Loving the timewarp of watching this as a 50+ person but also appreciating the effort put into creating a much more realistic background atmosphere than today's supposedly purpose built, but actually more hollow version.

Patch23042 · 12/07/2020 00:11

I don’t remember Fiona owning the business. I also don’t remember the ghost story. I don’t recall Judy being as pretty as she was, either.

Bloody Kevin and his “dinner” and “tea”.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 12/07/2020 00:49

I was pretty amazed to hear the internet mentioned (by Fiona's brother) considering that these episodes are from 1996!

I don't think I'd even heard of the internet until about 2000.

And why didn't she just ask her brother for a loan first? Then we could have avoided that unpleasant scene with Rita.

peakygal · 12/07/2020 01:10

Absolutely love watching the old ones again. I miss Jack and Vera so much! Amazing characters. Vera trying to contact Ivy's spirit hahahaha brilliant! And is it just me but does Roy seem to have an accent that's different to how he talks now and he seems so much softer and kinder in the new ones. Don't like the older Roy scenes

Patch23042 · 12/07/2020 07:45

Yes, there’s something sinister about younger Roy I think. I stopped watching CS two years ago - at the time, Carla was one of his best friends, which wouldn’t have happened in 1996.

I think that Stephen looks quite a lot like Ben Price (Nick).

Just realised.....Roy had no truck with the afterlife when Hayley was terminally ill.

x2boys · 12/07/2020 12:47

People are just starting to have mobile phones,I remember my housemates Dad having one in around 1995 and we thought it was so exoctic😂

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 12/07/2020 13:13

Was a bit Hmm🤔 that the headline in the paper, next to Jack and Vera's photo, had absolutely nothing to do with the supposed haunted pub story.

Also, when Audrey came into the café to show Gail the family portrait, the table lamps in the photo were switched off.

The lamps in the actual scene, when the photo was taken, were definitely on.

Are standards slipping already....?

thenightsky · 12/07/2020 13:15

I was thinking that about Roy too. In modern Corrie he's very anti-woo and would have no truck with hauntings at all.

x2boys · 13/07/2020 19:23

Well Jim is just vile isn't he? And whilst I absolutely don't condone the violence ,why was Liz flirting with Johnny ,she knows Jims a paranoid ,aggressive drunk yet shes,s laughing and fluttering her eyelashes at Johnny, they are a toxic couple and where did that car come from that Liz was driving?

justthecat · 13/07/2020 19:51

Absolutely agree, couldn’t stand either Jim or liz today, noticed they edited him having his hand round her throat and her flung on ground

x2boys · 13/07/2020 19:59

Yes I though they must have edited a scene or two out.

Ontheboardwalk · 13/07/2020 22:00

Don’t know if it was different back in the day but wasn’t 19:30 before the watershed? Why is showing the same scene 15:00 any different?

I think I’d stopped watching Corrie by then but do remember this scene and how it set all the upcoming storylines up

StillCoughingandLaughing · 14/07/2020 00:30

They definitely edited it. I think different rules apply for daytime compared to the prime time watershed.

Why is Ken’s nanny being young a storyline in its own right? No wonder ratings began slipping around this time.

justthecat · 14/07/2020 05:47

Did love Jacks t shirts 👻

x2boys · 14/07/2020 10:01

Yes I don't know why, kens nanny being young is such a problem for the neighbours ,loads of girls I went to went to school.with did childcare courses, and she seems very sensible almost fuddy duddy.

SapatSea · 14/07/2020 10:28

I also don't understand the fuss about the young nanny or about Ken parenting Daniel "on his own." Lots of teenage babysitters and teenage mums in Emily's day.

The scene with Jim and Liz was edited quite badly. Jim is just so vile, a real drunken bore. Liz is so much more glamourous than when the McD's first appeared, Alec Gilroy wasn't keen to have her as a barmaid back then.

The car Liz and Jim were driving was Andy's, Jim borrowed it. I didn't know Liz could drive.

Apart from Maxine all the young people seem quite fuddy duddy (Vicky, Fiona etc) just a few years back there used to be more fun with Kevin and Sally having parties, group nights out etc.

eggandonion · 14/07/2020 11:00

Vicky looks like she has been wafted in from World War Two, were she as friendly with Princess Lilibet. The t shirts are great!

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 14/07/2020 11:09

Yes, Liz can drive.

She once borrowed Rita's car to bring Steve back from the Lake District when he and Vicky ran away together (quite some time ago now)

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 14/07/2020 11:15

At least, I think it was Vicky! But I could be wrong.

It could have been Angie Freeman's little sister Confused

Or even some other girl - there have been so many......!!

eggandonion · 14/07/2020 11:47

They can all drive and a lot have secret cars; driving lessons are only for hilarious comedy purposes.
Peter or Carla should teach Our Si to drive and moan about insurance on a VW Up.

eggandonion · 14/07/2020 11:48

(Obviously in the future, Our Si doesn't exist yet).

x2boys · 14/07/2020 12:03

Angie Freeman has a,little sisterConfused?

x2boys · 14/07/2020 12:22

Was it not TracyLuv,Steve ran away to the lake district with?I don't think I was following classic Corrie at the timw ,but I think I may have a vague and distant original memory of it?

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 14/07/2020 12:49

Just done a bit of googling.

It was Flick Khan's sister that ran off with Steve to the Lakes!

Flick was Angie's housemate (and fellow student) when they were renting Rita's house.

x2boys · 14/07/2020 13:13

He's always been a bit of a sod with the ladies that SteveHmm
