Jack Monroe and Matt Tebbutt BBC Kitchen Live

Starts on monday, I don't want to say anything about Jacks personality and get the thread deleted but I'm going to be interested to see how it goes. Jamie's show has been great even now he's just filming on his phone and I've picked up lots of tips - like the roasting of veg then blending to make a pasta sauce. After all of Jacks deleted tweets she's set the bar very high for herself and I'm hoping she does smash it

OP posts:

The lack of experience really shows, but that’s not insurmountable. (It does show though why she would never have been picked to do that Jamie thing.). The tech is better but still not great - I’d have expected the BBC to sort that end of things better.

WotnoPasta · 16/04/2020 21:34

I don’t understand the full body shot. I think she was cooking today so It made more sense. But being closer to the camera would help and would give less room for twitching about.

JemimaTab · 17/04/2020 00:32

Judging by her Twitter feed, she thinks the “twitching about” thing is part of the act. I’m not sold TBH.

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 17/04/2020 01:05

I’ve tried to give it a fair go. It just isn’t for me.

Twitching about just makes me think of ants in yer pants. Or crabs. Neither is an attractive prospect. Just like the show.

JemimaTab · 17/04/2020 01:27

I wonder if she has been a beneficiary of C4 media training. (Like Gordon Ramsey and his constantly jumping up and down and clapping his hands and calling everyone “big boy” 😕).

Thesearmsofmine · 17/04/2020 08:23

I’ve been watching this week and I honestly think the BBC have made an error with the show. I’m not sure who they are aiming it at? It’s a bit all the over the place and the best parts for me have been the archive recipes and the experts.

I think a daily magazine style show would have been better instead of a cooking show. They could have still had a cooking segment but alongside a segment with the doctors they are using, a gardening segment, a piece about someone who is doing something extraordinary to help others and maybe even a piece with an idea of something fun/educational to do with dc.

I am not a fan of Jack Monroe and she really did herself no favours when making a big fuss about Jamie getting the C4 show. Jamie’s show has recipes that you are simple and appealing enough that you want to cook them(and dc will want to eat them!) with lots of cooking tips thrown in and Jack has shown us how grate corned beef 🤢 and made a fuss about lemons.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/04/2020 08:54

I don't blame her for posting those Tweets, she clearly should have got that job at channel 4, it's what she's been doing for years.

Did you read the linked article? The stuff she posted was horrible. It's clear that she's lied several times. She goes on and on about being poor to beg the public for money but in truth she spent 18 months on benefits after quitting her job some years ago and most of her life has been very comfortable.

She hasn't done anything like this before at all. She's never presented on TV or even on YouTube. She isn't particularly well known.
JO has tons of relevant experience and is a household name. It's obvious why he was picked.

RuffleCrow · 17/04/2020 08:56

She's a strange one - very attractive but zero charisma. I await deletion as having opinions on Jack is Not Allowed.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/04/2020 09:04

I must say I'm getting sick of this relatively recent MN policy of 'no being mean about celebrities'.

It seems very inconsistently applied but you are right that criticism of Jack seems to attract the banhammer.

CodenameVillanelle · 17/04/2020 09:28

Jack is a mumsnetter so it's a bit different

donquixotedelamancha · 17/04/2020 09:39

Jack is a mumsnetter so it's a bit different

Ah, I didn't know that- thanks.

Christmastree43 · 17/04/2020 09:43

I find her reallt awkward and uncomfortable to watch, definitely doesn't have natural TV charisma.

Agree with the above that the show doesn't hit the spot at all, the recipes aren't really what's needed or wanted, both Matt or Jack's, although at least Matt's have a bit of joie de vivre and look edible. I do think the experts have been good, Dr Rangan and the lady on the second day had some useful and practical tips

WotnoPasta · 17/04/2020 09:57

The cooking segment was pre-recorded, so even more confused by the long shot. I’m sure the sound would be better with a closer shot, just as everyone else is doing!
I don’t think I’ve come away with anything useful from it to be honest. Whereas the bits of JO I have watched I’m coming away with some ideas for definite. It’s not working as a programme. I like Matt but I don’t think the food choices/ideas are that good.
I keep waiting for this thread to be deleted as well.

Feebot2001 · 17/04/2020 12:15

I find it painful to watch, although I have enjoyed the archive footage. Definitely going to have a go at Walton Pie.
I'll have it on in the background if I am pottering, but not going out of my way to watch.
I don't understand why the quality of sound and it cutting out only seems to effect Jack from what I've seen. Sort that out and it might be a bit more watchable

Chienloup · 17/04/2020 12:51

I watched 5 minutes of it, but with the background of Jack's awful Twitter behaviour, I just couldn't watch any more. I think Jamie Oliver is as annoying as the next person, but what she did (knowing her followers would jump on) is absolutely despicable. She posted an apology last night, and tried to blame her ADHD for her behaviour, which really struck a chord with me, as I have two autistic children and will not allow them to use their autism as an excuse for being unkind or hurting others. They are 5 and 10, Jack is an adult.
Also, she came up with some rambling about how it is hard to "grow up" in the spotlight. She was an adult when she became known, with a career in the fire service behind her, she didn't grow up in the spotlight, that's no excuse. In fact Jamie Oliver was only 24 when he got massive fame with The Naked Chef, so really no different to Jack.

JemimaTab · 17/04/2020 14:25

On Jamie: personally I find him a bit irritating and can only really take him in small doses, but I have a couple of books and like a lot of his recipes, they are normally pretty easy to do and tasty. At this point, he has a VERY long track record on TV, and plenty of other TV chefs have come and gone in the meantime. Being good at coming up with recipes and being good on TV are two very different things.
Re Jack: why on earth have they still not sorted out the tech side of things? It’s quite difficult to watch. Even if the high-up C4 partner is not helping, surely the BBC could?

Stellaris22 · 17/04/2020 14:29

I'm struggling to watch it because of the technical issues with JM. Not sure why BBC haven't sorted it yet.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 17/04/2020 14:40

I don’t understand why a celebrity’s presence on mumsnet should mean that they can’t be criticised.

I’m actually Priti Patel*. Now nobody can say mean things about me.

*I’m not - so don’t hold back on my account.

TheThingWithFeathers · 17/04/2020 14:41

Jack is meant to be going into the studio next week which would at least get round the tech issues but probably won't improve the programme much otherwise. Honestly, 90s Mary Berry and her Black Forest Gateau was the highlight for me!

PineappleDanish · 17/04/2020 14:49

Love Matt Tebbutt. He's fab on Saturday Kitchen.

Really looking forward to the Kirstie crafting programme starting on Monday too.

JemimaTab · 17/04/2020 15:04

I thought she wasn’t able to go into the studio because she’s immuno-compromised and has to stay at home? I’m sure she said this on Twitter.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 17/04/2020 15:07

I've not seen the recent SK episodes and don't really know of Jack Monroe, but I have looked up some of the recipes and they turn my stomach. Kidney bean and pineapple or chickpea and peach curry - no ta! I understand the concept of cheap eating very well (have been very poor in the past, especially as a student) but random combinations of tins is not creative or skilled cookery.

A lot of those things can be linked and not to be laughed at. Mocking mental health issues is not ok.

If this is going to turn into attacking rather than discussing the show perhaps stop posting here. I think we can tell posters here dislike JM, let's just move on.
