Now we've overcome our dislike of subtitles, we've just enjoyed DNA and are enjoying 'The Bridge'. That'll keep us going for a while yet I know but while I'm thinking about it thought I'd ask for other recommendations. Particularly crime dramas/thrillers.
We have Netflix and Prime as well as the usual catch up.
Thanks!

A couple not mentioned yet: The Legacy (Danish) and Modus (Swedish). Oh, and another great French one: La Mante.

Wow, so many suggestions so quickly, really appreciate all your suggestions. @Defenbaker we are starting at the beginning, but thanks for making sure.

The Killing will never be beaten for me.

Defenbaker · 15/11/2020 21:33

@kennelmaid Yes, he's the one - brilliant actor. Apparently he was quite a famous movie actor in his younger days. Such an expressive face, not classically handsome, but so watchable.

The Swedes know a thing or two about dark drama, that's for sure. Sweden... home of Abba, Volvos, brilliant scenery, lovely accents and fine drama - what's not to love?!

Xmasbaby11 · 15/11/2020 21:45

Fortitude - set in Iceland I think?
Mystery Road - Australian
The Twelve - Belgian

SkaraBrae · 16/11/2020 07:26

Fortitude is set in Svalbaard and has amazing landscapes- it's a great series with a slight Twin Peaks vibe.

Not straightforward crime but involving a police investigation about missing children Dark is v good. It's a German show that involves flashbacks and time travel.
There are 2 series that have got rave reviews (currently re-watchinf the first as I couldn't remember everything by the time the other 2 series came out).
They did an amazing job at casting actors playing the characters in 33 years gaps.

Skipsurvey · 16/11/2020 07:29

Agree Walter presents is good - Deutschland 89.
Trapped is good - Icelandic

nemeton · 16/11/2020 09:01

Trapped is excellent.

Closer to home, Shetland and Hinterland are along similar lines. The latter is exceptional television.

I like Borgen best though- almost no death Smile

Schonerlebnis · 16/11/2020 09:29

Shetland definitely has a scandi vibe but no need for subtitles Grin
Under the same sky (german) is really good, now on channel 4 I think. East/west 70s drama/thriller.
Really want to see babylon berlin but haven't got sky, debating whether to buy the boxed set on amazon.... Anyone seen it ?

User647647 · 16/11/2020 13:00

Another vote for Bordertown and Trapped

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 16/11/2020 13:38

Fabulous, thank you all. I see some fab duvet day binge watching sessions coming up

Cardinal - Canadian but definite Scandi darkeness - 4 series on iPlayer

jimloop · 16/11/2020 15:53

I've just started DNA on BBC iplayer

Sooverthemill · 16/11/2020 16:24

@hanahsaunt love Cardinal!
The bridge
The killing
Borden
Occupied
Follow the money
Legacy
Trapped
Undercover
Black widow ( duct has)
Gomorrah ( Italian mafia)
All the Scandinavian ones on Walter presents/ iplayer/ netflix
Disparu on iplayer
Spin ( on Walter presents)
Engrenage ( think it was called spiral?) on iplayer
The bureau des legendes which has first 3 series on Amazon but then you need to find somewhere else for last 2 serious

We rarely watch anything that's not subtitled now ( but only watch one episode of any tv programme) a night

bilbodog · 16/11/2020 16:37

Just watching undercover - very good. Also loved dark - about time travel.

Not crime as such, but money heist - spanish - excellent.

And succession on now tv - brilliant!

missmus · 16/11/2020 16:40

Not sure if you'll get it in the UK, but we're watching a Danish series called Ulven Kommer (The Wolf Comes) which is absolutely brilliant. It's just come out here and I am counting down to the next episode on 20 Nov. Keep an eye out for it.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 16/11/2020 17:23

just hopping on to follow the tips - everything I watch has already been recommended!

SleepingStandingUp · 16/11/2020 21:20

Couldn't get into the Dark bit we enjoyed The Rain

midsomermurderess · 16/11/2020 21:38

I'm enjoying The Lawyer (Danish/Swedish) on Walter Presents. Dead Wind is a dark Finnish police drama on Netflix which I also enjoyed; Thicker Than Water (Swedish, hints of Bloodline to it); Fallett (Netflix, a funny Anglo/Swedish series: incompetent but earnest English cop in Sweden)
Not Scandinavian, but v good are Bad Banks (German, with Barry Astma) and Professor T (Belgian, criminal psychologist helps the police, sounds a bit hackneyed but there is a Belgian surreal spin on it).
So much good stuff out there.

Skipsurvey · 16/11/2020 21:55

Just started borgen, thanks for the recommendation

Skipsurvey · 16/11/2020 23:51

once we had got rid of the dubbing, i hate dubbing, much prefer subtitles

KittyMcKitty · 17/11/2020 09:00

Just found this thread - fantastic, yiu inure my kind of people!!! Started Trapped last night and loving it.

Does anyone know where I can see the last season of The Killing? Can’t find it on Amazon or Netflix ☹️

Frazzled2207 · 17/11/2020 09:07

Twin is great and incredible scenery
Just finished DNA- A bit silly but very watchable.

Both on iplayer I think.

diddl · 17/11/2020 13:50

I've just looked on Imdb & there are three seasons of Thicker than Water?

Sure that I have only seen two, so thank you @midsomermurderess for mentioning that one!

KumquatSalad · 17/11/2020 14:03

The Korean drama Stranger (netflix) is good.
