I'm so looking forward to seeing this when it returns next Sunday!

There's been loads of interviews with Prince Philip over the years! Several of them .

SpiderCharlotte · 19/11/2019 09:36

Absolutely loved episode 7, Moondust. Tobias Menzies is wonderful.

Deadringer · 19/11/2019 10:19

Delighted with all the Menzies praise on here, I have been a fan since he was in Persuasion. I have only watched two so far but not loving oc so far as the queen, her 'serious' face is very dour, and she is just a little too common for the role imo. I love her in other things so I am disappointed.

SpiderCharlotte · 19/11/2019 10:22

I quite like OC, but Tobias Menzies is without doubt shining in this role. I don't remember seeing him in much before but I will definitely look out for more of him.

I don't want to watch the last three episodes because I don't want it to finish. Grin

Mid-40s, no connection to Wales, but knew of Aberfan. Read something about it in English class in secondary school, then the recent 50th anniversary. Heart breaking.

Not only the individual pain, but that of a whole community. Parents whose children survived getting death threats about their children. I can't even begin to imagine what it must have been like.

WaningGibbous · 19/11/2019 10:44

Tobias Menzies is knocking it out of the park, so far (ep5)

Was that Colin Morgan's real accent as John Armstrong?

It seems more gossipy than S1&2.

SpiderCharlotte · 19/11/2019 11:00

Just finished Episode 8. Derek Jacobi is sublime as you would expect. What a wonderful performance.

Fairylea · 19/11/2019 11:49

TM is outstanding as Phillip. I didn’t think anyone could top Matt Smith but he’s so good!

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/11/2019 11:53

@SpiderCharlotte Tobias M is in almost everything!

Thesuzle · 19/11/2019 11:54

Blast, i ripped through it all in two days.
No OC was not as good as Foy and HBC is not a patch on what’s her name the first PM
The last episode was touching though, OC’s face as she goes off on the Jubilee tour was so sad

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 19/11/2019 12:06

To me, TM's defining role will always be Edmure Tully, being useless at archery and having most of his family wiped out at his own wedding. He was also one of the judges in the "public enquiry" episode of The Thick of It, which is worth seeking out. He was once filming something in my home city and I may or may not have spent time hanging around the roped-off bits of the town centre where they were shooting, hoping to catch a glimpse - but I never did. I'm glad to see him getting more of a leading role and getting the chance to exercise more range.

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/11/2019 12:25

@EoinMcLovesCakeJumper I walked past him on the South Bank many years ago. Back then I only knew him from the series Rome. For me his defining role will always been the hideous yet complex Black Jack Randall from Outlander!

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/11/2019 12:25

be, not been!

RuffleCrow · 19/11/2019 12:50

For me TM almost seems like he's doing an impersonation of the D of E for comic effect rather than acting. It's too much.

SenecaFalls · 19/11/2019 13:12

Tobias Menzies is excellent in The Crown. For those of you who are big fans of his but have not seen Outlander, I highly recommend it. There are some very harrowing scenes but his portrayal of two characters, one from the 18th Century and one from the 20th is an acting tour-de-force.

But my favorite aspect of the current season of The Crown is Princess Anne. Erin Doherty is perfection. I imagine that is exactly the way Anne was (and is) in real life. I especially liked the scene where Philip chides her for being so direct and forthright and she comes back with "Where do you suppose I got that from?" I also like that her relationship with Charles is depicted as affectionate. They are very different, but I have always imagined that they get on fine in real life.

As for Olivia Colman, I really like her but I have the same criticism that I had with Claire Foy. From all accounts, the Queen is much warmer, funnier, and more animated in private than either of these actresses have portrayed her. There doesn't seem to be a lot of differentiation between the public and private personas.

Andylion · 19/11/2019 14:15

Delighted with all the Menzies praise on here, I have been a fan since he was in Persuasion.

Wait, what? he was Persuasion? Which version!

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/11/2019 14:22

I have a theory that almost every British actor currently working has been in either The Crown, Downton or Game of Thrones! Sometimes even two of those, though I can't think of anyone who's been in all three.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 19/11/2019 14:33

QueenOfTheAndals I don't think there has been, but as The Crown has more series left to go, it could still happen. We just need someone who has been in both Downton and GoT to be given a role. There's Iain Glen, Rose Leslie and James Faulkner that I can think of - who do we reckon they could play in The Crown? Perhaps Rose Leslie could be Fergie, what with her ginger hair...

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 19/11/2019 14:41

I found PC answering back quite shocking, until I remembered that he was speaking to his mother, who happens to be the Queen, and not the other way round!

Like a PP, I'm beginning to find it a bit "miniseries-like". Also a bit uncomfortable viewing. Perhaps because we are getting into territory that many of us recognise, as opposed it being to a sort of historical reenactment.

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/11/2019 14:42

Iain Glen could be Earl Spencer and James Faulkner Major Ron Ferguson - sorted!

SenecaFalls · 19/11/2019 14:54

Iain Glen could be President Gerald Ford when the Queen comes to the US for the Bicentennial.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 19/11/2019 15:13

With a hairpiece, it strikes me that Iain Glen could also make a good Michael Heseltine. I see what you mean about James Faulkner but he would need fake eyebrows to the point where it would look unintentionally comical before he could be Major Ron! Maybe Jacques Chirac?

Andylion · 19/11/2019 15:24

Tobias M is in almost everything!

He's even in an episode of my favourite show, The Thick of It.

Andylion · 19/11/2019 15:26

Oops. EoinMcLovesCakeJumper got there before me.

KitMarlowesCodpieceOfThigh · 19/11/2019 15:35

@Andylion The Rupert Penry-Jones Sally Hawkins one - it was on ITV, I think, about ten years ago.
