The latest Sarah Lancashire drama starts tonight, from the writer of Kirri and National Treasure. Anyone else planning to watch?

I'm totally confused by her (Sarah Lancashire) relationship with her husband, is he mentally ill or just abusive? Threatening one minute, laughing together the next, I'm not sure if it's realistic or not.

Looobyloo · 01/11/2019 06:50

Did I miss anything? Worth watching on catch-up Grin

yearinyearout · 01/11/2019 06:53

I'm giving up on it after two episodes. Had high hopes due to the cast but I'm not enjoying it so not wasting any more time!

dogsdinnerlady · 01/11/2019 07:49

One of the mothers said 'They're going to blame our kids'. Well, yes, if those little shits hadn't broken into the site intent on vandalism and causing havoc then they would still be alive. I too thought the comparisons between Grenfell and Aberfan were deeply offensive.

Susiesoap7 · 01/11/2019 11:05

Given up, love Sarah Lancashire. But hate the abuse from husband.!!!

Piggywaspushed · 01/11/2019 11:24

Every single example Adrian Scarborough gave in his litany was a disaster , where people were where they should have been , innocently doing what they should have been.

That doesn't mean kids don't muck about and that tragic things aren't still tragic in their consequences (especially if they happen to be mucking about in some H and S disaster area!) but - yes- Aberfan this isn't.

I can cope with watching things about DV : but this is weird. national treasure had that same kind of ambiguity, but was actually good enough to get away with it!

SouthWestmom · 01/11/2019 11:55

Didn't watch it last night. Does Women's Aid have an opinion? They were quick to comment on Love Island.

BestIsWest · 01/11/2019 19:49

I as watching with subtitles on and noticed that the subtitles mentioned Hillsborough but when Adrian Scarborough was reading the list of disasters he missed it out. It was the last but one, before Grenfell in the subtitles. I wonder why?

The DV aspect is horrible.

Piggywaspushed · 01/11/2019 19:57

I think because it would now be inaccurate. People have faced charges at long last for Hillsborough.

Acciocats · 02/11/2019 08:54

What a load of rubbish! There’s not a single character to warm to or care about. And the weird pack mentality of the entire community going from ‘oh our kids are all dead’ to ‘we’re going to find out who’s to blame’ in about 5 seconds was ludicrous. I stuck with episode 2 where it’s made a bit more explicit that the ringleader woman (Angie?) was a horrible bully at school so I suppose it fits that she’s stirring up the others and trying to pin blame on anyone but the teenagers who illegally entered the building. But honestly, to try to compare this with the fight for justice for Grenfell victims is insulting

I wonder, I’m assuming it will come out that Polly’s daughter was the ringleader in entering the building, will the community turn on polly And the daughter... oh hang on who cares? It really is shite.

motorcyclenumptiness · 02/11/2019 22:50

I wonder why?
Probably because there's a retrial ongoing at the time of broadcast

IHaveBrilloHair · 02/11/2019 23:13

I watched the second episode, what a load of shite, really, who wrote this?

BestIsWest · 02/11/2019 23:24

I’d missed the news about the retrial. Guess they forgot to edit the subtitles.

augustusglupe · 02/11/2019 23:49

I can’t get over the fact that the, very perfect, Steve Baldini, is now a wife beater Shock
Although I think he’s playing the pathetic, abuser roll well.
I think Sarah Lancashire needs to do more acting, I know she chooses her roles carefully, but Sarah, if you don’t keep your hand in, you may have a tendency to become a bit crap Hmm

BigcatLittlecat · 03/11/2019 09:26

Had high hopes for this but its dreadful. Not helped by SL and her appalling Welsh accent! So many great welsh actresses that could have made the role better just by having the correct accent. I usually really rate SL but she's let herself down with this one.

Sotiredofthislife · 03/11/2019 15:10

I am watching episode 2 now. I am torn with the husband - is there something actually wrong with him? My first thought is dementia which might explain her desire to stick by him despite his awful behaviour.

beanaseireann · 03/11/2019 21:23

Glad I found this thread- to know Im not alone in thinking it's not a goid watch.

I watched the first twenty minutes of Guilt but deleted it. I'm sorry now as so many posters are saying it's great.

Myshitisreal · 04/11/2019 00:21

Now I'm reading the thread in her terrible accent. 👀 Oh guilt is on bbc iplayer 😁

TinklyLittleLaugh · 04/11/2019 00:43

I’m from where they filmed part of the show and I don’t think SL’s accent is bad at all.

With the domestic violence thing, I’m assuming she’s basically ground down by him and puts up with it and tries to keep him happy because she can’t see any way out.

But yes, it’s drama by numbers and very poor.

TonTonMacoute · 04/11/2019 10:48

We bailed out after the first episode and so I have just checked in to see if I was missing anything.

Seems not!

I can't understand how such a great team of writers and cast have got this so wrong?

ShimmeryShiny · 04/11/2019 21:32

Even though there's domestic violence she doesn't seem particularly scared of him. I wonder if there is indeed some form of mental illness.

pinksparkleunicorns · 05/11/2019 18:24

@TinklyLittleLaugh I'm not from wales but secretly thought the accents were good 🙈

Dieu · 06/11/2019 19:55

I just watched the first episode on catch up, and lasted as long as the first 5 minutes. I couldn't really give enough of a shit about any of the characters, which is a turn-off for me.

Gfplux · 06/11/2019 19:57

We watched the first episode. That was enough rubbish thank you.

WineOrGinOrBoth · 07/11/2019 16:16

It’s very odd. I’m not sure about it at all & surprised by the good reviews. As a PP said I don’t think they actually watched it.
