylan · 19/11/2020 21:04

I have heard good things about Braquo, a French crime series, bit older, first series in 2009. I haven’t watched it though. Also if you are interested in political drama (Borgen is a political drama) I have heard the French series, Spin, is good too.

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/11/2020 21:13

It's amazing how some bits of the language just slip into your normal use. DH was setting up the Sopranos dvd, we are alternating night about between The Bridge and The Sopranos, and he shouted through to me to ask whereabout we were. I shouted back "Afsnit 10" :o

@Guylan I am desperately trying to find the latest series of the bureau online. I'd pay! Let me know if you find it , I've seen s1-4

Sooverthemill · 20/11/2020 07:38

@rosegoldwatcher that's true for me though I get used to them. DH speaks several languages and is almost fluent in German and says that both Dutch and danish are just bad German ( he also says Italian is bad Latin). I think the Croatian and Finnish are my hardest ones as they do sound just so alien ( and I just mean unfamiliar). I love French, Italian, and danish but Spanish always sounds a bit shouty ( though I've spent a lot of time in Spain).

diddl · 20/11/2020 07:49

Ilove the sound of Italian.

Also love all the geticulating!

AnyFucker · 20/11/2020 08:06

If you like listening to Italian voices and lots of gesticulating you need to watch Mafia Only Kills in Summer

It's set in Palermo which is so beautiful and is more of a story about a family than strictly about the mafia. I loved it.

mrsfeatherbottom · 20/11/2020 08:55

We watch a lot of Scandi stuff and love it. Tried a Spanish programme and they talk so fast, that we struggled to keep up with the subtitles in comparison - it was almost stressful!

Sooverthemill · 20/11/2020 09:12

@mrsfeatherbottom yes! Exactly what I found but if you persevere you get used to it. And it's weird as I've spent much more time in Spain ( Madrid) than anywhere in Italy and yet the Italian was fine ( maybe montalbano is just very gentle) but as we've been able to access more foreign drama I have really enjoyed getting used to the sound of other languages

CrackersDontMatter · 20/11/2020 09:22

Some great recommendations here. I just wanted to throw Hinterland into the mix. It's set in mid wales but has a very scandi feel. You can get it in English or Welsh with subtitles. I love it.

IdblowJonSnow · 20/11/2020 09:29

I love Montalbano which is a crime drama with some humour set in Sicily.

And Hellfjord was very entertaining, so quirky and original. Set in the absolute middle of nowhere in Finland.

Oh and did anyone mention Spiral? Otherwise known as Engrenages.

IntermittentParps · 20/11/2020 10:13

Schonerlebnis, I watched Babylon Berlin through Now TV. Sign up for a free trial and when it ends cancel it –they'll offer you a subscription for a couple more months for about £2 a month (they did me, anyway). BB is excellent; fabulous settings, a real sense of place and time, and interesting storylines.

I agree Hinterland is exceptional. Beautiful and sad.

Ride Upon the Storm is good –Danish, not crime but a family drama about a family of priests.

Also I Know Who You Are. Spanish, crime, really quite nasty (in a good way). Think it was on the Beeb but don't know if you can still get it.

midsomermurderess is there really a third series of Thicker Than Water? I thought the second one ended quite conclusively. Would like another series though.

KittyMcKitty · 20/11/2020 10:18

Agree Hinterland was fantastic and despite not being Scandi was the reason I fell down the Nordic rabbit hole!

Hellfjord looks great is it available to watch anywhere.

Am now half way through the second season of Trapped and just love it although am feeling that sense of sadness that it’ll soon be over.

Guylan · 20/11/2020 12:39

@Sooverthemill, you will be pleased to hear you can get it on Amazon Prime for a fee. I am only on the second series but it has me gripped.

Sooverthemill · 20/11/2020 14:09

@Guylan thank you. I check frequently and hadt noticed it come up before so I've now paid. I never ever mind paying for this stuff, I wish they would just put it on usual prime pay as you stream. Desperate to find out what's happened to malatru

randomer · 20/11/2020 15:45

The Bureau is on Amazon Prime. Series 3 gets very gruelling.

randomer · 20/11/2020 15:46

God ,Trapped is unrelenting.

HereComesYourMam · 20/11/2020 17:26

Has anyone suggested Wisting? It's Norwegian, very noir, on iPlayer. Really enjoyed it - almost up there with The Killing and The Bridge IMO.

HereComesYourMam · 20/11/2020 17:27

(although his daughter is kind of annoying)

IntermittentParps · 20/11/2020 17:35

Someone suggested 'Whistling', which I assumed was an auto-correcto for Wisting.
I'd forgotten about the daughter but yes, she is annoying isn't she?! It's good though.

Made me think –there's another thing, called Valkyrien, with the same lead actor. Not crime as much as sci-fi, sort of, but not like space/aliens sci-fi, more 'speculative' IYSWIM. It goes a bit weird, but it's quite good, and an interesting idea.

Sooverthemill · 20/11/2020 20:41

@randomer yes it was on ch4 to start then moved to prime but s4&5 are on sun dance channel on prime. We've watched 1-4 twice through and will start s5 tomorrow. Its excellent

KittyMcKitty · 20/11/2020 20:43

@randomer

God ,Trapped is unrelenting.
It is but sooooo good! I was worried I wouldn’t like S2 but it’s just as good as S1!

Racing through Bordertown, about to start third story. Should say, good to watch in spite of the hero, whom I find hard to warm to. Part of that could be the flat delivery of the dubbing in this show.
