I thought I might as well start it. As then I won't have to go searching for the new thread.

Claire. Uncharacteristic blue curtain boo boo

I just thought that blue is NOT a flamenco colour, and even if it had been the most inspired and best-tailored flamenco-type skirt in the history of flamenco, it wouldn't have looked right.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 12/06/2020 09:48

They did a similar challenge on the Spanish version of the bee and it was all red and white polka dots, smaller design on the ruffles, black trim, loads of flounce.
Is the spanish version available online, do you know?

I don't speak Spanish, but the language tailor's tacks is universal . . .

SockYarn · 12/06/2020 09:59

It is. It is called "Maestros de la Costura" .www.rtve.es/television/maestros-costura-3/

It is quite different to the bee though, much longer episodes, and more "reality show" in that they whip up tension between the contestants with team challenges, immunity from being eliminated and they give them a ridiculously short time for each challenge.

@MonsteraCheeseplant

Following SoupDragon's shenanigans on the last thread, I was surprised to notice that the actual N word was allowed to stand on the Fawlty towers thread i've been reading this morning. It was in quotation marks but still, that's incongruous. (For anyone that doesn't know what i'm talking about please refer to the last thread, Soupy isn't really incendiary.)
I had a thread in Site stuff and they did say it wasn't perfect. I think their stance always used to be to let it stand where it was appropriate (so as a quote for example) but would asterisk bits out. Otherwise it would be deleted.

It seemed you were allowed to snigger via the app so it maybe that the post you mention as posted on that and got round the automatic filtering.

You will note that we are now able to snigger with abandon again though.

@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams the film Claire mentioned was Gone with the Wind. Scarlet makes a dress out of the curtains.

I thought Claire's skirt was revolting and just looked like a pair of curtains

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 12/06/2020 11:04

As we now all know, there is an awful lot wrong with Gone With the Wind, but I think we can all agree that Scarlett aced the Transformation Challenge. The use of the tie backs alone would give her first place.

I think Clare’s skirt would have looked nice if it had been properly fitted and had the coloured net at the bottom - it was wholly unsuitable for actual flamenco dancing, but then so were Liz and Matt’s.

What's Clare's job, isn't she a lung surgeon or something? I wonder how much time they all had to take off to be on sewing bee? I'm not being goady, I'm genuinely interested.
I think Clare's great and I love her french seams and skill and adored the the lingerie set she did (apart from the enormous shorts!) But Nicole's confidence is her trump card, I wonder what next week's challenge will be?

Studycast · 12/06/2020 11:41

I agree with Schadenfreude. I was surprised that Clare or Esme thought that curtain material was suitable for the flamenco skirt challenge, even when it was just on the roll ... .

TheNavigator · 12/06/2020 11:46

I think Clare, Nicole and Liz all have fabulous personal style. My personal preference is for Nicole's style, but I am probably influenced by the fact I am a small woman, like her, so I relate to her look. But Clare and Liz both look fantastic and have a great personal aesthetic.

I think Clare is the best sewer overall so will probably win, but they would all be worthy. Matt isn't in the same league, I don't think.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 12/06/2020 11:48

I'm so pleased we can snigger with abandon. I could do with a good snigger.

Have to say Scarlett's curtain transformation, was a lot more successful than Maria's in the sound of music.

Christopher Plummer looking a lot like a very unimpressed Patrick Grant there.

BitOfFun · 12/06/2020 21:17

Willowmartha1 · 13/06/2020 09:26

Clares was a fishtail skirt no resemblance to a flamenco skirt at all !!

FeltCarrot · 13/06/2020 16:12

Possibly a silly question, but could someone with more sewing skills than me explain how Claire and Liz got such lovely scalloped hems on their blouses?

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 13/06/2020 16:14

I think they cheated/used their ingenuity by using a fabric which already had those scallops at the edges.

FeltCarrot · 13/06/2020 16:16

Ah, of course! I was thinking have they had to overstitch the scalloped edges! Doh!😂😂

Whatsnewpussyhat · 13/06/2020 16:29

That blue skirt was awful. Flamenco is fiery. Her personal style is old school librarian.

On a different note, is it just me or has Patrick started dressing like a wacky old lord of the manor. Double breasted jackets, especially worn open, are just frumpy on either sex.

Roussette · 13/06/2020 16:47

I didn't like that Patrick had on that episode. He can look divine sometimes especially when it is a lightly checked fitted jacket.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 13/06/2020 16:53

He was wearing grey and navy I think the other week, and I didn't like it. I'm not so keen on the stubble either! I liked it when he was very smart.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 13/06/2020 17:21

ThoseI love a fitted 3 piece suit. Love a waistcoat. Some men look fab in them, like Patrick (or Simon Baker in The Mentalist)

Binglebong · 13/06/2020 22:20

You're all right - I researched and the blue didn't work. Might have been a bit better if she'd hot the net in to give it shape. I was interested to see the black and white footage they had to illustrate the history of flamenco had a lady dancing with knees high in a non fitted multi layered peasant skirt. I get that things evolve but why use that clip?!

I'd like to see them make a bag in the technical challenge. It's a different skill set and I think could be really interesting. Maybe have one week of non clothing challenges ?

Binglebong · 13/06/2020 22:20

Rewatched not researched!

MrsPeacockInTheLibrary · 13/06/2020 22:22

Great to see a thread on this! I want hair tutorials on Claire's hair.

Starksforthewin · 14/06/2020 04:57

Matt doesn’t deserve to be in the final, I am rooting for the three women. Wonder if the BBC Quota Department will allow that to happen?

I’ll be sorry when the show is over. As other posters have said, it has been the highlight of lockdown.
Similarly, why can’t the BBC put all the previous series on IPlayer? Or even show them in the dead of night?

So much good product that doesn’t get repeated, yet we get endless repeats of Pointless and Escape to the bloody Country! 😀

SoupDragon · 14/06/2020 09:04

I rewatched it too and thought the history clips were odd - I don't think any were higher at the front like Nicole's.
