We have been discussing the series Our Girl since the first one aired in 2014 and are now on number 56! Occasionally between discussions of Our Girl, we watch the 1990s series of Soldier Soldier.

Ah - it's the history lesson

Rhubarb01 · 28/07/2020 21:41

going back to his roots - duh!

Rhubarb01 · 28/07/2020 21:41

Oh forget it, I keep typing it all wrong - you know what I mean.

Rhubarb01 · 28/07/2020 21:44

It's getting tense in the vehicle and in the lecture room.

eejittwo · 28/07/2020 21:45

Oh, is this the place where Hurst loses it.

Rhubarb01 · 28/07/2020 21:46

Explosion up ahead. Lt Hurst freezes. Kingy is right to stay in the vehicle. The suicide bomber was trying to draw them outside. Now they are upside down.

Ilovelblue · 28/07/2020 21:46

I don't think we find out the significance of the balloons do we until the end?

Here comes the eye candy.....

Ilovelblue · 28/07/2020 21:47

It's a real baptism of fire for poor Mimi.

And here is the delightful Dr Antonio.

She speaks and it comes out of his mouth....

Rhubarb01 · 28/07/2020 21:51

We do our sums now - Mother is about 50, so Prof is 30 ish?

Rhubarb01 · 28/07/2020 21:52

Kingy covers up for Lt Hurst - now he knows he is too green and needs to learn quickly.

eejittwo · 28/07/2020 21:52

If I can count, the Prof's mum must have been fairly young when she had him. He'd be 22 before he started teaching - 3 yr history degree and one year pace - plus time to get married, and for her to run off with the head of geography and for him to then decide to join up, do basic training etc and all in 50 years since his mother was a bump!

Ilovelblue · 28/07/2020 21:53

I'd agree he is about 30 or so, yes.

Georgie and Mimi have a little chat about the day's events. Mimi pretends she's ringing her parents but hangs up as soon as Georgie leaves.

So Mimi lies about calling her parents.

Ilovelblue · 28/07/2020 21:56

Omar's name now comes up. Hurst obviously doesn't know of the connection between Georgie and Elvis. Georgie rushes away as another flashback hits her.

An old enemy has returned to haunt Georgie.

Ilovelblue · 28/07/2020 21:57

OK ladies, are you happy to leave it next week as I'm away or would you rather carry on?

OP posts:
eejittwo · 28/07/2020 21:57

It does work quite well as a follow on - a bit more realistic than the virtually total blanking of Elvis in the broccoli episodes.

eejittwo · 28/07/2020 21:58

Happy to take a break of one week.

Magi84 · 28/07/2020 22:01

I think that was excellent as a follow-on, made perfect sense that she would have all those flashbacks. What a total irrelevance were those other eight episodes.

Ilovelblue · 28/07/2020 22:02

Agree that those Nigeria, Belize and Bangladesh episodes were just a waste of time.

Rhubarb01 · 28/07/2020 22:27

I think the previous 8 episodes worked better as a measure of CJ's issues and descent into PTSD rather than Georgie's, but I agree that this series quite easily follows Nepal and makes sense.

Happy to miss a week ilove . Hope you have a good time.

Morning ladies. Just checking in. The "new normal" in hotels is a bit strange but it's been nice to have a getaway and the weather has been very kind to us compared with the rain back at home.

Last night, we watched the Downton film (Sky TV in the room). I was surprised to see Major Tom Cadman from the first series of Soldier Soldier as butler (with a fancy title) to the King and Queen. Quite a nice film if you've not already seen it and were a previous viewer of the Downton series.

Hi ilove. Glad you had a good few days away. I must admit that I haven't been in a shop other than the garden centre since March and still don't really have any plans to do so. I've been having my groceries
delivered every week since last summer, so it's been no change really and ordering more online in general.

I saw the Downton film when it came out and enjoyed it. It's really a bit of a Christmas special on a big screen, but it was lovely and the costumes were great. Another, film I saw at the start of the year was 'Emma' which I also enjoyed and the costumes in that were stunning. I was almost distracted by the intricate details and embroidery. I hope they make some more Downton films. I seriously think they could do a new series or film based on the children of the main characters - "Downton - the next generation!". They would all be old enough to be involved in WW2, so perhaps I'm a bit historically biased, but there's definitely scope for a spin-off.
