Starts on monday, I don't want to say anything about Jacks personality and get the thread deleted but I'm going to be interested to see how it goes. Jamie's show has been great even now he's just filming on his phone and I've picked up lots of tips - like the roasting of veg then blending to make a pasta sauce. After all of Jacks deleted tweets she's set the bar very high for herself and I'm hoping she does smash it

OP posts:

There is no getting away from the fact that JO’s programme is far more appealing. Both in presentation and the most important bit, the recipes.

This beeb show is not coming across well. And the fact that the old recipe flashbacks are the highlights mean that one person is really surplus to requirements.

I can’t see how we are not allowed to say that. It has been shocking.

BigGee · 17/04/2020 16:05

I don't understand the territorial nature of Jack's complaints. What? She is the only one allowed to do "what you have in the cupboard" cooking shows? She's the only person capable of coming up with recipes using store-cupboard ingredients and leftovers? What a load of pish. Did she lacerate HFW when he did his "Love Your Leftovers" book?

Jack's attitude just comes off as a terribly bitter AND entitled in those tweets. She didn't get the gig because they chose someone else, just as people don't get every job they apply for. The entitlement is absolutely breathtaking. Other people use tins too, love. Get over yourself.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/04/2020 16:24

A lot of those things can be linked and not to be laughed at. Mocking mental health issues is not ok.

What on earth do you base the suggestion that I am mocking mental health issues on? I listed some of the illnesses she describes having when asking for money. Most of those illnesses are physical.

If this is going to turn into attacking rather than discussing the show perhaps stop posting here. I think we can tell posters here dislike JM, let's just move on.

Fortunately MNers are not required to follow your instructions. I don't dislike the woman (I've never met her) but I don't think it's unreasonable to discuss why her recent behaviour makes her a controversial choice to front a BBC 1 food program.

The BBC used to be very strict about the ethics rules for presenters in regards to side work which would benefit from their BBC role.

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 17/04/2020 16:42

Thankfully though they have someone else fronting.

JM does not appeal to me - and even if I hadn’t seen the tweety spits and spats, I would have held the same opinion.

They may be the dogs orbs in their own head. Fine. I don’t find them watchable, engaging, informative or even a guilty watch to see car crash tv. Just a turn off.

And the tweets made me think they were in this for them and a profile.

It just feels wrong

MoreSchnitzelPlease · 17/04/2020 17:31

I think it is abundantly clear that Jack Monroe does not possess the knowledge or expertise required for this role. Matt Tebbutt tries to include Jack in the discussion, asking her for alternatives to the ingredients being used for the recipe, and she either passes the question to the guest, or shares a comment about herself. In either case, she does not, or perhaps is not able to, answer the actual questions fielded to her. How exactly is she qualified to be on this TV programme? Every guest they've had on has been brimming with ideas, and has been more than capable of sharing ideas for alternatives.

Cooking with tinned food is all well and good if you can actually buy them, but tins are so scarce at the moment. More often than not over the last month, I have been unable to buy any tinned fruit or veg, as the shelves have been completely bare. It would make much more sense to have recipes using fresh produce and different cuts of meat. I can get fresh produce in my local supermarkets, but I still cannot get tinned goods.

The corned beef chilli was utterly revolting. People who cannot afford to spend much money on food (myself included) can still have tasty and healthy meals. Not the joyless meals JM creates.

JemimaTab · 17/04/2020 19:21

I agree with that MoreSchnitzelPlease. I’d have liked to see more on what cuts of meat and what veggies are best to buy, how to make things go further given that we’re only supposed to shop when we absolutely need to, what can you/can’t you freeze, how do we make sure we eat healthy food, etc. A bit less of the sardines/corned beef type stuff which a lot of people don’t like and wouldn’t buy anyway.

On Jack’s Twitter, everything is either high drama, self pity, fishing for compliments, martyrdom, exaggeration, passive aggressive bullshit, or a combo thereof. It’s exhausting TBH.

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 17/04/2020 20:01

I hear they’ve apologised to JO, saying it was a hurt rant and not a campaign.

Which would be admirable if they hadn’t taken so long to do it.

Still now JO has gone for a well deserved rest They will not have the competition to worry about any more.

Still won’t make them become popular or get more viewers though.

The damage has been done I fear.

JemimaTab · 17/04/2020 20:05

It was rather more than a rant. It was a large number of Tweets over a period of several days (now conveniently deleted, of course).

PineappleDanish · 17/04/2020 20:09

This use of "they" when talking about Jack Monroe makes it sound like Matt tebutt was in on the twitter rant, as they is plural. Given the title of the thread it's ambiguous.

Afaik Jack monroe refers to herself as "she".

CodenameVillanelle · 17/04/2020 20:15

Jack Monroe was a 'they' for about 5 minutes. She then posted on Twitter that she is a woman and got pilloried by trans twitter. The correct and acceptable pronouns for her are female ones.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/04/2020 20:19

This thread certainly will get pulled if we are seen to invalidate JM's non-singular status. As PP says, she is no longer plural, so it's best to avoid discussion of her pronouns. I think the only reason this is still up is because people are focused on facts.

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 17/04/2020 20:20

Apologies. At work we’ve been told to use they if we can so we don’t offend anyone. Sorry for any confusion.

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 17/04/2020 20:21

And once in that habit it can be a bugger to come out of it.

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 17/04/2020 20:23

She apologised. But way too late and after way too much said. So not really impulsive ranting to me. And certainly not an impulsive apology to my mind. It was way too considered.

CodenameVillanelle · 17/04/2020 20:27

At work we’ve been told to use they if we can so we don’t offend anyone

I'd be well offended if someone used 'they' about me when it was clear I'm female. This is very bad guidance.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/04/2020 20:32

Sorry for any confusion.

No apology needed, she's been inconsistent about it. I would not even mention it if MN weren't trigger happy on JM threads.

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 17/04/2020 20:33

I didn’t say I liked it Sad

But maybe enough said on that and back to topic. Smile

Like a op said, I’d prefer to be told what I can freeze, what is in season, what things are available/scarce. What we can substitute for common ingredients.

Not 1001 things to do with a tin of chickpeas, a lettuce and a foot of wool.

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 17/04/2020 20:35

Sorry that last one was to Villanelle.

And yes Don, inconsistency from one week to the next is what triggered that at work.

I shall shut my pie hole now. Smile

WickedlyPetite · 17/04/2020 20:36

She may have deleted the tweets about JO but they're out out there, people saw them, plenty of people screenshot them, there were a number of them over the space of a week or more so hardly impulsive, and no amount of back-pedalling will erase them.

I wonder what's caused today's twitter outpouring. I thought the other guest chef today, Paul, wore his thoughts fully on his face during a lot of interaction with her Grin and wondered whether, when these guests are being asked onto the show, they're telling the BBC exactly what they think of her.

Does she not have even one sensible person in her life to tell her to get the hell off Twitter, and that just because a thought passes through her head it doesn't always need to be put out there.

I actually love that JO hasn't even dignified any of it with even the hint of any kind of acknowledgement.

Back to the food, I thought the peach pastry thing today looked nice - well Matt's did anyway, hers looked like she hadn't glazed the pastry and it was a bit anaemic.

TheFlis12345 · 17/04/2020 20:45

Is it just me or does Matt really not like her? Even DH noticed that he always comes across as a bit exasperated and short with her, I can see why!

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 17/04/2020 20:48

Not just you.

WickedlyPetite · 17/04/2020 20:52

I think Matt's like that with everyone, he has quite a snappy sarky 'banter' but he can take it as well as he dishes it out.

Fear not though, Jack's fans have given him plenty a hard time on Twitter.

GrimmsFairytales · 17/04/2020 20:53

he always comes across as a bit exasperated and short with her, I can see why!

It's becoming more obvious by the day. He would do much better presenting on his own, with the different guests. I don't feel she's actually adding anything to the show.

KaronAVyrus · 17/04/2020 20:58

I just don’t think JM is cut out for for TV. I saw her for the first time this morning and felt she wasn’t bringing anything to the party, at best she was average.
Why the BBC decided to hire her after her bizarre behaviour on twitter is anyone’s guess.
Maybe Matt is worried about getting on the wrong side of her?

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 17/04/2020 21:01

Looking at Matt’s twitter, I think he’s just fine at batting off gobshites when the need arises. Grin
