I fell asleep during Osaka and Brady ‐ after Osaka won the tie-break I thought the contest would be over! Then I woke up and SW had just taken the first set 6-1. I was really surprised! I am pleased that Azarenka won though.
I think Osaka may struggle against a better returner than Brady, and Azarenka certainly is that.
I'm thinking back on SW career and I actually think she has always done better when the pressure of expectation is off. When she's the favourite she seems to get very negative. I'm even thinking back to 2003 (was it?) when she had the Slam and lost that semi at RG to Hénin. She just couldn't deal with the fact that somebody was actually beating her and she got very wound up by the crowd not being on her side and wasn't very gracious in defeat.
(I remember watching the match while I was supposed to be studying for my school exams
)
Then, after her injuries and everything, when she wasn't favourite any more, she seemed much more positive again.
I still think it's a shame that Hénin retired so early. I still remember that match against Clijsters at Wimbledon where she basically had a career-ending injury mid-match. She is an extremely good commentator (very perceptive and intelligent, and surprisingly funny!) but it is a pity that her English isn't really good enough for doing it on English-speaking channels. She has spoken about being open for coaching once her kids are a little older and I can imagine that any player would be quite lucky to get her, as she's very tactical.
