Danish crime drama. Maybe one for you @stumblein

Rolf Larsen a respected detective on the police force has his life brutally upended when his baby daughter goes missing :(

I agree with @Wingedharpy who knows what psychological damage had been done to Minna and her adopted parents would have been bereft. Of course her real mother wanted her back, I would have done in her position, but she'll never get that relationship back really. Rolf's wife had long since come to terms with her baby being dead, presumably this difference led to them spitting up, and she was pregnant with her new man. Julita and the child were so happy and bonded, it would have been cruel to remove her at that point and Rolf knew that from the Minna situation.

The series was called DNA but the conclusion was that so much more than DNA was involved.

Wemayhavemetbefore · 15/11/2020 08:15

A couple of questions:

  • how did forensics man know that Julita had taken Andrea? Did he see her on the ferry? - I don't think I saw that, but otherwise he couldn't have guessed, could he?
  • if I've got the timing right, wasn't Andrea's baby only about 4 weeks old at the point that Melanie collected her from the convent? In which case wouldn't Julita have realised that Andrea couldn't be her, because she was several months old afair - or has Julita just suppressed that knowledge?
I don't think Rolf will go to prison - forensics man seems very remorseful, so if he lives he'll say that he tripped over the table and Rolf was just trying to resuscitate him.

Rolf has no right not to tell his ex-wife - not his decision to make! And sooner or later Julita and Andrea may discover she can't be her daughter (these things do sometimes emerge through medical tests for other reasons), so best to know that now. In real life yes the police will have to tell ex-wife. It is an absolutely terrible question how to put things right.

vjg13 · 15/11/2020 08:36

It didn't didn't explain how the DNA data base man knew who had taken the baby from the ferry, perhaps he caught some glimpse of her! The ferry plot was the real weakness in the whole thing.

Halsall · 15/11/2020 09:42

wemayhavemetbefore I thought that about the age of the babies too. Andrea was a lot older, months rather than weeks. But presumably Julita was totally desperate by then, had followed the trail all the way to Denmark, realised the wife was Polish etc, and then having seen a baby arriving at forensic guy's house she persuaded herself it had to be hers.

CaptainMyCaptain · 15/11/2020 09:57

With the juggling timelines thing do we actually know how long it took Julita to get to that point though? Days, weeks or months?

Wemayhavemetbefore · 15/11/2020 10:05

I think Julita said to granny just before she set off to keep watch on the Mandorla convent that it had been a month, so time was running out for her to stop the baby being sent for adoption.

So even allowing a week or so after that, her baby would have been 6 weeks old at the time Julita is on the ferry. I do agree that it wasn't surprising that she convinced herself Andrea was hers - and she might not have had that much experience with babies anyway - quite a few 18 yr olds perhaps wouldn't be able to tell that a several months old baby couldn't be only 6 weeks!

Wingedharpy · 15/11/2020 11:03

Forensics man put 2and 2 together.
Evidence fromthe"stolen" car (Julita's) on the ferry the night baby was abducted showed there had been a baby in it at some point.
We also saw him, in flashback, visiting Julita's Granny's home, where he saw her with a baby (he knew hers was dead by this point) and he gave her paperwork for baby and money.

There is no way that ex wife, once she knew her daughter was still alive, would have agreed to let her stay with Julita. She would have fought tooth and nail to get her back, though, in reality, her daughter would have no memory of her and wouldn't even speak the same language.

stumbledin · 15/11/2020 14:51

I think the ending was signalled after the showed the forced reunion of the stolen baby with her natural father. But yes it was really sad to watch and the actor (whose name I dont know) should the mixed emotions very convincingly.

I see a second series with some other crime story, but with this as a back story. Some sort of role as aunt and uncle or ... ?

Still fee a bit cheated as I obviously missed bits of the plot by not realising the 5 year gap in the 2 story lines Blush

But how anyone spotted Julita in the early ferry scenes is beyond me.

And how did the data cop who was covering up for his wife, ever identify her so quickly that he could turn up with money and false papers? Was it through the car being reported stolen/

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/11/2020 17:20

Finally seen

I am torn. Was sad Rolf didn’t get his daughter back but he knew she was safe and loved

I wanted him to fall in love with j and then be dad 💕

And that J didn’t steal her for spite but coz she thought was her daughter

Tho

First thing in my mind was how can a baby of few weeks /4/6 tops be the same size as a 4mth + baby

Tho if Rolf hadn’t been stupid and left daughter alone in the rain on a ship while he was sick ,,,,,,,

Who would really do that

Forensic man did the dna in car. Relised it was Andrea. Worked out what happened then doctoured the dna

Surely minna could have been shared care with bio mum and adopted parents

Would the law really uproot her and place back with mum.

Was good and look forward to next weeks bbc4 scando drama

Overall I liked this but lots of things bothered me mostly
A. Why anyone would agree that the best thing for minna would be to drag her away from all she’d ever known.
B. The main one- why Rolf took the baby on the ferry in the first place! I mean you’d never take a tiny baby on a continental goose chase. If you couldn’t go you’d just send someone else.
C. Julita can’t have been sure that the baby was here. The timelines were confusing but it seemed like she got the baby a few weeks pp, whereas Andrea was clearly so much older. She was desperate but even so she would have suspected.

Frazzled2207 · 16/11/2020 00:20

Was hers not here!

Kinraddie · 18/11/2020 19:37

I enjoyed it, but was definitely confusing. Did the foster daughters that lived at the strange farm place actually have numerous babies, or were they 'fake' pregnancies to provide paperwork for stolen babies from poland? And why did Julita's boy neighbour give Rolf the box of papers etc? What was the point of that?

Sooverthemill · 19/11/2020 07:43

God, so many holes and did anyone else read that the writer from the Killing who was originally involved left after 4 episodes because of creative difference? Like the gaping plot!.

Main gripes for me:
I don't understand why, after such a shit time at Mandorla, Julia would trust a new set of nuns in France and just up and go to live there. Crazy

And why on earth did Rolf, for a temporary assignment, rent an apartment? I'm guessing he stays on and he and the most excellent Neel form a new police team solving murders and such like. Great characters but she was fab.

We guessed it was the fat bloke from the bridge, he's too big an actor to be the support. Did anyone see him in 1864? He was superb.

Hope there is a s2

Sooverthemill · 19/11/2020 07:43

@Kinraddie fake pregnancies to provide cover

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/11/2020 14:50
