I think November was Davis Cup - but he probably didn't get a proper shirt then either!

He played some really good doubles matches, iirc, at the ATP cup, with Rafa, and Feli. Maybe now, he will be better known, as he is very much in the shadow of the bigger Spanish names. (He might like it that way!)

kazzaD66 · 10/09/2020 10:56

I'd like Azarenka to win and PCB on the men's side.

Colin Firth is 60 today!

How can Mr Darcy be 60 and it be 25 years ago that he smouldered at Elizabeth Bennet? Blush

JaneJeffer · 10/09/2020 11:02

When I saw the draw I thought ooh Sascha and his BFF Domi could end up playing each other in the final but I never really expected Sascha to get so far after all his dodgy serving. I'd absolutely love him to win after all the problems he's had. Anyway it's great to "see" him back at this level.

kazzaD66 · 10/09/2020 11:03

And Hugh Grant was 60 yesterday!

Anyway, as you were Grin

JaneJeffer · 10/09/2020 11:04

kazza you're making me feel old!

OP posts:
kazzaD66 · 10/09/2020 11:10

Sorry Jane Grin
Although, for some reason, I think I'm older than you so.....

And DS is 17 tomorrow and I certainly don't know where that time has gone! Confused

JaneJeffer · 10/09/2020 11:27

My friend's brother was 40 the other day and I remember swinging him around when he was a toddler. How is it possible?!

@PrivateSpidey

I wish that was the final as well. But at this stage I don't mind who wins out of those that are left!

Looks like Azarenka was extremely convincing from that scoreline. That should be a great match v Serena.

Azarenka was out of this world. She steamrollered poor Mertens - and it looked like she barely had to break a sweat. It was like she was training, executing these textbook points!
PrivateSpidey · 10/09/2020 14:13

Well that sounds v impressive Jourdain, especially as Mertens is a good player in her own right! I think Azarenka will really give Serena a match, could be a v close one.

kazza I saw that it was Hugh Grant's birthday yesterday but I thought he was 50, not 60!!! Shock As for Colin Firth turning 60... surely not. Anyway Mr Darcy himself is timeless so it's ok Grin

MajesticWhine · 10/09/2020 20:52

oh fuck it sorry,
I wish the women weren't playing so late, I would really like to watch.

Raahh · 10/09/2020 20:55

majestic it is frustrating.

I want an Osaka/Azarenka final- same as the Cincy final should have been (before Naomi had to pull out).

PrivateSpidey · 10/09/2020 21:13

Hi Majestic - yes it's annoying about the time difference isn't it. I would really like to see both these matches.

But I definitely cannot stay up. I'm already feeling shattered.

There is a funny video on twitter of some of the ATP players talking about the "bubble". Diego watches The Crown apparently! And someone (can't remember who) plays Uno. We've played a lot of Uno the last few months as well Grin

Fizzywinegum · 10/09/2020 21:51

I like the idea of Diego watching The Crown Spidey Grin

It is a shame that the matches are on so late (for us). I assume the men’s semis will be the same?

At least the finals are usually on at a reasonable time (unless they go to 5 long sets and then I can’t manage to stay awake!)

Fizzywinegum · 10/09/2020 21:54

I’ve just checked and the men’s semis start at 9pm so might be able to watch most of the first one (Sascha &PCB)

PrivateSpidey · 10/09/2020 22:24

That's good Fizzy. Yes the finals seem to have been long matches late into the night here in recent years (or is it just me not being able to stay awake any more?!).

Starksforthewin · 11/09/2020 05:23

Fantastic win for Vika, I’m delighted for her.

Her shitty ex partner cost her a lot of time on the tennis tour with custody hearings for Leo, so I am thrilled she is showing such great form.

Williams pulled out all her usual tricks in the third set when she was losing; medical time out, extreme grunting, but didn’t work this time.

What a great final it will be, rooting for Vika.

Wish all commentators would shut up about the “ oh my god, you pushed a baby out of your vagina and you still want to play tennis...”
Fuck off with that shit.

Raahh · 11/09/2020 06:52

Starks Grin

I couldn't watch, but was awake, and score watching. It felt like Serena did her usual trick of not fighting for the second set- and I fully expected her to race through the 3rd, like she did the first. I am really pleased for Vika- so I get the Osaka/Azarenka Cincy final that wasn't, after all Grin.
It has been a great few weeks for Vika, and quite a difficult time emotionally for Osaka, so it will be really interesting to see how the final goes.

And I wanted 'anyone but Djok or Serena' to win this year- and it's worked out nicely.

Kyrgios has been up to his tricks- bad mouthing PCB on twitter, saying he is only good for clay. PCB responded that he must be bored.

Starksforthewin · 11/09/2020 07:24

I’m with you, Raahh on the Anyone But Djok/Williams... can’t quite believe it came true.

Apparently Williams has confirmed in Press that she will be playing Roland Garros. Surprised me a little.

Fizzywinegum · 11/09/2020 07:36

It looks as if they were both good matches from the score lines - I’m also glad that Serena isn’t in the final.

I’m surprised that she has confirmed that she’s playing in the French Starks - she seemed to be hedging her bets the other day and wasn’t happy about having to stay in a hotel rather than a private house. I suppose it gives her another opportunity to try to beat Margaret Court’s record.

From his Instagram I see that Rafa's leg has arrived in Rome - hopefully the rest of him is there as well Grin

Naughty Nick - he just can’t help himself can he?

Raahh · 11/09/2020 07:57

I'm surprised Serena is playing too.

The thing with the Court record is she can only equal it by winning another slam at this stage, so then we would have to put up with 'will Serena win another slam and beat MC's record'. I'm not sure I can be bothered with that Grin.

JaneJeffer · 11/09/2020 08:13

Williams pulled out all her usual tricks in the third set when she was losing; medical time out, extreme grunting, but didn’t work this time.
Ugh just reading that made me angry. I'm glad I wasn't watching!

OP posts:
PrivateSpidey · 11/09/2020 09:11

The record should be about open era titles I think. Court won 11, Chrissie and Martina each on 18, Steffi on 22, Serena on 23 and she is the record holder. That's how it should be imo. I don't understand the need to bring amateur titles into it. Confused

As for Kyrgios' comment, (or should I say "Muffins" as my iPad keeps wanting to autocorrect to!). PCB has done better on hard courts than clay anyway. And he has every right to be in that semi final - his second GS semi iirc!! Go on PCB!!

Raahh · 11/09/2020 09:38

Yy,Private I was going to addthat PCB hasa better record on hard courts than clay. So Nick's tweet made no sense.
