Our Girl Thread 56 "Stay Obsessed"

We have been discussing the series Our Girl since the first one aired in 2014 and are now on number 56! Occasionally between discussions of Our Girl, we watch the 1990s series of Soldier Soldier.

I do get the feeling that Milan’s succumbing to the ‘white girls are easy’ myth.

I do feel that was a bit of a low key episode- Elvis does look rather gorgeous after the extraction when he tries to talk to Georgie, and I like the livestock - goat, monkey etc - but it’s hardly riveting.

Yes, it was really an introductory episode with particular emphasis on Rab and Maisie. Considering how awful Maisie seems at the start, they did a good job of turning her into a bit of a sweetheart by the end of the 12 episodes - same with Rab. I think it also shows that something has changed with CJ - he's not really engaged with everything.

Yes, I seem to think that when this episode aired, I was left wondering why I had been so excited about the new series!

Well I think watching that again just reinforced the feeling of disappointment I felt with series 3 from the very start. No explanations on the Elvis/Georgie relationship considering how series 2 ended was just ridiculous. Sometimes I wonder if producers and directors really do understand that viewers actually follow stories and characters from one series to another so feel baffled and let down when left in limbo. Suppose it all harks back to no continuity in the production teams but surely TG would want his stories and characters to ring true. Gnashing of teeth here!

I did see BA's post on Instagram on Saturday and agree not at all surprised.

I think it’s rather patronising of show runners / writers not to consider that viewers are capable of analysing their stories and characters in depth unless it is the sort of ‘cult’ viewing like Twin Peaks or The Wire or similarly ‘cool’ series. Because that is what we are doing when we slag off the broccoli episodes.

Recap finishing and now Milan and Georgie are in the collapsed house. CJ looks a bit shocked and not quite with himself. He sounds a bit panicky. There are signs of PTSD.

"It's what we do!" Hmm, they do a lot of things, not all of them sensible.

Oh good grief, Georgie is singing - that is not a good sign. Very patriotic though!!
