Race Across the World series 2

I loved this show last year and was very excited to see a trailer yesterday that seemed to show series 2 was coming soon and was located in the Americas? But Googling it has revealed absolutely nothing! I thought I'd start this thread so that fellow fans have a place to comment when we have more info.

If it is the Americas, it will stop the contestants just copying last year's journeys, although I must admit I think the Europe/Asia route will prove more interesting as there's such a great variation in cultures as you travel east. But I don't know much about South America so looking forward to being wrong, and I'm sure it will be just as exciting as the last series. It'll be the people that make it - loved Darron and Alex from last year and their changing relationship/bond!

Hmm
BlindedByThe · 03/05/2020 20:24

On now.....I forgot and have just remembered and started watching

BlindedByThe · 03/05/2020 20:25

They're sitting around a table together recapping it seems and revisiting the scenes

ILoveYou3000 · 03/05/2020 20:33

You can see the difference in their personalities when they're not stressed.

ILoveYou3000 · 03/05/2020 20:45

Oh! Now, I'm in tears. Jo is an absolute inspiration.

Honeyroar · 03/05/2020 20:49

Yes really sad about Jo. 🙁

Not that surprised that the first couple to drop out split up!

I’m enjoying this programme,

CashewNut11 · 03/05/2020 21:22

I did a quick search about the final hotel (it wasn't there when I was in Ushuia 13 years ago!) and I think that final bus was a shuttle bus.

So very upset about Jo, just wish her the all the best.

Honeyroar · 03/05/2020 21:29

Ah @CashewNut11 thanks, that explains why they didn’t need money. Although you’d think it would have taken them to the hotel if it was a shuttle.

purpleme12 · 03/05/2020 21:30

Yes so very sad about Jo I really hope it goes for her

SleepingStandingUp · 03/05/2020 21:34

Waaaaaah watching now and just saw about Jo. Wonder if that's the point she thought fuck it, blow the budget on fun and let's enjoy it

NCTDN · 03/05/2020 22:10

Poor Jo.
How do you know that shuntelle and whatshisface split up?

SleepingStandingUp · 03/05/2020 22:41

They said so in the last episode

BlindedByThe · 03/05/2020 22:50

My personal feeling is that this series, though excellent, was too drawn out by at least 2 episodes including tonight's.
I enjoyed revisiting it tonight but all in all that's just too many hours of my time and they dragged the contestants unnecessarily across country, it was expensive and just too long. But that's just me, I even find an hour of any one show just a bit too long. (In my defence I have small kids and limited time/ energy). I think the first series just had 6 episodes, I preferred that.
The back stories this time were better, more was made of them, but they did get repetitive. And though they were my favourites, I don't think I really understood Emon's big reveal to Jamuil about went he distanced himself from the family to marry the woman he wanted and travel and do his own thing. Was this really news to Jamuil?

Bunnybigears · 03/05/2020 23:01

Well I have just watched Series 1 and I quite liked the winners.

SleepingStandingUp · 04/05/2020 00:08

I'm assuming that the older ones in the family were so disgusted in Emon going off to marry some random woman that it became a THING WE DON'T TALK ABOUT. SoJ would have said why can't we see Uncle Emin and Dad would have said WE WILL NOT TALK ABOUT THST IN THIS HOUSE.
Emin and Jamil are prob closer in age than Emin and Jamil Dad so guessing that generation difference made a big deal to attitudes towards marriage. Perhaps there was a screaming row over it and things got said and it turned into a DO NOT MENTION HIS NAME TO ME thing. I'd love to know how they got back in touch and why Emon didn't just say that first time, here's the whe story.

BlindedByThe · 04/05/2020 11:23

I know what you mean, Sleeping. They have clearly been un-estranged for some time before going on the show, I mean you wouldn't think "I wonder why we never see Uncle Emon. I know, I'll apply to go on a tv show with him and find out".
And presumably the whole family are now un-estranged, otherwise Jamuil would now be the one who's disowned for going off travelling with someone they don't speak to.
I get that they were estranged at some point and missed years together. And as I say, they were my favourites and I'm not trying to be nit-picky, but it does make feel very much like this had to be their angle right now. A big very clearly defined and oft-repeated angle/usp with every couple. Actually the couple of friends from Series 1 who got eliminated are the only ones who didn't have a big angle other than they had gone travelling together tears ask too, that was enough of an angle for me actually. Just felt more natural.

BlindedByThe · 04/05/2020 11:25

*tears ask too = years ago too

purpleme12 · 04/05/2020 11:32

I agree about the whole big reveal not being a big reveal with Eamon and Jamil. It annoyed me. And also it annoyed me about all the couples repeating themselves about their back story but I know that was more the Tele people.

sanealaddin · 04/05/2020 12:33

I enjoyed the last episode and felt very sad for Jo. I can see now why she chose to focus on making it the most enjoyable experience possible rather than on winning.

I still hate the idea that it all came down to who could run fastest at the end. It shouldn't be about the fittest pair winning, it should be about their skill and tactics and how they managed their money to get there first.

ACupOfCoffee · 04/05/2020 12:49

I think the producers went far too heavy on estranged/strained relationships in series two.

Darron and Alex in series one really seemed to capture everyone's imagination with their rekindled relationship, so I get the impression this time around the production team thought, "that worked, let's do that again, but more so!", but when four out of the five couples had some sort of relationship issue to work through, it felt a bit tiresome at times.

But that's not to say I didn't like them all in their own way as couples, just that a bit of balance would be appreciated. I liked the younger female friends in series 1 - they hadn't fallen out, just that life and families had got in the way, and now it was their time to focus on themselves.

I felt it was a real shame that Shuntelle and Michael didn't go further as I'd really like to have seen how she developed and gained confidence during the journey.

StCharlotte · 04/05/2020 14:08

As an aside, "Shuntelle" is a good lesson in not giving kids' names "yoonique" spellings - it looks hideous written down.

I do think it's a shame that everyone has to have a back story.

Honeyroar · 04/05/2020 14:21

Was that really her name?

ACupOfCoffee · 04/05/2020 14:32

Yes, that is her name www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/profiles/4QLhQ8XmXNz7HGvMp8KskWG/shuntelle-and-michael

I agree that they don't all need to have a backstory; the adventure they go on during the journey should be enough.

The 'big reveal' between Emon and Jamiul was so set up. Almost as if there was a bit of time available, it was a lovely setting, so the camera person asked them to have the conversation.

MaggieFS · 04/05/2020 21:35

Just got around to watching the last episode. It was ok, but I was really hoping for a lot more new info from it, and a lot less repetition from the series.

I also had to look up the hotel in Ushuaia - definitely wasn't there when I was, but I wouldn't have been able to afford it anyway, I expect!

So so try to hear about Jo, but love her spirit.

I thought at one point Lizzie said something about now living in Austria but I didn't hear that properly. What's she doing?

Agree with pp on the spelling of Shuntelle, I remember thinking that earlier in the series. Thought she and ex came across very well, hope they continue to be friends and happy.

Bawdrip · 04/05/2020 21:39

We just watched the last one. I'm surprised at the comments on Jen, my whole family were rooting for Jen and Rob. I thought she was hysterical. I bet she's a great friend, lots of fun. My boys thought she was very funny. I was gutted for her at the end, no wonder she's still not over it! Jo was fab too. Hope she recovers and gets to travel more. Great series, really ignited a desire to travel with my family one day. Well done to all of them
