Can’t wait till it airs tomorrow -I’m kidding myself if I think it’ll be anything other than a binge!
Trying really hard to keep an open mind about the new cast, but they have one hell of a hard act to follow

Claire Foy was amazing, wish they'd use make up or something to age her. Find OC so annoying

We had a little fantasy of hunkering down for the day, ordering takeaway and watching the lot. But sadly we have a house full of kids, chores to do and friends for lunch. TV currently showing an LOL unboxing on YouTube...

Enjoying episode 1, Tobias Menzies is great particularly

Enjoyed the first episode. I think Menzies stole the show. I found Wilson more interesting than Margaret.

I've watched the first three and agree that Tobias Menzies is very good as Philip. I'm struggling with HBC as Princess Margaret as she looks too old to pass as mid-30s, looks nothing like PM and is too familiar to me from her other roles.

The third episode about the Aberfan tragedy in 1966 and the Queen's reaction to it is horribly sad.

I've watched episode one. I am hoping I can pace myself a bit and only watch an episode a day. I am not sure I am liking the new cast. Tobias Menzies is great, but I never really believed in Olivia Colman and she certainly hasn't captured the voice or demeanour of the queen. HBC always seems to play the same character in whatever she is in. She is a closer match for Vanessa Kirby than OC is for CF, but still not as good as VK. I appreciate they are going to cover the next 20 years of their lives, but both actresses currently look too old for their characters.

Also, now it is in 1964 it is within my lifetime. I am wondering if seeing events and people I remember as opposed to events and people from before my time, means the whole story has lost some of its appeal.

Watching S3 S1 now. Fantastic.

It took me a while to adjust to the new cast but actually, now I think it was absolutely the right decision. OC and HBC and TM each bring something additional to their roles that their predecessors couldn't have: decades of additional life experience. If i wasn't approaching 40 myself I don't think i'd fully appreciate that.

Ive just watched episode 1 and came on to say how good I think the new Philip is. I loved Matt Smith in the first two series and was worried he was irreplacable, but actually I was very pleasantly surprised.

They do all look slightly too old at the moment, but as the series goes on it was adjust im sure as the previous cast would have been too young to pass as parents to adult Prince Charles and Princess Ann.

Wilson is interesting, Ive heard those spy rumours about him before but in all honesty I just think the establishment in this country are shit scared of socialism. He was very well thought of and remembered by my late grandparents, honest hard working class people who'd lived through WW2 and under Churchill...

Just about to begin episode 2.
I think they have absolutely nailed it with the casting. Olivia Colman is a trillion times better than Clare Foy who I just sat watching thinking "who does she think she's playing?" Philip is a trillion times better than Matt Smith who I have decided just plays the same "I'm mad me" egocentric twat in everything. Harold Wilson is divine. HBC possibly weakest link as tbh, slap a wand in her mitts and she's still Bellatrix.
Much more interesting period of history for me as well as I can remember most of it!

The thing about Claire Foy was - she seemed to have the Queen's public persona down brilliantly - the calm, collected stoical figure, but even at moments of high emotion we only got a glimpse of the emotional state beneath. Olivia Colman is giving us more of an interpretation of the humam being beneath the composure, i think (then again that's what OC does).

I was born in 1951 & still found the first 2 series gripping Smile (though I did have some serious niggles about historical accuracy of petty minor details!)

The Aberfan episode is excellent isn't it?

This is interesting. (Esp the comparison with Diana’s death.)

Terrible that they’ve never had counselling until now.

Currently watching episode five.

Is it just me or does Tobias Menzies as Price Philip almost sound like Prince Charles?

Cried my eyes out over the Aberfan episode.

On the plus side of all that binge watching I have done all my ironing.

I'm just onto episode 4. Loving Princess Anne's unimpressed attitude to just about everything, and the brief glimpse of Barbara Castle.

I'm not sure about HBC yet - for one thing, she's almost ten years older than OC so not a very convincing younger sister. I'm not really seeing her as Margaret in the way I did Vanessa Kirby.

Only on Episode 2 BUT Vanessa Kirby was MUCH better than HBC she drops the clipped old school upper class accent in favour of what is essentially her own voice

Christ the Aberfan episode, I've only started it and it's devastatingly sad

Report
MrsGrindah · 17/11/2019 19:26

I think HBC is hopelessly miscast. She’s not even trying to capture the essence of Margaret and looks nothing like her. They’d have been better off casting an unknown actress ( I always thought Claire Foy looked more like Margaret rather than Queenie but she completely captured her). OC is trying but her voice is too distinctive.

I've watched the first two. We're definitely within my memory now. I can remember being taken to a railway bridge to watch the train carrying Winston Churchill's body to Oxfordshire for his funeral - there was a small crowd paying their respects. I can remember the disapproval of Princess M's carrying on and the excitement at Wilson being elected. My teacher in top juniors (yr6) took us to watch TV in the dinner hall so we could see HW standing on the steps of number 10. Not seen the Aberfan episode yet but remember the tragedy very clearly.
