Didn't Borg sell off his replica Wimbledon trophies too? Mind you, there wasn't a lot of actual prize money around in the 70s/80s- with his playboy lifestyle, its little wonder the money ran out.

Frankly, there were very few (if any) who could compete with the Stefan in the looks department. His tennis was also lovely to look at Grin

Yes, I believe he's done rather well in the Swedish property market, amongst other things........
Such as staying happily married to the same woman for 30-odd years, no scandals, no bankruptcies, no drunken shenanigans, no controversial opinions.......

Still, Boris wouldn't be Boris if he behaved himself Grin

Slight x post re Boris Raahh Grin

Raahh · 03/07/2020 14:31

Kazza - chalk and cheese, Boris and Stefan, but great tennis rivals.

I think Stefan was the most elegant tennis player to watch. It's funny that I went from being a massive fan of his, to Rafa- can't get much different in playing style really. Both genuinely decent blokes, though.

DD2 thinks Virginia's frilly knickers are hilarious.

It's funny that she has just said that- everyone goes on about Virginia's Wimbledon win- but she did win at the US and Melbourne as well.

Combing her hair Grin

Oh look a monogrammed cardigan Grin

JaneJeffer · 03/07/2020 14:54

Hairdressers got away with murder back then.

Raahh · 03/07/2020 14:57

Monogrammed cardies were big in the 70sGrin.

I have just checked- and she only played at the Australian open twice. She won it at her first attempt.

Hair was quite low maintenance, wasn't it? She had a lovely head of hair, though.

Here's Pat and Ivan, in their very short, shorts Grin

The commentary is so funny. "How sensible of him to put the towel over his head."

Fizzywinegum · 03/07/2020 15:03

Yes and use a wet flannel Grin

The shorts are very short Shock

It looks as if there’s no grass on the court!

Raahh · 03/07/2020 15:09

It must have been a very hot year- looks like it could give Chatrier a run for it's money here!

JaneJeffer · 03/07/2020 15:12

I'm looking at the very fair woman in the front row with the boob tube and thinking she must have got burned to a crisp!

Raahh · 03/07/2020 15:14

It's funny though, because I remember June 87 was very wet up here.

Talking of wet- I ought to take the dog out before the rain comes back...

You would have thought that there being no grass would have favoured Lendl but apparently not Hmm

PrivateSpidey · 03/07/2020 15:14

@JaneJeffer

The commentary is so funny. "How sensible of him to put the towel over his head."

Raahh · 03/07/2020 15:15

Jane - she probably did- this being the 80s, (and if my own mother was anything to go by)- sunscreen consisted of the lowest factor oil she could get. Hmm.

JaneJeffer · 03/07/2020 15:16

Is that a yellow duster on that man's head? Grin

Raahh · 03/07/2020 15:19

Yellow dusterGrin

I'm beginning to think they have got a lot stricter over dress codes for specatators in recent years, looking at some of these old matches.

Raahh · 03/07/2020 15:21

Fizzy well yes, it's odd that the lack of grass didn't help him.

The ground staff must have upped their game over the years- or they keep things far more covered now. You never see the courts looking like that (and a couple of years ago, we had a very hot spell around this time, with no rain for weeks).

OP posts:
JaneJeffer · 03/07/2020 15:24

I think they have a different type of grass now.

Raahh · 03/07/2020 15:28

Jane I think they do.
