Grin

Djok is an odd one, (in many ways ), much is made of the fact he speaks 5 languages- and he likes to show off, but I can never tell if he is as good as he thinks he is.

Raahh · 08/09/2020 20:50

But I shouldn't really criticise, I learnt 3 languages 30 years ago- and have never used them since. Apart from a bit of home work with the older dcBlush.

Jourdain11 · 08/09/2020 20:53

Mladenovic plays the 5 languages thing too - but of course she's bilingual to start (the same languages as me!) and her English really is good. I don't know about the Spanish and so on, but Spanish is much easier to learn for a French native-speaker.

Did anyone see Paire's tweet reply where he replied to someone who wrote "Week 2 of the US Open and I'm still here" or something similar. Paire wrote "and so am I" Grin

Raahh · 08/09/2020 20:58

Aww, poor Benoit Grin

Jourdain11 · 08/09/2020 21:01

The French Federation is trying to negotiate an early release for the Paire 11 today to Europe...

Raahh · 08/09/2020 21:02

Sascha is definitely not as happy as he was the other day. I mean, he won that match convincingly, but he was also a lot more focused. Of course, a lot is due to Coric, who is not playing badly.

Raahh · 08/09/2020 21:03

early release Grin

It all sounds so dramatic, doesn't it?

PrivateSpidey · 08/09/2020 21:07

Poor Benoit!! I hope they will make it back in time for the European tournaments.

Has Kitzbuhel (sp?) already started? I saw a photo of Nishikori playing on clay but I couldn't tell if he was practising or playing a match.

(I could just Google this of course, but why not just pointlessly witter about it here instead?!)
Grin

Meanwhile Grin it feels like this match could go either way.

Jourdain11 · 08/09/2020 21:07

I'm translating directly from French though, and it always sounds more dramatic.

I remember when Boris was in ICU I was watching France 24 and began translating verbatim. "The British Prime Minister is condemned to placement in the ICU. Boris Johnson is gravely ill..." DH said "you shouldn't take the piss" and I was protesting, "but I'm only translating what they say!"

They are due out of quarantine on Thursday , so they'll be fine.

They are playing the round of 32 at Kitzbuhel today, I believe.

PrivateSpidey · 08/09/2020 21:13

That's good. I'm glad they'll be released in time!

Jourdain11 · 08/09/2020 21:16

You know he tested negative the next day? It seems very likely that it was a false positive. I read that there is more potential for this in athletes, it's something about typical inflammation levels...

PrivateSpidey · 08/09/2020 21:21

Yes I read about the negative test - really tough for him. That's v interesting about athlete tests, I hadn't heard that.

Raahh · 08/09/2020 21:21

It's all a bit of a mess.

Fizzywinegum · 08/09/2020 22:04

Just having a quick read through and had my second Boris confusion - I wondered what had happened to Boris Becker to make him end up in ICU but then realised you were talking about Boris Johnson!

The whole Benoit thing was a bit strange

JaneJeffer · 08/09/2020 22:13

Yay! Go Sascha!!

I'm watching a programme about fabulously rich people on BBC2. £100,000 for a bottle of wine Confused

I was awake in the middle of the night, as usual, (plus the dog was keeping me up), and score checking the PCB/Shaggy match. In a way, I am glad PCB won, it means no-one can say he hasn't earned his place, ater the Djok fiasco.

It was quite a topsy-turvy one score wise-he lost the 4th set 0-6!

Also glad to see Osaka is through.

Raahh · 09/09/2020 07:07

Jane £100,000! wow. That's obscene.

Raahh · 09/09/2020 08:11

Oh- I saw Sascha say something, and didn't quite catch who he was talking to.

Very awkward indeed.

PatienceVirtue · 09/09/2020 15:19

Djokovic's English is pretty fluent I'd say though like all players he speaks this weird sort of international English where you use the phrase 'for sure' too much and in a way that native speakers don't. 'He's a good player, he played aggressive, but I came out, for sure, and played aggressive as well'.

Nadal is the shocker. His English is stunningly bad for someone who has such an international job. Disclaimer, I'm rubbish at languages but actually my Spanish is better than his English.

Of course Fed speaks beautifully doesn't he, but then he would.

Fizzywinegum · 09/09/2020 15:35

Poor Rafa - his English is much better than it used to be but still descends into Rafaese sometimes Grin

He needs to work on his French though - he usually manages a few merci beaucoups and then reverts to Spanglish (disclaimer I am rubbish at languages so admire anyone who can speak a second language!)

Jourdain11 · 09/09/2020 15:53

The Queen of For Sures was Justine Hénin.

"I want to thanks for sure the tournament organisers."
"She played a good match for sure"
"For sure I came out fighting in the third set"
"It's going to be for sure a very big match."

It was like someone had told her that you have to say it in every sentence, for sure Grin
