Race Across the World series 2

I loved this show last year and was very excited to see a trailer yesterday that seemed to show series 2 was coming soon and was located in the Americas? But Googling it has revealed absolutely nothing! I thought I'd start this thread so that fellow fans have a place to comment when we have more info.

If it is the Americas, it will stop the contestants just copying last year's journeys, although I must admit I think the Europe/Asia route will prove more interesting as there's such a great variation in cultures as you travel east. But I don't know much about South America so looking forward to being wrong, and I'm sure it will be just as exciting as the last series. It'll be the people that make it - loved Darron and Alex from last year and their changing relationship/bond!

Maybe not just Scandinavia, but a circuit of the Baltic would be fun. They could start and end in Copenhagen and take in Scandinavia, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, etc. Costs might be an issue, though.

porkochop · 28/04/2020 07:41

With regards to Jen crying too- she also sobbed loads when jo and Sam left, I think she's just a crier! Which isn't a bad thing.

Altuve · 28/04/2020 08:06

I think the right team won in the end, but I have to admit I was gutted for Jen & Rob. Yes, she didn’t always come across as the kindest person, esp to Rob, but I think she’s just lacking a little wisdom and maturity, and actually, in their short marriage (they’re still young) they have experienced some trauma and that changes you.

I felt desperately sorry for them at the end and I have to say, it was the only time in the whole series where I felt that the producers fixed it to be unfair.

  • The boys had no money left - that was clear when they had to barter to pay for their taxi - so how did they afford the bus at the end?
  • Why did they have to get a bus? Why couldn’t they have paid for a taxi if they had the money for one? Jen and Rob certainly had the cash and it seemed very unfair to stop them from using it.
  • I understand a final “race” but I felt it very unfair that it had to be so physical. Last year’s final race element was a good twist, and it relied on them using cash - one of the elements of the race the whole way through - but this one was purely physical and that definitely put some teams at a disadvantage. (Jo wouldn’t have managed it either.)
thetoddleratemyhomework · 28/04/2020 09:25

Ha, well I know Jen and Rob (as i said earlier in the thread) and was a bit gutted for them, but they are totally fine with having come second and regard the whole thing as a real achievement (particularly the last leg - the last bit was so gruelling at altitude that their medic was throwing up trying to get up the hill after them, so I think Jen was absolutely totally spent at the end).

I haven't had a chance to ask why they didn't just go large and try to gain other advantages, like people suggested. I shall ask - suspect a lot of rules were given to teams to try to provide for a close finish. I know for a fact that Rob and Jen don't see the finish as unfair - they know it is not the Olympics, it is a TV programme that is meant to entertain.

Yes, they probably would have done up their house with the cash rather than donating it - it is a lot of money to them at this stage of their lives. Clearly that isn't the same as Emon and Jamiul donating the cash, which is a wonderful thing to do ( particularly Jamiul as Emon is clearly quite well off - it costs a lot to climb Everest).

SleepingStandingUp · 28/04/2020 09:30

I don't see what's wrong with Jen and Rob using it to decorate Tbh, I mean Emin and Jamil only decided to donate it in Sao Paulo, who knows what they were gonna use it for otherwise. Jo and Sam were using it on a car after Sam wrote off his last one. God knows what the siblings would have spent it on. I don't think there's a less worthy use for the money except obvs for giving 75% to charity

MrsWhites · 28/04/2020 10:06

@Altuve I also wondered why they specified using a bus when Jen and Rob obviously could have afforded a taxi, I felt they had managed their money well and therefore should have been able to use that to their advantage. Also wondered how the boys could afford the bus!

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 28/04/2020 10:43

Absolutely nothing wrong with decorating the house, it’s exactly the kind of thing I’d do myself, it’s just not the kind of goal that puts audiences on the edge of their seat saying “gosh I really hope they get the money and don’t have to live with brown carpets any more”.

purpleme12 · 28/04/2020 10:51

Yes I also wondered how they afforded the bus if they didn't have money

Honeyroar · 28/04/2020 11:04

I don’t think it matters what they want to spend the money on. It was a lovely thing that the boys did, but I wouldn’t want the show to be about that, where every contestant has a sob story or charity.

TreeTopTim · 28/04/2020 14:48

I was a bit annoyed that they won..

They were nice guys but as others have said they had no money so how did they manage your get a bus? They also looked like they didn't need the money so giving it away wouldn't have been a problem for them.

I don't get the hate for Jen. I did find her a bit annoying at the beginning but Rob was a bit of an arse to her.

peppermintcapsules · 28/04/2020 16:06

Sam needed to be on medication. I will never understand why so many with that condition go unmedicated in the UK. It makes such a difference! My son used to struggle so much. I'll never understand why people are left to struggle when there might be a way of helping them.

The winners of series 1 were gits, really smug and gloating and gave boomers a bad name.

Cambionome · 28/04/2020 16:40

No spoilers about the winners of series 1!! Haven't finished watching it yet.

Think I might have guessed

MaryMaryContrary · 28/04/2020 16:43

Given that the winners donated half of their winnings to South American charities, I was happy with the result.

StCharlotte · 28/04/2020 17:01

Nicked from another forum:

The BBC was just about to start filming on a celebrity version of the show before the coronavirus pandemic hit featuring Gregg Wallace, Marcus Brigstocke, Dave Benson Phillips and Annie Lennox.

Cambionome · 28/04/2020 17:04

Thank God we won't have to look at Greg Wallace even more than we already do...

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 28/04/2020 17:13

Greg Wallace. Thank the lord covid has at least protected us from that. Don’t know why the beeb thinks he’s popular. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Bunnybigears · 28/04/2020 17:39

How are people watching Series 1? I couldnt get it on IPlayer.

Extracurricularfatigue · 28/04/2020 17:48

Sam needed to be on medication. I will never understand why so many with that condition go unmedicated in the UK. It makes such a difference!

Jo said at one point that he had been on medication but preferred not to be. If he has FAS he would still have problems anyway even if his ADHD was medicated.

ILoveYou3000 · 28/04/2020 17:55

@Bunnybigears it's definitely on iplayer but after the current series.

peppermintcapsules · 28/04/2020 17:57

Oh, did he have FAS as well? I'm glad my son prefers his medication, he really struggles without and says he doesn't like how he is without it as it really puts off people socially and he wants to have friends (he has HFA as well). His ADHD actually effected him far more than his HFA. Tbh, I wouldn't want to be around him much without his ADHD medication. He was fucking awful without it Sad.

Extracurricularfatigue · 28/04/2020 18:03

My son also has ADHD and HFA and we were discussing how he would find the race last night. I would really love to know - his ASD means he has extremely narrow interests so blowing that apart (and parting him from his phone and computer) would either make his life or deeply traumatise him.

peppermintcapsules · 28/04/2020 19:46

Yeah, it's interesting, Extra. My son finds his life much improved on his meds, but he did go abroad for treatment and so was able to easily try various meds until finding the one that really worked for him and personally, he finds it a game changer. He would really like to do a long route so we're hoping to do one within his scope of interest maybe next year or the year after, providing both his ADHD and his OCD, which is also now well-controlled with medication, remain stable. Personally, we're pro-medication. I think, however, a long but planned route would better suit him as this one means a lot of sharp, quick changes to plan that might not suit him well. We're hoping for a long route (the Via Francegena from Canterbury to Rome) during his gap year in 2022 but with plenty of planning and a good cushion of savings in case we need to bail quickly).

But he was also not adopted and does not have FAS (boak, I couldn't bear the taste of alcohol, and I conceived him right after an ERPC for MMC so did not drink at all whilst conceiving him or after). FAS would definitely be a real factor for Sam. He did well.

MaggieFS · 28/04/2020 20:22

@thetoddleratemyhomework As and when you can, please do ask them these behind the scenes qs and let us know! Also do they get completely free choice on routes or do things ever get suggested?

MrsWhites · 29/04/2020 08:04

Those of you who have watched the American version, where are you watching that please?

kingkuta · 29/04/2020 08:24

Great ending to the show. So happy that Emon & Jamiul won, and lovely touch that they donated half the winnings to charity. Bit gutted for Dom and Lizzie. If there had been a bus on that last leg they would have finished a day ahead of everyone, they did so well to get to that point, having to stay overnight must have been gutting.
I dont think I've ever come across anyone as irritating as Jen on TV. I have no idea how Rob puts up with her on a daily basis. She came across as really quite unpleasant. Every show was peppered with 'God shes so annoying' from the whole family Grin
