I'm so looking forward to seeing this when it returns next Sunday!

I was born in the late 70s, nowhere near Wales, and had heard of Aberfan from when I was small. There were a number of special programmes about it a couple of years ago when it was the 50th anniversary. I am quite surprised that it's not in the public consciousness any more, I just assumed it was one of those things everyone knew about.

VanyaHargreeves · 18/11/2019 21:47

I think....

My DM told me about it when we were listening to the Bee Gees New York Mining Disaster 1941

Have You Seen My Wife, Mr Jones?

Claricethecat45 · 18/11/2019 21:47

I am bingeing
OC doesn't really appeal and NBC looks like she's in drag. Aberfan episode was heartbreaking though. I have just watched Investiture and cannot believe how revolting Queen was to Charles- explains so much - she is not a likeable character - I have no idea of course if its anything close to true reflection but it shows her in an appalling context

southeastdweller · 18/11/2019 21:50

Mid 70s person here, brought up not far from Wales but I'd never heard of Aberfan until I read last month that the recent Channel 4 show The Accident was partly inspired by it.

Their relationship was always alleged to be quite poor and has only mended post Di...

Imagine that your mothers death begins your career... Imagine looking at your son and knowing that for him to reach his potential in life you have to cark it and will never witness it

That leads to weirdness, I'd imagine, which has mellowed as they are both so long lived.

BestIsWest · 18/11/2019 22:02

I am amazed that people have never heard of Aberfan. It’s only 3 years since the 50th anniversary and that was covered extensively by ITV Sky, BBC, the newspapers etc. I acknowledge that growing up and living in Wales it has always been in my consciousness and it may not be the same for people in other parts of the country.

GiantKitten · 18/11/2019 22:05

Look at what she said on his 70th birthday - it is a privilege to live long enough to see your child grow up!

Fredy45 · 18/11/2019 22:24

Just mentioned Aberfan to dh (50) and he didn't recall the name but when I told home what it was he knew. My DF was a valleys boy and grew up 10 miles away from there - he was at uni by then but my grandparents and extended family knew people in the village so I've always been aware.

I've finished binging now (day off work and plans cancelled). OC grew on me as did hbc. The end of the last episode with those two made me sob.

Loved Princess Anne - always a fave and total legend in this. The Charles/Queen relationship was interesting. She behaved badly but also consistently wanted the best for him (suggesting he input into his investiture speech, getting cross when the queen mum sorted out Camilla).

It needs a rewatch I think, less comparison to lovely Claire Foy so it stands on its own merits.

SpiderCharlotte · 18/11/2019 22:31

My mum was pregnant with me when the tragedy at Aberfan happened. I remember her talking about it on many occasions, it had a profound effect on her.

sweetkitty · 18/11/2019 22:33

I’m 44 from Scotland and know all about Aberfan, thought it was common knowledge

HearMeSnore · 18/11/2019 22:48

Just watched episode 3. That was very hard to watch. My dad is from Aberfan. He went to that school. If it had happened 2 years sooner he'd have been there.

Still shaking a little bit.

GiantKitten · 18/11/2019 22:59

Geraldine Chaplin is Wallis

From fascinating behind the scenes article

EleanorReally · 18/11/2019 23:07

Just seen part 5, The Coup, OC definitely growing on me.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 18/11/2019 23:10

Finished!

I was absolutely hooked and so have watched at every opportunity. Aberfan was a stand out episode. I remember it from when I was a child, I felt they handled it well.

I think the casting in some cases was inspired, Michael Maloney and Jason Watkins were brilliant as Heath and Wilson. Couldn't fault them.

I like Tobias Menzies as the DoE. His voice and gestures were very accurate, I thought.

Struggled with OC I'm afraid, she looked too different from the Queen for me to find her believable, and her accent wasn't right. HBC was OK, good at playing drunk Margot, but given PM was supposed to be a talented singer they really shouldn't have let HBC use her own quite dreadful singing voice.

I'm disappointed that they still haven't nailed the accent. I'm old enough to remember what it sounded like when spoken by real people and it really jars with me.

It was fascinating to see the events of my childhood being replayed. The three day week!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 18/11/2019 23:21

I think they should have left it open at the end of Aberfan - filming OC from behind, and not shown her face.

Speaking of filming cinematically from behind, there’s been a lot of that in the first few episodes!

CoolCarrie · 18/11/2019 23:26

I think OC should have wore blue contact lenses as Queenie has bright blue eyes.

Wehttam · 18/11/2019 23:30

It’s fucking epic.

VanyaHargreeves · 18/11/2019 23:32

I think the Moondust episode should win Menzies awards. Incredible pathos.

8misskitty8 · 18/11/2019 23:48

Whoever does Olivia Coleman’s make up should be fired. They have managed to make her look far older than actually is.

While I’m enjoying series 3 I think it would have helped with the switch in actor’s to have subtly aged Claire foy etc. Towards the end of series 2 and have used then for the first couple of episodes of series 3.

Loving the new Philip, he’s got the voice and mannerisms correct. Liking the Anne actress too.

GiantKitten · 19/11/2019 00:02

Philip doesn’t sound like Philip though. He sounds like Charles today.

TSSDNCOP · 19/11/2019 00:03

Just finished, and here’s the thing, after the last two finished I watched them through again immediately and several times since.

I enjoyed this series, but I have no desire to watch it again.

With notable exceptions (specifically Tobias Menzies), this is starting to take on the feel of those awful Windsor films Netflix have made in the past.

TheCanterburyWhales · 19/11/2019 06:08

Philip definitely sounds like Charles.
But then I realise I don't know what the real Philip sounds like!
Afternoon off today so will get another couple of episodes in.

WineOrGinOrBoth · 19/11/2019 07:53

i knew all about Aberfan but I’m in my 50’s. I can’t remember when I first heard about it but I think I’ve always known IYSWIM.

That must have been a hard watch for you @HearMeSnore.

RuffleCrow · 19/11/2019 08:12

No-one really knows what Philip sounds like because he's extremely prone to making very dodgy gaffes and therefore very rarely broadcast. From what i have heard he and charles do sound v similar though. As happens in families.

vivacian · 19/11/2019 08:49

When was the last time we heard Phillip?

Awareness of events like Aberfan is strange isn’t it? I met someone who had lived (bought a house) in North Ferriby for ten years and she’d never heard of Capper Pass. Perhaps there’s a wilful forgetting?
